Was the American Revolutionary War inevitable? The American Revolutionary War was a very significant time period for the History of the United States. The colonies were ruled by the British Parliament and they began feeling as if they were being mistreated as they were forced to pay unfair taxes and their power as a whole was being very limited. Evidently they wanted to gain independence from the British. At first they attempted to take a non-violent stance and reason with the British government, but the British were reluctant to do so. As a result the American Colonist over time resulted in declaring war against them in 1775. Whether this war was inevitable or not has been debated for many years now; however the war was inevitable due to the fact that the American Colonist attempted to reason with the British Parliament to begin with but was quickly turned down. The word “Inevitable” means certain to happen or unavoidable. This means the question is asking whether the American Revolution was avoidable or not and although the question is very arguable and there is evidence to support both sides there is more evidence supporting the fact that the war was inevitable. There were many factors that led up to the American Revolutionary War, one of these factors were the laws and acts being passed at the time. The British Parliament attempted to limit the power the American Colonist had at the time by taking away from their income. How they did this one may ask? The simple answer is taxes. One of the many taxes imposed was the stamp act. During this time the American colonies were being oppressed by the British one of the first signs of this was the Stamp Act. After the French and Indian War, Great Britain was in tremendous debt and had additional land to rule. By cause of their debt and their obligation to their new land, they began to put taxes on the colonists living in that land. The colonists were enraged because they were getting taxed without representation in British Parliament. Two acts that caused some of these reactions are the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts. Overall, British actions after 1763 caused numerous reactions from the colonists, which led to the American Revolution.
Alfred Young is a historian who takes a harder look at the life of an ordinary Boston man, George Robert twelves Hewes, before and after the revolution changes in America. The book looks at the developments that led up to the American Revolution through the life Hewes, who goes from a shoemaker to a rebel. Not only was Hewes a participant in the Boston Massacre, he was also involved in the event that later would be referred to as the Tea party. His involvements in these events paint a clearer picture of what can motivate someone to take up arms and fight for their freedom.
For starters, The American Revolution was waged as a war of last resort because the colonists could not execute any more plans to make truce with Britain peacefully. (140) It was during this time period that “the government in London concerned itself with the colonies in unprecedented ways…to help raise funds to pay for the war and finance the empire.” (Forner 141) The British government was heavily in debt after fighting the Seven Years War on several fronts. The need to raise funds was paramount and the colonies were a ready source. The British government started imposing taxes on the colonies as a means of income. This was a change in the relationship between America and the mother country. Many Americans opposed these taxes. The American Revolution was caused by a series of attempts from the British to tax American colonists. After a war against France, Britain ruled an enormous overseas empire. Britain however faced war debt and was in need of money to administer the overseas empire. The crown decided that since the colonists were the primary beneficiaries of this empire, it was time to have them contribute to the empire’s revenue by paying taxes.

The first reason that the Revolutionary War could not have been avoided is that the French and Indian war significantly changed relations with the colonists. The French war was started because of ongoing tensions in North America. The French and Indian war affected the British because they were forced into war with Spain but they obtained territorial gains in North America because of it. At the end of the war the colonists felt that they had less than the British which influenced war between the colonists and the British even more.
The American Revolution was sparked by a myriad of causes. These causes in themselves could not have sparked such a massive rebellion in the nation, but as the problems of the colonies cumulated, their collective impact spilt over and the American Revolution ensued. Many say that this war could have been easily avoided and was poorly handled by both sides, British and American; but as one will see, the frame of thought of the colonists was poorly suited to accept British measures which sought to “overstep” it’s power in the Americas. Because of this mindset, colonists developed a deep resentment of British rule and policies; and as events culminated, there was no means to avoid revolution and no way to turn back.

The war consisted of 13 people arrested ;8 british,1 officer, and 4 civilians(“American Revolution”).Some say it was just a “street fight”(“American Revolution history”).
In conclusion, the American Revolution was very revolutionary. It was a huge milestone in American history. The war not only gave America their own independence from the most powerful country in the world, it gave the American government the basis of how it runs today and brought about many social and political changes. Although many historians see the war as a change of power from one greedy power to another, Americans wouldn’t have a democracy and citizens wouldn’t have the rights they have.

This war was a result of many events, some of those including the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and the Coercive Act. Britain kept harassing the colonists with these Acts, which caused the colonies to slowly grow closer together until the point in which they decided they had, had enough and wanted independence from Great Britain. Joseph P. Martin was born in November in the year 1760. Although he was young and did not understand everything that was going on around him at the time, he was still able to witness some of the events leading up to the war, such as the Stamp Act (4).
