Corruption of the American Dream The Great Gatsby is a novel based off of the American dream, which is something that everyone strives for. The author of the book F. Scott Fitzgerald has his own American dream to become a well known writer, and to have the girl of his dreams, and throughout the novel this dream reflected in The Great Gatsby within in the characters Gatsby and Daisy. Fitzgerald had developed the character Gatsby by incorporating some of his own dreams. For example Gatsby has a forbidden love for Daisy, but he cannot have her because she does not want to leave her husband, Gatsby also wants to do everything he can for Daisy but since she will not leave her husband Gatsby is doing all of this for no reason, and in the end nothing goes his way and he just ends up unhappy and alone. Another character in this novel that has an american dream is Daisy. Daisy’s dream is to be Gatsby’s lover, and she wants to live a happy life, but not with Gatsby. By doing this to Gatsby, Daisy will just end up stuck with her husband who does nothing special for her and she will not be as happy as she could be. The American Dream is an idea that many people have and want to achieve, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy Buchanan, and Jay Gatsby each have a dream, but as time goes on these dreams slowly begin to escape their grasp which eventually leads them to misery and despair. In the novel The Great Gatsby there are many references about the american dream from F. Scott Fitzgerald's life. “What we have to bear in mind is that this story is an attack on that American dream which critics have so often imagined Fitzgerald was engaged in celebrating throughout his writings” (Bewley). The novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, deals heavily with the concept of the American Dream as it existed during the Roaring Twenties, and details its many flaws through the story of Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and ambitious entrepreneur who comes to a tragic end after trying to win the love of the moneyed Daisy Buchanan, using him to dispel the fantastic myth of the self-made man and the underlying falsities of the American Dream. Despite Gatsby’s close association with the American Dream, however, Fitzgerald presents the young capitalist as a genuinely good person despite the flaws that caused his undoing. This portrayal of Gatsby as a victim of the American Dream is made most clear during his funeral, to which less than a handful of people attend. Gatsby makes many mistakes throughout the novel, all of which Fitzgerald uses these blunders as a part of his thematic deconstruction of the American Dream.

The thesis of Kimberley Hearne’s essay “Fitzgerald’s Rendering of a Dream” is at the end of the first paragraph and reads “It is through the language itself, and the recurrent romantic imagery, that Fitzgerald offers up his critique and presents the dream for what it truly is: a mirage that entices us to keep moving forward even as we are ceaselessly borne back into the past (Fitzgerald 189).” Hearne’s essay provides information on the misconception of The American Dream that Fitzgerald conveys through “The Great Gatsby”. She provides countless evidence that expresses Fitzgerald’s view of The American Dream, and explains that Fitzgerald’s writing of the novel is to express to Americans what The American Dream truly is.

Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is set in the 1920s when the Jazz Age was at its peak, and immigrants seeking fast fortune set their eyes to the United States to obtain the American Dream. Fitzgerald’s theme throughout the novel is the idea that the American Dream that many individuals set out to obtain a rags to riches story is a myth. Gatsby and George Wilson are portrayals of those who strive to gain wealth as fast as possible, and will do anything in their power to get what they want. As society framed the American dream as an optimistic form of pursuing your goals, Fitzgerald makes a stubble nod and racial hierarchies that were formed from this idea. Though they represent individuals striving for a better life, their goals and social status within the community are immensely different, and their deaths at the end of the novel symbolize the death and decline of the American dream.

Through the use of symbolism and critique, F. Scott Fitzgerald is able to elucidate the lifestyles and dreams of variously natured people of the 1920s in his novel, The Great Gatsby. He uses specific characters to signify diverse groups of people, each with their own version of the “American Dream.” Mostly all of the poor dream of transforming from “rags to riches”, while some members of the upper class use other people as their motivators. In any case, no matter how obsessed someone may be about their “American Dream”, Fitzgerald reasons that they are all implausible to attain.
“Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone...just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.” The American Dream is the ideal that all men are created equal further more that life is merely the noble pursuit for greatness, money, wealth, and power for what else truly symbolizes our great nation if not this? The answer to that question of course is corruption, greed, and deception. Fitzgerald uses the characters tone and behavior to expose both sides of the american dream. Many may wonder as to how F. Scott Fitzgerald may have demonstrated the idea of the American dream in the 1920’s through the Great Gatsby? However, taking a look at the various characters in the novel and the different ways in which they have been depicted it is quite evident that F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the idea of the American dream through the character of Great Gatsby. Despite being narrated by Nick Holloway the book seems much closely related to a memoir of Gatsby than a novel; due to the author’s exceptional use of imagery throughout. It was this use of imagery and description that really demonstrates to the reader what the American dream was all about and the character of Gatsby does is nothing more than amplify the contents of

Despite how impossible it is, every person tries to achieve his or her dream so they can be happy or successful. The American Dream is being more powerful or better than anyone was before. In his stories Fitzgerald argues that this “American Dream” cannot be reached. No matter what it is, be it topping the social ladder, or getting the girl, or just being satisfied with one’s life, it just cannot be reached. There is always something stopping one from achieving one’s dream. Whether it is disadvantages or limitations sprung from social status, or other uncontrollable barriers blocking the dream, it is not something that can ever truly be enjoyed.
