During the course of this year one in four people will experience a mental health problem. There is a lot of confusion over what mental health is and the best ways to help those who are in need. With reference to social policy provision this essay will analyse, what provisions are made for those people who suffer from mental health, and explore if there is a direct link between mental health and poverty, what is meant by mental health, what are the mental health policies and what are the relevant aspects in today’s human right frameworks?
The term mental health is used to describe to a wide range of symptoms and experiences. These are things such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, schizophrenia and manic depression. People are not born with mental health problems the problems can develop at any time and each person’s experience is individual to him or her. They can last anything from several weeks to a lifetime (mental health foundation 2013). It is estimated that mental disorders affect more than a third of the population every year, the most common of these being depression and anxiety. Mind recognises that some of the causes of mental health to range from difficult family backgrounds, genes, bio chemistry, difficult life events and social problems. Some of the effects of mental health can be self-harm, suicidal thoughts and panic attacks (Mind 2013). Mental health social policy guidelines have been put into place to reflect the aims and needs of those with mental health disorders, these include the Scottish Government Mental health strategy for Scotland 2012-2015, this sets out range of commitments across the full spectrum of mental health improvement, to ensure quality care and treatment another policy is ...

...s with dignity and respect is one of the upmost priorities. Social policies have been put in place to protect those in need, and to give them the best care possible, in an environment that best suits their need. It is clear to see that there is a direct link between poverty and mental health, poverty can be the cause and a direct effect of those with mental health disorders. With the main factor being that of lack of employment opportunities. This can lead to poverty and also decrease social interaction which can be of benefit to those in need. The World health organisation sees the positive dimension of health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. For those experiencing this health problem the importance of a regulated and coherent social policy framework plays a big part in their recovery
The relationship between mental health and poverty can prove to be complicated at times because of an overwhelmingly large number of outside
People who are in different societal groups measure health in different ways. Mental health affects people in developing countries in different ways because they look at different aspects of and compare different things. People in developing countries who have money and who are able to access the medical care are looked at to be at a higher social status. Medical care in these areas cost money, a lot of people who do not have the money are not able to access the support they would need to improve their mental health. Due to mental health being a topic that is rarely talked about it is also something that a lot of people suffer from but no one talks about because they are not able to get
Mental health and mental ill health is a wide subject that includes many different categories of mental health problems. According to the organisation Mind, mental health problems affect one in four people in Britain (Mind, 2013). Although, that is a big number it still is a sensitive topic for many people.
Mental health is defined as ‘not being present when psychological distress or maladaptive behavior is appropriate given a child’s age’ by The Health Advisory Service Report (HAS Report, 1995, Cited in Dogra, Parkin, Gale and Frake, 2008). This definition offers a fundamental basis to consider the source of a child’s mental health. In addition, The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2001, Cited in Dogra et al.) mentioned that mental health is a key component of health through which individuals are able recognise their own abilities. Mental disorders can affect mental health in numerous ways and are able to prevent or even reduce the likelihood of accomplishing any goals such as coping with the stresses of life.
Mental health disparities, “the power imbalances that impact practices influencing access, quality, and outcomes of behavioral health care, or a significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival rate in a specific group of people defined along racial and ethnic lines, as compared with the general population” (Safran, 2011). Although there are many mental health care dipartites, I’m going to focus on the impact of poverty and lack of attention given to mental health. By advocating for a prevention, promotion, and intervention related to mental health, will aid in minimizing mental health disparities. Not only is it important to advocate on a macro level, but it is important to educate
Continuing budget cuts on mental health care create negative and detrimental impacts on society due to increased improper care for mentally ill, public violence, and overcrowding in jails and emergency rooms. Origins, of mental health as people know it today, began in 1908. The movement initiated was known as “mental hygiene”, which was defined as referring to all things preserving mental health, including maintaining harmonious relation with others, and to participate in constructive changes in one’s social and physical environment (Bertolote 1). As a result of the current spending cuts approaching mental health care, proper treatment has declined drastically. The expanse of improper care to mentally ill peoples has elevated harmful threats of heightened public violence to society.
Mental health can be seen as a continuum where illnesses are defined as patterns of behaviour that cause psychological suffering, distress and disability preventing adequate functioning with the potential of risk of harm to the self or others (Martins-Mourao, 2010, p. 92).
Mental health issues affect people of every age all over the world, and there are so many complex disorders that people cope with. These issues and disorders include depression, anxiety disorders, and OCD (Fundamental facts about health, 2015). While many people suffer from mental illness, there is still a strong stigma surrounding the topic of mental health which makes it incredibly difficult for people, especially children and young adults, to talk about what they experience and to receive help. Many young people choose to suffer in silence than to be open about their challenges, however the statistics below confirm the issue of mental wellness is more common than people think.
Most commonly, people are stated to be “depressed” rather than someone who “has depression”. It is a common perception that mental illnesses are not a priority when it comes to Government spending, just as it is forgotten that most mental health disorders can be treated and lead a normal life if treatment is successful. The effect of this makes a sufferer feel embarrassed and dehumanized. A common perception is that they should be feared or looked down upon for something they have not caused. People experience stigma as a barrier that can affect nearly every aspect of life—limiting opportunities for employment, housing and education, causing the loss of family and friends.... ...
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
Mental health is just as important as physical health in a person’s life. Mental health is critical to a person’s well-being, their ability to live a productive life and to keep a healthy family and interpersonal relationships. Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.
It is deeply alarming that ignoring mental health is systematically ignored as an important part of health promotion. This is shocking because, in theory, mental health is recognized as an important component of health, the close link between physical and mental health is recognized, and it is generally known that physical and mental health share many of the same social, environmental and economic components. We know that facilities dedicated to those with mental health problems are more vulnerable to the resources of physical diseases in many parts of the world, and it is essential that mental health promotion should not be equally affected
Indeed, it has previously been demonstrated that an accumulation of factors increase the likelihood of mental health issues developing (Sameroff, 2006). Therefore, a comprehensive approach is required to tackle mental illness involving an array of services. This paper identifies these services as the education system, social services and mental health services. These services have been chosen because of Claveirole (2010), illuminating three causal groups of mental health. For instance, education represents an aspect of social environments; social services examine the individual’s family and in some cases, the individual’s behaviour. Whilst finally, mental health services themselves examine the individuals psyche. Therefore, these three service types study the factors that have been identified to cause mental
Mental health refers to the state of individuals psychologically, emotionally and socially. Mental health affects a person’s emotions, feelings, thoughts, and sections when exposed to different situations. Furthermore, mental health is responsible for a person’s reaction to stress and other social conditions. Generally, mental health affects how a person relates to others and their ability to understand and interact with them. Therefore, problems that affect a person’s mental health affect the abilities to socialize, their feelings, moods, reaction to situations. The person experiencing mental health problem may portray different behaviors when confronted with different issues. Mental health issues have several
As of the moment, mental disorders constitute four of the 10 leading causes of disability in the world, and mental and behavioral disorders account for 12% of the global burden of disease, yet the mental health budgets of the majority of countries constitute less than 1% of their total health expenditures. (WHO, 2001)
