The Core Values of Person Centered Counseling
The person-centered approach was designed in 1902, based on the work of Carl Roger. He create this method so that he could promote openness, growth and change in counseling and our understanding processes. It is an approach which is practical and useful in the educational field because it is helpful with problem solving outside the curriculum faced by students. It offer many different ways of understanding level of solving issues of relationships, emotional development and ethical behavior. These issue at times seem to be at the cause of most of the problems in school and in society today. This paper will discuss the core values of person-centered approach in counseling touching on the process of empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard as important concepts of this method in counseling and some suggestions on classroom management.
Rogerian core condition is known as the unconditional positive regard. Rogers believed that in order for people to grow and fulfill their potential in every area of their life that it is important that they are valued as themselves. Unconditional positive regard (UPR) core value simple means that the therapist listens to the client in a non-judgmental way. This normally refers to the deep and genuine caring for the client that therapist’s may displayed. The therapist may approve the client but his or her action is not. The client is able to express the things that they are thinking and feeling without a sense of fear, judgment, or rejection.

Over the last 100 years, the underpinning concepts in the fields of psychology and counseling were wrought. Within this period, these concepts have transformed and evolved from somewhat crude conceptions of the psyche toward more holistic interventions and approaches. As the profession continues to move forward, adaptations of the original theorists regarding the nature of man and the development of personality continue to emerge. These adaptations, along with the integration of new concepts and ideas, continue to contribute to the field. The author describes his view of man and human nature, personality development, and explores potential implications for counseling.
When thinking about being person-centred and the core skills involved which additionally apply to relationship-centred care, it is unconditional positive regard holding the person in respect, empathy and congruence or authenticity. As (Fox , 2007) proposes the skills are used, whilst listening without judgement to the story and holding the person safely in their experience of their emotion. It is additionally suggested by (Corey, 2009, pp. 164-196) that person-centred theories in counselling are supported by very existential theories that deal with the here and now of people’s experience. Understanding the counseling session from the client’s perspective is a very important aspect in the development of a therapeutic relationship. A clinician must be an excellent listener, while being to pay attention to the client’s body language, affect and tone. The dynamics in the counseling session that is beneficial to the client include the recognition of the pain that the client is feeling. The detrimental part of this includes a misunderstanding of the real issues, a lack of consideration of the cultural aspects of the client, and a lack of clinical experience or listening skills. In this presentation, we will discuss the positive and negative aspects of the counseling session from the client’s perspective which includes the client’s attitudes, feelings, and emotions of the counseling session. We will next examine the propensity of the client to reveal or not reveal information to the counselor, and how transference, and counter-transference can have an effect on the counselor-client relationship.
Current research implies that an empathetic clinician-client relationship and interrelated ecosystems play the majority role in the success of therapy (Kilpatrick & Holland, 2009). The clinician’s ability to be present and actively perceive what the client is experiencing is of utmost importance in creating a therapeutic alliance. To explain, the client should not be inferior to the counselor; the environment should be two people discussing an issue and ways to make a difference. A therapist should occasionally share similar experiences; therefore, sessions should make clients feel comfortable. To add, the client should feel safe due to the positive atmosphere the therapist brings to the session. Carl R. As a counselor empathy is essential as it allows me to enter my clients internal frame of reference, while still retaining a problem-solving stance. The relationship between the counsellor and client is fundamental to the success of the counselling experience and the results that will follow. The counsellor and client need to build rapport and trust. The client needs to feel comfortable enough to open up and discuss their inner most thoughts and fears in the knowledge that the discussion is confidential and non-judgemental. The resulting relationship should be one of mutual respect.
Theoretical Perspective: This semester in procedures of counseling class we discussed a lot of different types of counseling theories. We also did a lot of practicing with each theory with our partners. I found that person-centered therapy best fits my personal attitudes and style of counseling. I think this would be a good style of counseling for me because I can see myself better helping people as a whole than trying to fix an actual problem.
The article’s title, The Necessary and Sufficient Conditions of Therapeutic Personality Change, is almost a summary in itself. In the article Rogers tries to answer the question he proposes, “Is it possible to state, in terms which are clearly definable and measurable, the psychological conditions which are both necessary and sufficient to bring about constructive personality change?” (Rogers, 2007). Rogers proceeds to describe the relationship and interaction between the client and the therapist that must be in place in order for positive personality change to take place. He condensed the psychological conditions needed down to six conditions and proceeds to explain each of them in more detail. Along with the detailed description Roger also includes clinical examples for emphasis. The conditions the Rogers describe align with the humanistic approach in that Rogers determines that empathy and positive regard by the therapist towards the clients is necessary for the psychotherapy to be effective. The therapy as described by Rogers is relevant today, nine years after the article was written. Clients more than ever today want to know that their therapist understand and has compassion for them and their condition. To begin to understand we must explore the differences between group counseling and individual counseling. By better understanding its structure a clearer picture is shown on the necessities of ethics within its environment.
Person-Centered Therapy is an optimistic theory that is categorized in the humanistic approaches to therapy. PC therapy believes that human beings are intrinsically good, and are motivated to be the best that they can be (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p. 346). The theory embodies respect for individuals and values of tolerance and understanding (Brodley, 2007, p. 140). As the name implies the client is responsible for his or her own growth and improvement (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p.344). Rogers' stated that the main assumption of his approach is that “individuals have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering their self-concepts, basic attitudes, and self- directed behavior” (Rogers, 1980, p.115). One of the underlying assumptions, and main motivation, of Person-Centered Therapy is that human beings possess an innate tendency to grow and meet their full potential, or to self-actualize. Self-actualization is the inherent motivation to reach our highest potential, both emotionally and intellectually (Kosslyn & Rosenberg, 2004, p. 464). Self-actualization moves one towards autonomous behavior and self-sufficiency, it enriches one’s life and enhances their creativity. It also promotes congruence, wholeness, and integration of the person. Rogers describes self-actualizing people as the fully functioning person (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p.322).
