The connection between media, advertising, and self image has always been around. Be it the idea of being as skinny as the model on TV, or just drinking name brand Coke to be “cool”. Being like the model usually causes more problems than a simple Coke, but it all happens. The model on TV usually affects people in the way that the men or women may want to be tanned, skinny, strong, or all around good looking. The effects of Coke may only have a person have a different label on their drink to afford it. Media affects all kinds of people in negative ways that may be minor or severe; the affects are both painful and not always necessary. Some consumers will go and by from the company that made them think about their disadvantage or abnormality compared to their models or subjects just to either fit in or hope that the product will fix their problem. A particularly large person may see a commercial for a new energy drink that was advertised with skinny models and believe that the odd flavored sugar may actually help them get thinner.
