Today we live in an increasingly electronic, virtual world. Educators and their students depend upon this world to conduct research, simulate reality, and demonstrate their achievement. Our students never knew their environment not to have the Internet and video games. Thus, they expect their educational experience to included these as well. Student expectations can be seized upon to engage them in formal education. Driver Education has long recognized and seized upon this opportunity. The very nature of the driving task necessitates structured learning and assessment experiences beyond the traditional classroom, such as simulations. These experiences must provide opportunity for practice and assessment without risk, a virtual driving experience, and need not be as sophisticated as the driving task itself.
It is relatively easy to find support for the use of technology-based assessments in our schools. Spencer J. Salend states “Computer simulations, problem-solving software programs, and virtual learning experiences can be used to examine student responses to a range of learning situations and provide teachers with opportunities to assess academic, critical thinking, social, and metacognitive skills” (Salend, 2009). Simulation, as used in the Driver Education program at Chambersburg Senior High School, provides the instructors there with the opportunity to assess student understanding and achievement of vital goals prior to behind the wheel in instruction. Today’s society appears to be constantly on the go. People seem to be pulled in multiple directions at once. Individuals never appear to have enough time to complete tasks that continually accumulate. It can be difficult to criticize someone that tries to make the most out every minute. Unfortunately, some of today’s drivers show a lack of judgment and trying to perform other tasks, while behind the wheel. People may feel this is best use time while getting to a destination. Occasionally, the small amount of time that people are trying to gain results in a time consuming accident. With modern conveniences that are geared toward an on the go public, individuals appear to be too preoccupied to driving safely.
The course gives teens a better understanding of safer driving habits to maintain. For example, a while ago a young man was killed in an accident due to a bad habit: the driver was drinking and driving. As stated in a journal, “Alcohol involvement among drivers fifteen to twenty years old involved in fatal crashes, in 2003, numbers of surviving was 4227, and fatally injured was 3657”(Best, 663). Therefore, the numbers keep going each year and it is a reoccurring problem that can be stopped immediately. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2001), “Although 25% reduction in alcohol related fatalities from 1990 to 2000 has been observed; approximately 41% of all traffic fatalities (17,448) in 2001 were alcohol-related” (Sarkar, Andreas, and de Fabrio, 306). The 21st Century Educator is inundated with a plethora of assessments which dominate the education landscape from one side to the other. Whether one is assessing formatively or summatively, educators are evaluating on a weekly basis. In fact, in Citrus County, students take a reading comprehension test called Fast Bridge three times a year, which helps them see their potential college readiness skills and what improvements they need to work on. Drivers in their 20s make up 27 percent of the distracted drivers in fatal crashes (NHTSA). In a class of 30 High School sophomores students between the ages of 15 and 16, will be in their twenties within 4-5 years. Within this short amount of time, that means that 8 of them will be responsible for a fatal car crash. If they survive the crash, they will face charges of irresponsible driving, if not something worse such as vehicular manslaughter which can result in up to 20 years in prison. This will affect them for the rest of their lives. But the answer lies not in stricter driving laws. The solution lies in educating motorists about the dangers and punishments of distracted driving. For example, a study was conducted using a driving simulator.
One of the most important reasons why there are a large number of crashes involving teens is due to their inexperience in driving. According to an article titled “Why are Young Drivers at a Greater Risk”, driver education classes provide only a miniscule amount of the information needed to become a good responsible driver. A study found that there was a decrease in crash rates among teens that got an average of a hundred and ten hours of supervised driving. This proves that teens not only need driver education classes but more on the road driving experience (Why). The article labeled “Teen Driving” discussed that the less experience any person has in driving the more likely they are to make an error in judgment. In 1998, eighty percent of fatal accidents involving sixteen year olds were a direct result of driver error. It is the year 2015. Technology immerses us into a pit of pleasure, ease and luxury. We are enlightened by fancy Smartphones, fast computers, and simple online shopping. At this point, the human race is striving to create or destroy anything that is willing to harm us. We are at war against ourselves and we are not taking enough action against the fatal occurrences that happen everyday. We collect data to show the safeties and dangers of activities that we participate in every day, but we continue to emerge ourselves deeper and deeper into the statistic that automobile accidents are. New technologies that are interactive are increasingly becoming sources of distractions, and people are becoming more focused to devices resulting to reduced focus on the roads when behind the wheel. This distracted driving is becoming an alarming issue on the roads.
There are many people that drive in this world. In this day and age it's kind of a necessity to be able to drive. People generally need to drive to work on a very regular basis, usually five days a week. This means that there is a lot of different things happening, both good and bad, that create many statistics. I will be discussing some of those statistics today. There are definitely many different statistics I could discuss with you. Just a few of them are distracted driving statistics, teen driving statistics, texting and driving statistics, and even drunk driving statistics. There are even more I could list off, but that would be a very long list.
Assessments are an important part of teaching. Assessments are a good way for teachers to monitor students’ learning and understanding. Knowing students’ level of understanding can help teachers improve students’ learning and guide their instructions. In the future, I plan to continue assessing students in multiple ways such as, asking questions, illustrations and writing to adjust my instruction. The number of accidents over the last ten years have drastically increased, drivers are paying less attention to the road itself. Many individuals behind the wheel of a car believe that their driving does not affect the road conditions, however it always will. The driving habits of today are catastrophic due to the reasoning that the driving will affect other lives through reckless or distracted driving, and disobeying traffic laws.
In the 21st century, our nation is facing a major issue, causing teenagers to lose their lives at the hand of the wheel due to inexperienced driving. “Teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to be involved in an automobile crash,” and statistics show. Automobile accidents are the number one cause of teen deaths. Driving regulations are in high need to be changed in order for teenagers to gain more experience with driving before taking the driving test, which could help save countless adolescence’s lives.
