Happiness and freedom may seem like two diverse things; however, both are linked in the way that happiness can be attained by the service of freedom. The feeling of happiness can be defined as the state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. To achieve happiness, there is no one correct path to it. It differs from person to person. This means that a sort of power must be initiated in order to find the happiness one wants to attain. Freedom is necessary in the sense that each person must search for their own definition of happiness and layout the plan they need to achieve it. This allows us to define out what are own happiness is. Freedom is a service in achieving happiness as it allows the person to define their own desired path.
A great conflict arises on the topics of freedom and happiness between Christ and the Grand Inquisitor, who is ally with Satan. The Grand Inquisitor explains to Christ how rejecting the three temptations has guaranteed human beings the choice of free will. The three temptations offered to Christ was the bread, the miracle and the power. In the first temptation, Christ did not accept the request to turn stone into bread. Christ believed that people should live by the word of God and instead of a material security like bread. In the second temptation, Christ refused to perform the miracle of being saved if he were to jump off the mountain. Christ did not want to use this temptation to gain religious faith of having to prove to others his powers. The third temptation was the offer of power of all nations. Freedom brings happiness to a person in the way that it opens up all the possible opportunities for a person to achieve the goal. If one is constrained from certain actions, they will be constrained from doing the things they want to do. It will make it impossible to achieve the desired goal one wants to achieve. In The Grand Inquisitor, Christ believed that human beings should have the choice of free will because it will allow them to choose the path they most desire. It is not right to confine someone to one path that will lead them to someone else’s ideal path of happiness. Without freedom, they will be limited to what they can or cannot do. They will have to follow that one path and not be able to search for their own. Thus, freedom is a service to achieving happiness as it allows the person to define their own path.

The pursuit of happiness as Jefferson’s phrased and recognized centuries later, is a natural right and a fundamental objective of man, and not based on the possession of material things but in growth as people can achieve, obtaining our goals and aspirations and the positive impact we can have on the lives of others.
Then the matter of liberty comes up; we believe that we are free but the reality of it is that we are in the shackles of the government. They control our every aspect of life: what we do, when we do, where we do and how we do it. The only liberty we have is what we think and how we choose to act on those thoughts. We have the freedom to choose what will make us happy as far as life goes and that will lead into the topic of the pursuit of happiness. The Market Revolution caused tremendous changes in the way Americans live and interact with one another and the environment. Although the Market Revolution had copious extraordinary effects on Americans' life and culture that continues to influence, it also had numerous deleterious effects on the society. In Walden and Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau, he condescended the changes in the market because it changed the way people lived. Thoreau believed that the Market Revolution suppressed people’s enjoyment of freedom and instead of savoring the simple things in life, people chase after materialistic goods and thus incapable of enjoying life.

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” a well-known phrase from the Declaration of Independence puts forth the idea that the United States of America was built, partially, on the idea of “happiness” for all Americans. This idea of happiness, however, has no set definition, to some happiness comes from power, wealth, emotion, helping, to others it comes in the form of achievement of a major or minor goal they have set in their lives. Designed by those who strive for it, happiness takes on the life and purpose that a particular person strives for, provided that it follows lawful means of attainment. Personally, I believe that true happiness stems from contentment, fellowship with others and belief.
Freedom, a seven lettered word that varies in meaning for every individual. Freedom is the basis of human rights, without the freedom to do as one please, one feels confine. This confinement leads to many interesting tales of human curiosity expanding and exploring, such as Leonardo DiCaprio fascination with corpses or the escaping of where freedom is not a necessity such as North Korea. There are many aspects to freedom, it is reflected in actions, decisions and thought. In existentialism, one’s philosophical approach is that one is free and is the deciding factor of everything that they choose in their life. In existentialism since one has ultimate freedom in everything, without any authority deciding for them, this vast array of thought that can come for anyone from anywhere creates hell for others, because one is unable to control others.

Politicians present the utopian view that a perfect society would be one where we all live in freedom, and spiritual leaders teach that life is a spiritual journey leading the soul to unite with God, thus achieving ultimate freedom and happiness.
