Sentence #3: [TOPIC SENTENCE 1]
In the beginning of the book, Curzon offers to take Isabel up to the Tea Water Pump. This is the first minor risk taken by Curzon in the book.At first, we would think of him as any other slave, just like Isabel, but later we find out he is treated a bit differently than Isabel and Ruth. Later on, we learn that Curzon has a lot of freedoms in his family, but we didn’t know when he interrupted Master Bellingham and Madam Lockton, saying, “I’ll take her, sir.’ Lockton turned around. The boy had removed his red hat and bowed politely” (pg.34).

Now the tailored waistcoat was gone and his shirt was dirty with sweat and mud. It hung over a pair of working man’s breeches that were cut off below his knee. He did not have on stockings or shoes. ... risk taker, as he takes a lot of risks throughout the book. In the beginning of the book, Curzon offers to take Isabel, the new girl, up to the Tea Water Pump to get water for her new owners. Also, in the middle of the book, we read that Curzon has become a soldier, which risks everything Curzon had in his possession at that time. The last example of Curzon taking a huge risk and paying for his freedom was when he didn’t fight back for his safety and comfort. His cellmates treated him differently because he was a black slave, and so, they didn’t give him his blanket, food, or any other comforting things he might have needed to survive the cold winter and the raging fever. Curzon might not have changed a lot throughout his adventures, but he has gotten more experience and memories and he has definitely paid a huge price for his personal comfort and future freedom.
