During this essay I’m going to attempt to discuss and analyse the key issues and concepts associated with two of Picasso’s most famous works, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Guernica.

I’m going to discuss and explore the cultural, theoretical and conceptual connections between the two works.

I chose to look at works by Picasso, as I feel his work influenced a lot of 20th century and modern day artists, and it has helped shape the art world into what it is today, in every aspect and style of art, from sculpture to typography.

Picasso, who was born in 1881, was very influenced by the culture he surrounded himself with, both Spanish and French. One of the best known figures in 20th century art, his work is known all around the world and is some of the most popular art work today.

Forefather of the Cubism movement, Picasso incorporated many styles into his work, and showed exceptional artistic talent from a young age.

Picasso was very neutral during the wars that reigned while he lived, instead choosing to paint his distaste for what was happening.

Picasso died in 1973 while his wife Jacqueline and he entertained guests at their chateau, but his daughter continues his legacy as a fashion design.

The pieces I’ve chosen to look at are from different eras inside his cubism period. I’m going to explore the changes in his artwork as well as the connections, looking at the influences on a young Picasso, and how they shaped his artwork into what it became.

The first of the two works I’ve chosen to look at is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon), which was painted in 1907.

The painting is oil on canvas, and is sized at 243 x 233cm.

It was originally titled “The Brothel of Avignon.”
