The musical genres for metal and grunge are often mistaken for the same genre. Many people make this mistake because the two are often loud, and the person listening to it does not give the music a chance to show its differences. Nevertheless, the two genres of music have some similarities, but also several important differences. One similarity that the two genres share is their guitar tones. Both of these genres use extreme amounts of distortion in their guitar playing. Both also have the high settings on their amps set to a higher level than their mids, to give the guitar tone a crisp crunchy sound. Grunge and metal are also known for their driving bass tone, which comes from the over driven bass guitar. Though these two genres are very similar in tone, they are dramatically differe...
One of the similarities is about lyrics. Blues tried to express the common feeling of African-Americans such as love and deep sorrow. Rock ‘n’ roll also tried to express the common things or feelings of the younger generations. The common shared subjects of lyrics of rock ‘n’ roll were about car, stress form society, love, and rebellion. The important thing is that blues was also representative of rebellion of African-Americans, though blues was more unrevealed which means an indirect reference. However, rock ‘n’ roll was more obvious and open. For example, Rock around the Clock, the original sound track of Blackboard jungle, was number one for eight weeks, and the movie was about the rebellion of teenagers and violence. The other similarity is a musical structure. Rock 'n' roll uses simple three chords and has AAB pattern in most of songs. However, even though blues and rock ‘n’ roll is the relationship of father and son, there are some differences between blues and rock ‘n’ roll to justify each genre. If blues is created from African-Americans, rock ‘n’ roll is a result of mixture of blacks music and whites music. Rock 'n' roll has the chorus following the lyrics which is the aspect of whites music. Rock ‘n’ roll sound is upon bluesy sound which is from blacks music style and it has stronger drum beats than drum sound of blues. Rock ‘n’ roll also used guitar and piano, but it has more
What do Clint Black, Bob Dylan, Toad the, Wet Sprocket, and Tina Turner have in common? Their music has its roots in not only the old murder ballads and the raw dance of poor southern whites, but also the blues, the hollers, and the sung of poor blacks. Black rhythm and blues and white country-western merged in such figure as Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry in 1950s. Rock and roll was created by blacks and whites together as a new music filled with power and mystery.
Drug references, homosexuality, anonymous homosexual encounters, trans gender characters, cultural/sexual identity, a father’s sexual abuse towards his cross dressing son, place, and swearing are the elements in Loaded, besides the swearing and drug references none of these elements are in grunge music. What exactly makes it grunge? Grunge music is about freedom, being free to do what you want, social discomforts, and social observations/commentary. Loaded on the other hand are 151 pages of subtle complaining since it is difficult to recall him liking anything. The lead character Ari is torn between his cultural and sexual identity, hates conformity, the consumption of drugs to get out of his hated reality, use of music when he has no drugs, coming up with narrow-minded conclusions based on generalizations, and lack of future direction which all doesn’t sound very grunge.
But these two genres are alike and different in many ways. A few similarities are the bass and the artists. Hip-hop and country both can have lots of bass. I like how bass makes the song sound more alive. Also, they share artists. Artists such as Taylor Swift and Florida Georgia Line sing both genres. But they also have differences. They both vary in the meanings of the songs. While hip-hop focuses on the more crazy lifestyle, country is more about normal things that occur in life. There is also a huge difference on tempo. Hip-hop is fast while country usually leans to the more slow side.
Rock is derived from the genre Rock and Roll, and in the 1960’s passed through what many called the “golden age”. During this decade was when rock was reassured as a musical genre, and became due to the advances in the radio technologies on the last decade. During this period, several of the best rock bands and artists appeared like The Beatles or Jimmy Hendrix.
The lyrics of metal music are often misunderstood to be a call to action, advocating violence to listeners. In reality the lyrics are meant to comfort the listeners and help them deal with the negative emotions they feel from this situation. Especially amongst teens who most frequently feel the negative effects of being different. The most musically "heavy" kind of metal there is is called death metal. Originally, the name was coined because of the lyrics of this subgenre of metal. The lyrics dealt with death caused by, murder, war, and any other kind of unnatural death imaginable. Now, the name is used to refer to a kind of metal with especially driving rhythms, energetic instrumentation and vocals (usually of the screaming and grunting sort), and incredibly low end and heavy sounds. Death metal is basically as far as you can go into the genre of metal. Even in this subgenre, the lyrics often spread positive messages.
Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam, Alternative Grunge bands from the 90s, were very influential to today’s bands. Grunge music started in the early 90s, mainly from the Seattle scene. Metallica, Kiss, and even Led Zeppelin helped make alternative music start. Although these bands were very famous in the 90s, many of them suffered from substance abuse and even depression. After years of being famous some bands split completely, some formed new bands with members in other bands, and even some stayed together and play together today. All bands believed that people should be able to afford music and listen to what they enjoy, not what other people want you to listen to. Bands from the 90s have influenced some of
...le genres of music have been accused of selling out during the 80's Heavy Metal and Glam Rock were fused by bands such as Motley Crue and Poison to make Glam Metal which hardcore metal fans hated as it was not deemed authentic due to its over the top and feminine feel.
I believe that the history of rock and roll demonstrates a link between culture and social class race, and age; by the way a genre brings all the people in these different categories into one big group. When rock and roll began to emerge people from different cultures and social classes started to come together as a group by the way they dressed. It was not only the music but also the fashion it brought along with it. People from this era changed the way they dressed, styled their hair and their means of transportation. This brought together people from different cultures and social class, race and age all together.
Before we explore The Birth of rock ‘n’ Roll, we must first reflect on other sounds that influence this genre of music. Sounds from blues, country, jazz, and gospel music all played a huge role in the birth of rock ‘n’ roll. The creation of different genres of music mixed together created a loud, fast, liberating sound that primarily a...
As the nineteen seventies came to a close so did many of the musical styles of that decade. While some faced what seemed to be extinction others went through a sort of evolutionary process. The bands that were at the top of the heavy metal ladder during this time were such acts as Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and Tygers of Pan Tang. These groups would be just some of what the new crop of heavy metal bands would consider inspirational. This style, which is typically referred to as "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal," would fuel and empower many acts to stardom. (Marshall 3)
Grunge owes it's start in part to the area in which it was created, Seattle was isolated, untouched by major record labels and looked over by the major touring acts at the time. It's atmosphere and attitude built up the Grunge sound and allowed it to develop before it was discovered. Then in the early 90's a small trio who called themselves Nirvana burst into the
People all over the world listen to various types of music. The most popular kinds of music in America are hip hop and rock. As they seem to be totally different types of music they have a lot of similarities . Hip Hop and Rock music have more differences than similarities.
Rock music is a term that should be familiar. Originally dubbed “rock and roll” in the 1940’s and 1950’s, rock and roll is almost always fronted by an electrical guitar and heavily influenced by blues, R&B, and even country music. By the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rock and roll began to be shortened to just “rock music”, and the entire style starting branching out into other sub-genres such as punk rock, heavy metal, garage rock, hard rock, among others. The sub-genre in question however is Alternative Rock, which is generally defined as despite following the fundamentals of rock music, it strays away from what is considered “mainstream” at the time by using concepts such as extensive underground music association, muddied or distorted guitars, more prominent use of power chords, and even a sort of rebellious or defiant attitude in lyrics and sound.
One of the most profound differences is the way both types of music came about. Rock and roll started back in the early 60’s. It was a time when the Vietnam war had just begun. Steppenwolf, The Beetles, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors all were sending out soulful messages through their music. They were singing about war, drugs, and love instead of war. There lyrics were from the heart. It provoked feelings of rage for the government, and love for one another. The rock and roll movement began out of pent up energy that had to be released in an positive manner. It had very pure, honest intentions. On the other hand pop, short for popular, music was contrived from the beginning. It too had it’s beginnings in the 60’s starting with the Monkeys. Four guys were brought together by some corporate bigwigs to create an American version of the Beetles. Little did the public know that they were not even singing their own songs. They were lip-singing the whole time. But, they managed to top the charts and make young girls faint. That could be considered the first pop music.
