Comparing and Contrasting Two Views on Leadership Traits

Effective leadership is a learned experience, one is not “born” a leader as research suggests. The following paper compares and contrasts “two views” on leadership traits and skills one bad leader and one good leader. Working with both leaders for the past twenty six years, I have learned a great deal on how misleading and leading differ and the challenges both leaders faced in addressing their leadership effectiveness in a range of issues within our organization.
Background

Our past CEO has been with our organization for twenty four years. She has an associate’s degree in business and finance and had previously worked as a billing administrator for a radiology group. Our present CEO is the sole-physician owner of a private family practice. He has extensive leadership training through the hospital system in which he has served since the early 1980’s.
Formal Training
The past CEO has had no training in the area of leadership. Her promotion to CEO was based on her influence and tactfulness in dealing with outside vendors, managers, subordinates and our current CEO. As a result, she was able to be a political navigator in that she satisfied the needs of other people while positioning herself in a positive light within the organization (Gilley, 2006).

Our current CEO is a well-respected physician in our local community. He has also held various leadership positions in the local hospital system as previously mentioned. His positions have included president of the medical executive board for a five hospital system, chief of staff for twenty three years, as well as serving on a multitude of quality committees including quality assurance, peer review, and credentialing.
