The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
I performed my community service with Habitat for Humanity. The non‐profit organization chooses the applicant that purchases the house and Habitat only charges them the cost of the materials. Almost every worker is a volunteer so Habitat for Humanity does not have to pay a high amount of wages. I felt good about myself being one of those volunteers. The future owner of the house had to work on it too. They are...
Community Service is a great opportunity to make a difference in the area you live in. There are so many ways to volunteer. Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . In other words, preventing conflicts and improving the lives of many different individuals using knowledge.
"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." is a quote that comes from William James, a great philosopher. This quote is saying that your actions do make a difference, no matter how small, and no matter if you think they make a difference or not. Every little thing you do has an impact somewhere, on someone, and on something. Actions do speak louder than words, and you never know how far down the line those actions will be felt. Community service is a great thing to put time and energy into. There are a lot of positive impacts that are made by individuals who contribute to community service projects. There are many different associations and activities that one can volunteer for to help out the community. I have done many different
The actual community service was fine. I got help out and that was nice. It also got me to go to my church, which is an irregular thing for me to do. I tend to be the only one from my group, in church, to show up to acolyte, which is a little frustrating a times, but I get used to it being just me. Plus, Arthur, the pastor who handles for of the youth related activities seems a appreciate me coming, so that is another bonus.
What I once thought was an impossible job, organizing so many books, people helped me understand the work process which made me gain self-confidence that I was able to produce in my work. Part of that confidence was also a sense of pride because I was responsible for placing books onto the shelves that many people come to read. Now that I have done my volunteer work, when I apply for scholarships and colleges, I can mention my volunteer experience and the hours I did. Although many students would rather spend four hours of their lives doing something else, those who do community service work will learn to use important characteristics such as, confidence, sense of responsibility, and scholarships, that will help them be successful not only in school, but also in future careers and
I have taken in a considerable number of things from being in the Practicum of Human Services. It has changed my whole point of view toward and my mentality toward my life. Prior to my senior year at Irving High School, I was timid, had low confidence, and maintained a strategic distance from apparently unthinkable difficulties. This class has modified the greater part of my most noticeably awful qualities. On the primary day helping the L.I.F.E. aptitudes kids, I was anxious in light of the fact that I was ungainly and socially clumsy. These qualities have not left, but rather I don't give them a chance to cripple me. The truth is, I was not by any means open to this new test at first. I would not like to be the one to blame if something turned
The Honors project was an introduction of researching and investigating topics that purely intrigue me. For three consecutive semesters, I explored topics that ranged from national to international to extraterrestrial. This flexibility is unique to the Honors Project and exactly what pulled me back each semester for further participation. Also through the Honors Project, I got the opportunity to interact with my professors outside of the classroom and develop a deeper connection than I normally would have. Furthermore, working alongside my peers exploring a vast array of topics greatly enhanced my experience at CSM as I realized the unlimited opportunities that exist in areas outside of my
Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club of Shippensburg provided me with insight into the importance of afterschool programs in the development of children's lives. Completing different tasks before the kids arrived, conversing and playing games with kids, and helping staff clean up afterward were some of the main services I Provided. Working with younger teens from all different races helped me understand the diversity of people throughout society and that several forms of diversity can impact people and their families. Understanding the social work perspectives and how they apply to different situations will impact my professional growth in the field of social work.
Community Service is a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions. There are two groups who perform community service, and those are criminals and the rest of us. This means that, for the majority of us, performing community service is completely voluntary. It is for this reasons li that I believe that community service should not be mandatory in high school for graduation. The supporters of this act think of it as an ideal society’s noble concept, but it is rather a noble concept trying to force an ideal society. When you look at it from this perspective you realize it is ironic.
My senior project entailed determining the highest efficiency wind energy generation. Using the information collected during the research process, I created a small scale, as well as a large scale wind turbine to test the different flows of wind. The small scale wind turbine measures 9 inches high and is 1/600 of a commercial wind turbine. The larger turbine is eight feet high and has a span of three feet. The inspiration behind my project is environmental engineering and sustainability. I have had many opportunities throughout high school such as a summer internship and robotics club, that have influenced my senior project product’s design and aesthetic. The final result of product is exceptionally better than I expected because of the time, research, and effort I put into creating something with the capability of
In order to fulfill the 12 hours of community service requirement for Nutrition course 139 I applied with five organizations on the approved list. The organization that replied me the fastest was Open Heart Kitchen, they mostly operate in Pleasanton and Livermore areas. Their application and signing up for shift process gives a feeling that this organization is massive, and many individuals really care about the less fortunate. From observation and conversations with the site supervisor, I believe this organization relies on individual donations, small business donations and large corporate donations such as Safeway and Walmart. This organization also relies on volunteers to work every day, they get workers from students fulfilling their hours and resume, individuals fulfilling court orders, and those that just want to help the less fortunate.
“To whom much is given, much is expected.” This quote exemplifies my own personal philosophy on community service. Service is the greatest gift one can return to their community. When an individual takes their personal time and effort to help others in need, it helps progress not only the community they live in, but multiple communities ; ultimately promoting unity and teamwork. People gather together to work towards a common goal: building the people and organizations they are directly and indirectly affected by so that the next generation will be stronger than the previous one. Community service is but is not limited to monetary and material donations, housing reinforcement, neighborhood clean ups. It is as simple as holding a toy drive for
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. This is good because it’s bringing students together and really opening them up to new
...rks. In a word, the MA experience was considered to be a bridge that combines the student learning with working skills, it would be of great help for my future career.
