The movie being analyzed is the Sandlot. The relationship between the two main characters is a friendship, which begins with one boy who is desperate for friends and another who is searching for The Sandlot’s last teammate. The friendship between Benny and Small’s is an accurate depiction of the development of friendship in real life. In the movie, Scotty Smalls (Smalls) moves to a new neighborhood. One of his new neighbors happens to be the best baseball player in the neighborhood, Benny, who eventually teaches Smalls how to catch and throw so that the team has a ninth player. What begins as filling a baseball position eventually leads to a strong bond between the two main characters. Throughout the summer, the team plays baseball, goes swimming, plays baseball, goes to the fair, and plays baseball. A dog known as “The Beast” lives behind the fence of The Sandlot. The Beast is said to have eaten every baseball and person that has ever been on the other side of that fence, so when the boys hit Small’s stepfather’s signed baseball over the fence, they have to come together to retrieve the baseball. In the movie The Sandlot, directed by David M. Evans, the development of the friendship between Scott Smalls and Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez is conveyed through their communication. The Sandlot shows the progression of a friendship and the importance of communication to help a friendship flourish. Smalls is a kid who likes science and knows little to nothing about baseball. When Small’s new stepfather fails to teach Smalls how to play catch, Smalls seeks acceptance from the Sandlot crew. When Smalls first waves at Benny, he receives only a nod back because he is the new kid in the neighborhood. Benny and Small’s friendship is an accurate representation of real life. The way that boys communicate with each other is accurately portrayed in The Sandlot. For boys during the summer it is all about play sports and hanging out with friends. The only thing that was standing in the Sandlot boy’s way was the fact that they were down a player. So just like any other team, the captain, Benny, went out to fill the last spot. In the end creating a friendship that would last forever. “If you build it, he will come” (Kinsella 1). These words of an announcer jump start a struggle for Ray Kinsella to ease the tragic life of Shoeless Joe Jackson. Ray hears a voice of an announcer which leads him to build a baseball field that brings Shoeless Joe Jackson onto the field. However, this field puts his family on the verge of bankruptcy which is just one of the struggles Ray Kinsella is presented in his life. Shoeless Joe Jackson is no stranger to having no money, as he was only making a measly $1.25 as a kid struggling to support his family. He never attended school and was illiterate throughout his entire life. The struggle is completely the same with Ray Kinsella growing up, as he is forced into baseball, which ultimately makes him run away from home. Ray’s hate is Joes love. Joe loves baseball and makes it to the major leagues, but it doesn’t last. Joe’s career is cut short due to the fact he is accused of throwing the World Series, and banned from baseball forever. Rays’s father would have loved it if his son made it to the major leagues because he thought Ray had the potential and talent. However, his only dream was simple, he wanted to play a game of catch with his son, unfortunately, he passed away and he never got to see his son after he ran away. Shoeless Joe Jackson’s death wasn’t any better, as he died guilty of throwing the World Series which was the biggest sports tragedy to date. Tragedies are not uncommon phenomena, Ray Kinsella and Shoeless Joe Jackson have the unfortunate luck to go through a struggle fulfilled and uphill battle in what is suppose to be a wonderful thing, life.
He was a protective big brother figure to the other boys. When he first met Scotty, an awkward, straight A’s, Erector Set architect whiz kid that just moved to the neighborhood, he immediately invited him to go down to the sandlot with him and gave him the nickname “Smalls”. When the other boys opposed the addition of Smalls to their incomplete team, it was Benny that insisted they give him a chance, arguing that everyone should be able to be a part of the team. Gambling addict Connor O’Neil ends up deep in debt after he borrows money from almost every loan shop in town to fuel his addiction. In order to pay the mounds of money that he owes, he is requested to coach a little-league baseball team, the Kekambas. At first, Connor doesn’t start off right with the kids and doesn’t see the point of him being there. Even though Connor paid the kids no attention, they were somehow inspired by his presence. Later, He realizes that he must come to grips at what he wants in his life, and ultimately forms a special bond with the kids on the team.
In the beginning, Smalls was new to the neighborhood and no one wanted to be friends with him except for Benny. Then Benny taught Smalls how to play baseball. Benny then joined the sandlot boys. That shows good friendship to people because friends are there to help and be with people. Especially since Smalls came during the summer time which means he cannot meet new people like he would at school. Benny shows a good example to people here. Where people should talk to someone who is alone and get to know them. Another great example is when the sandlot boys were arguing with the young boys who played baseball as well but had matching socks and uniforms. They showed people the true meaning of friendship because they were on each other's side.
Both younger brothers feel the weight of their older brothers’ legacies. Joey feels pressured to live up to Mike’s (modest) football success after his death. He even quits the soccer team and plans to play high school football. He wants to be like his brother. Paul also grapples with his older brother’s legacy. In this case, however, he wants athletic success in a different sport. Given that Erik’s football success completely monopolizes his parents’ lives, Paul struggles to make a name for himself in soccer. He wants his parents to treat him like they treat Erik, and he wants the respect that his soccer success
True friends are difficult to find in life, especially as an adult. Lennie, a main character in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, was lucky enough to have George, despite all the odds he faced with mental illness. Lennie, having a tall, stocky frame, was intimidating to many people at first glance (Steinbeck 2). However, after they discovered his childlike nature, he quickly became an easy target for ridicule and violence. George sacrifices a normal life to protect Lennie and those he encounters. This relationship is crucial to their survival. The importance of friendship is a major theme found in the book. This is shown through the character’s strong bond between one another, how they face society in the 1930s, and how they influence each other’s actions.
The beginning of the film gives clear showing of the ordinary life. The film starts off with Jimmy playing catch in his front yard picturing himself pitching a no hitter in his first game in the big leagues. With his father in the Navy his family moves to Virginia, Florida, and eventually west Texas chasing still chasing his dreams of the major leagues. Jimmy Morris has a normal life and family with his wife and three children. He is a high school chemistry teacher in Texas who coaches their high school baseball team, the Big Lake Owls. The Owls are not a very successful team that isn’t getting many wins. The film opens well showing implications of Morris setting down after his once shot playing major league baseball.

The Sandlot is a classic sports film that shows how the role of friendship plays in children’s development. The story takes place in a small suburb outside of Los Angeles in the summer of 1962. The main character “Smalls”, just moved to the town with his mom and step dad. He doesn’t really know how to make friends but started watching a group of boys that walked to the ‘sandlot’. Smalls has always stuck to science projects, so baseball is a new subject to him. The step dad has a love of baseball so when Smalls goes into his office he has trophies and a baseball signed by Babe Ruth. Smalls wants to be able to connect with his step dad, so he tries to learn how to play baseball with the guys.
Interpersonal communication is everywhere in society, both in the past, present, and the future. “Marty,” a love story, and a movie made in the fifties, shows many examples of interpersonal communication. In this movie, the main character, Marty, is a decent, socially awkward man who is pressured by his peers and family to find love and get married. He then gets fed up and goes to a club in town and meets a woman named Claire, who is in similar circumstances to him. Marty and Claire then interact and spend time together and Marty experiences companionship for the first time.
The film, The Breakfast Club, is an impressive work of art, addressing almost every aspect of interpersonal communication. This is easily seen here, as I’ve gone through and shown how all these principles of interpersonal communication apply to real-life, using only two short interpersonal interactions from the movie. I’ve explained aspects of interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, verbal misunderstandings, communication styles, gender issues, and self-disclosures. With that said, I believe I have demonstrated my ability to apply principles of interpersonal communication with simulated real-life examples.
Friendship is the relationship that helps humans get through everyday life. Without friends people would not have a strong support system or someone to have their backs through difficult situations. Friendship has been seen to be a key component in the development of characters. Directors and authors portray friends as positive influences on characters. Friends are especially important in The Hobbit and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Bilbo Baggins and Sherlock Holmes experience the benefits of a strong friendships. Through the friendships experienced by both Bilbo and Sherlock new characteristics arise such as the development of emotions and courage.
“… the communication choices we make determine the personal, interpersonal, and relationship outcomes that follow.” (McCornack, S., 2016) Non-verbal communications happen to us daily with everything that we do. From the hand gestures that we make when talking to others, or even the way that we walk. We show different types of body language based off the environment that we put ourselves into. We can show completely different non-verbal communications in the way that we greet someone that we know, or with someone that we have never met before. This is like wise with the way that we say goodbye to that person. A good example of this would be the lobby of a hockey rink on a busy Monday night. It’s a good location for observing human interactions with greetings and goodbyes, because it’s the place where everyone must walk through to get to the ice arena. It’s also where parents like to wait for the children to get dressed in the locker rooms.
