Pay for Play? Introduction Imagine you are a troubled kid that grew up in a gang-controlled neighborhood. You live day to day not knowing if today is you or your family‘s last day. Now imagine someone telling you that they can give your family money to help them get out of the hood and into a safe place. You have a scholarship to a major university and if you work hard you will become pro and make millions of dollars a year. But you can’t bear to see your family suffer any longer so you take the bit of money and use it to get your family to be safe. Now that same university is filing sanctions against you and the person that gave you the money. They are dropping your scholarship and now no other college in the country will take you. Now you are back to where you started and you don’t know how to do anything else. This is the issue with college sports these days, too many troubled kids are working their butts off to stay out of trouble throughout their childhood and keep up with their sport just so they can play for a university and in return they get to go to school for free. What about any other things they need? Are they supposed to just live their lives off of free tuition at a university? According to USA today, kids that participate in college athletics devote on average more than 43 hours per week to their sport and they devote on average 38 hours per week on academics (USAtoday). However, NCAA rules state that a university is not allowed to have more than 20 hours a week of practice no matter what sport it is. Even with this illegal workload that is forced upon these kids, the players are still expected to follow every other rule that the NCAA enforces. These young men are putting over 80 hours per week on their sport and their schoolwork, and even though $2,000 is less than minimum wage, scholarships cover their living and education so that money will go towards whatever the individual needs.     Should college athletes receive pay for what they do? You’ve probably seen this pop-up a million times, and thought about it. You’ve probably figured why should they? Aren’t they already receiving benefits from a full-ride scholarship? But then an athlete will get caught up in a scandal like Johnny Manziel, where he signed footballs for money.. then you think well why shouldn’t he receive that money? And you then contradict yourself. But shouldn’t they receive money from outside sources, and then the benefits from the school. Not get a salary from the school just the benefits they’re already receiving, and money from sponsors. Wouldn’t that make sense considering the money they’re making the school? According to an ESPN report Alabama University makes $123,769,841 in total revenue from sports. (College Athletics Revenue) Yes ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY THREE MILLION. Yet an athlete from Alabama can only receive benefits from a scholarship.. That doesn’t seem right. You would want to be payed when the opportunity arises. It should only be fair these players get a piece of the revenue pie, after all they are the ones creating the revenue. The players should be getting benefits to allow them to pay for basic college needs, grow up to be responsible adults, and allow the NCAA to thrive. This would allow for the NCAA to truly thrive as a sporting association.
