Health Issues Caused by Food Production

By 2012, United States ranked first in obesity rate among all developed countries(The World Post). According to Gallup research, the graph of obesity rate tells us that "The adult obesity rate so far in 2013 is 27.2%, up from 26.2%"(Sharpe). Obesity is just one little sector of health issues caused by food production. Like obesity, many health issues are rising and increasing their victims from what we eat. How the food we eat makes us ill? To solve the health issues, we must look carefully at the ingredients and other sources that are included in the food we eat because they might be the causes of health issues.

One of the health issues that can be observed from someone near you is diabetes. Mostly, obese and overweight people have type 2 diabetes. Health Educators, Liza Barnes and Nicole Nichols say, "More than 80% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. Carryingexcess weight around your abdomen and waistline (known as the "apple" shape), greatly increases your risk of diabetes."(Barnes and Nichols pg.2) Also, there are many people who want to lose weight have misunderstanding of nutrition facts. This misunderstanding comes from tricks of food production. One of the major sneaky food source that causes type 2 diabetes is artificial sweetener. People think low calorie intake is the best way to be healthy and lose weight. People working at food production knows that but, if they put just pure sugar into sodas or other food, it will build up massive calories. Artificial sweetener helps to take that massive calories down to relieve consumers. For example, many diet sodas have zero calorie but, so much art...

The result: Today trans fats are found in 40% of the products on your supermarket shelves."(Mann) However, trans fats build fatty plaque and clog arteries that cause severe heart disease such as heart attack and stroke, and it also raise bad cholesterol level(low density lipoprotein) in our body(Mann).

Food production may help consumers to buy cheaper food and ease them to cook faster or just not cook at all by developing food science and producing chemicals such as artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and hydrogenated oils. However, to save their pockets and produce food in cheaper way, the food manufacturers also deceive consumers by adding those artificial chemicals that harm our body. Chemicals made by food production will make you feel appetite, but your body will not feel too good about consuming them into itself.
