Wally Unloads A “Gopher”
During the 1950‘s suburbs such as Levitown were springing up all across the country, and the so-called American dream was easier to achieve for everyday Americans than ever before. They had just come out of two decades dominated by The Great Depression and World War Two, and finally prosperity was in sight. The need for women to work out of the home that was present during the war was no more, and women were overwhelmingly relegated to female-dominated professions like nursing, secretaries, and teachers, if they worked at all. Televisions became very popular, and quickly became part of the American cultural canon of entertainment. Leave It To Beaver is a classic American television show, encompassing values such as respect, responsibility and learning from your mistakes. But, at least in the episode used for this essay, it is also shockingly sexist to a modern viewer. This begs the question, what does the episode The Blind Date Committee1 say about the gender expectations of the 1950’s?
The gender expectations in Leave It To Beaver appear to be consistent with the time period. The Cleavers live in the prosperous suburban town of Mayfield2. Mr. Ward Cleaver works outside the home, he is fair and gives lots of advice to his sons, as well as having a very cordial relationship with his wife. Mrs. June Cleaver is a homemaker, she performs the tasks expected of her as a mother and wife very cheerfully, Wally and Beaver are respectful to their parents, but also make mistakes. Each episode follows a familiar formula, there is a conflict that is resolved by the end of the episode, usually teaching something to Wally or Beaver. According Leave It To Beaver (and shows like it) Women are supposed to be happy homemakers, pretty and compliant, obeying their husbands and fathers, not smart or successful in their own right. The episode is reinforcing gender stereotypes in a way that is blatant and paints the women as overwhelmingly simple and happy with the way their world is. This episode (and the entire series) is post-publishing of Betty Friedan’s infamous book Feminine Mystique, as the fight for Women’s Liberation is really beginning to heat up. But watching Leave It To Beaver you would have no idea that the world is just beginning to change for women at this time. Sadly many of the ideas and social stereotypes are still all too present in today’s world, abet in more sexualized and obvious ways. As I see it, the distance from then to today is much too close for comfort.
A main theme in this small town’s culture is the issue of gender and the division of roles between the two. Not uncommon for the 1950’s, many women were taught from a young age to find a good man, who could provide for them and a family, settle down and have children – the ideal “happy family.” As Harry states after singing the showstopper “Kids,” “I have the All-American family: A great wife, 2 wonderful kids and a good job.”
Leave it to Beaver was one of the most popular television series of the 1950’s where June Cleaver was the personification of a traditional wife. The show depicts a traditional family where Ward Cleaver, the father, with his wife June raise their two sons: Wally and Beaver. You giggle at the antics of their two boys as they grow up during an innocent time with problems that would seem laughable today. In the Leave it to Beaver series episodes “Teacher Comes to Dinner” and ”Teacher’s Pet” you see June take on the feminine gender role and Ward take on the masculine gender role (“Teacher Comes to Dinner” ”Teacher’s Pet”). Upon deeper analysis of both episodes you observe June gaily take on the traditional role of caretaking the family yet absent from both episodes is the reality of being a traditional wife that is women in these lives often have a limited life, no income and are mostly alone.

For over centuries, society had established the societal standard of the women. This societal standard pictured the ideal American woman running the household and taking care of the children while her husband provided for the family. However, between 1770 and 1860, this societal standard began to tear at the seams. Throughout this time period, women began to search for a new ideal of American womanhood by questioning and breaking the barriers society had placed upon them.
What do Betty from "Pleasantville," June from "Leave it to Beaver," and Donna Reed from "The Donna Reed Show" all have in common? They all represent the image of the perfect housewife in the 1950s. They represent women who gladly cooked, cleaned, dressed in pearls and wore high heals while waiting for their all-knowing husbands to come home. They represent women who can only find fulfillment in male domination and nurturing maternal love. Tillie Olsen, as a single mother with four children (204), provides readers with another view of women. Through the representation of the narrator in I Stand Here Ironing, Olsen contradicts the image of the 50s ideal woman, a happy housewife and a perfect mother.
Discriminating gender roles throughout the movie leaves one to believe if they are supposed to act a certain way. This film gives women and men roles that don’t exist anymore, during the 60s women were known to care for the family and take care of the house, basically working at home. However, a male was supposed to fight for his family, doing all the hard work so his wife didn’t have too. In today’s world, everyone does what makes them happy. You can’t tell a woman to stay at home, that makes them feel useless. Furthermore, males still play the roles of hard workers, they are powerful compared to a woman. However, in today’s world a male knows it isn’t right to boss a woman around, where in the 60s, it happened, today women have rights to do what they want not what they are
Many parts of history show that the 1950’s was a time of great turbulence and unrest in both politics and social life. All this unrest was caused by major historical events, including the Red Scare/McCarthyism and the Cold War. However, although many aspects of life in the 50’s were in such disarray, gender roles were not one of those aspects. In fact, there was a very narrow, strict idea of what it meant to be a male and a female during this time. The following discusses what was considered proper gender roles in the 1950’s and how these roles vary compared to the gender roles portrayed in the 1955 movie, Rebel Without a Cause.
The era of the 1950s was an iconic era in American history. The American dream of freedom, self empowerment, and success was growing. After world war 1, the ideals of american culture changed. The country saw the aftermath of the war in the countries of western Europe where communism was beginning to take hold, and the U.S tried to be the opposite. Gender roles are being conformed for television viewing, for example, In episode 2, Raymond stated “I get my exercise and babysit at the same time” when he lifted his twin boys in his arms like a gym equipment’s in front of his friend smiling. Why does a man has to be the one to do something idiotic like that when there would never be a television universe, where a mother would ever do something like that, it just wasn’t a “female” thing to do. Why was Debra the one who had to ask her husband to say, “I love you”? When in reality either one of them could have ask something like that without stereotyping the female. In episode 1, Ray boasted, “Look, I cleaned the house” and Debra was very happy to see that actually happened. Again, why does it had to be a surprise when this was something both males and females do in everyday life without being “surprised” by it or making such an accomplishment out of getting the house cleaned. It was expected of women to get married, have children, buy a suburban home and do housework. The video, “A Word to the Wives” displays what Betty Friedan calls, “the feminine mystique”. The video presents the dilemma of a woman who is not happy because she does not have the newest house. Her friend has all the new “necessities” in order to successfully complete housework. Women were defined by what they had, not by who they were. Friedan’s research found that despite fulfilling the “feminine mystique”, when women were questioned they realized they were not truly satisfied with their life. The woman in the video would not of been fulfilled by buying a new house, or object. Women were deprived of the need to put their skills and talents to a purpose. The video, “Are You Popular” also shows the expectations of women.. It promotes that appearance, serving others, and rewarding men with “women” gifts such as baking is how to be popular. It condones girls for “parking in cars” but accepts men who do the same thing. Women must earn the approval of men, and men must earn women by doing thing women are “incapable” of. Betty Friedan’s book, The Feminine Mystique, explains the mind set of society in the 1960s. She writes that the women of the ‘60s were identified only as creatures looking for “sex, babies, and home” (Friedan 36). She goes on to say “The only passion, the only pursuit, the only goal a woman [was] permitted [was] the pursuit of a man” (Friedan 36). This mind set, this “feminine mystique,” is clearly shown throughout the show Mad Men. The side effect of the feminine mystique hurt all the women of this time.
