‘The Chrysalids’ by John Wyndham is about an innocent boy with telepathic abilities living in an anti-mutant society. This boy, David, faces several challenges which made him realise of the ways of the world he is in. The main theme of the novel is discrimination and it can be seen from the society of Waknuk, Joseph Strorm and the setting of the book.
The society of Waknuk is taught to follow the laws of God and the ’Definition of Man’ for they fear the punishment that they will receive if they do not so. This fear has blinded the people of Waknuk, so much so that they cannot differentiate between right and wrong, devotion and discrimination.
The Waknukians are discriminating against any form of deviation, human, animals and even crops.
Since deviations are strongly frowned upon in the society, most deviations are killed or sent into the Fringes, where they are exposed to the wild and have to survive on their own as a form of punishment. Deviations are robbed of their rights to live a normal life just because of their few physical imperfections. This can be clearly seen in the case of Spider Man, also known as Gordon Strorm. Gordon Strorm could’ve been the heir of Waknuk but due to his unusually long arms and legs, he was discriminated and sent to the Fringes, when his life could’ve been way better if he was given the right to live in Waknuk. The women of Waknuk are also discriminated if they have given birth to three deviational children as their husbands will ostracize them. The society chooses their devotion over humanity and this made them unfavourable against deviants, even though the deviants didn’t purposely do anything wrong against the religion. The author is using the Sealand woman to further enforce this message of discrimination as can be seen from the quote ‘The essential quality of life is living, the essential quality of living is change, change is evolution: and we are part of it’.
In conclusion, this novel revolves around the theme of discrimination and how we are actually similar to the characters created by John Wyndham. People are still being discriminated in our present society due to their races and religion and in a sense we are like Joseph Strorm, if we continue to discriminate people due to their differences as it just means that we can’t accept change and that isn’t any different from Joseph Strorm.
Ever since the abolition of slavery in the United States, America has been an ever-evolving nation, but it cannot permanently erase the imprint prejudice has left. The realities of a ‘post-race world’ include the acts of everyday racism – those off-handed remarks, glances, implied judgments –which flourish in a place where explicit acts of discrimination have been outlawed. It has become a wound that leaves a scar on every generation, where all have felt what Rankine had showcased the words in Ligon’s art, “I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background” (53). Furthermore, her book works in constant concert with itself as seen in the setting of the drugstore as a man cuts in front of the speaker saying, “Oh my god, I didn’t see you./ You must be in a hurry, you offer./ No, no, no, I really didn’t see you” (77). Particularly troublesome to the reader, as the man’s initial alarm, containing an assumed sense of fear, immediately changing tone to overtly insistent over what should be an accidental mistake. It is in these moments that meaning becomes complex and attention is heightened, illuminating everyday prejudice. Conclusion: In all, racial oppression and identification is a concurrent theme in Butler’s works that have been discussed. Butler’s examinations involving the sense of pride and passion towards uniqueness and individualism are evident in many different perspectives. In Butler’s works, the passion the main characters have towards themselves in an alien world teach the reader important values and lessons against negativity and racial discrimination.
...it but try to make a change. Through Chris Jaynes, Johnson expresses to his readers the importance of taking a stance on the issue of Whiteness by making it a very prominent ideal in his novel. Johnson furthers his agreement against Whiteness by expressing the fact that the issue not only needs to be identified but that there needs to be more of a push to change the issue. Sticking to the normal ways of trying to fix the issue of Whiteness, such as using a diversity committee, are no longer acceptable in the fight against Whiteness as it has proved to be unsuccessful. Instead Mat Johnson challenges the reader to notice the practices that keep American literature segregated and consider how effective the methods put in place truly are in advancing American literature.
The people of Waknuk do not utilize the advantages of permitting deviations and blasphemies to be a part of the society, consequently this decision troubles the society. First, the society does not let deviations that are beneficial to the society live amongst them. When Uncle Axel explains to David about how the churchgoers would not accept spices that had come from a foreign land because the spices could be a deviation, then Uncle Axel concludes, “Whatever they were, they are profitable enough now for ships to sail south again” (61). The rejection of the spices by the churchgoers was to their own disadvantage to exploit the profitability of the spices. Second, due to the high deviation rate families are force to destroy their crops and livestock. David asks Angus Morton what is troubling him and Angus replies, “Weeks of work gone up in smoke, pigs, sheep and cows gobbling up good food just to produce ’bominations” (87). Since the society does not accept deviations, therefore Angus Morton’s hard work is profitless. Finally, the attacks by the Fringes people are a vexation to the inhabitants of Waknuk. Some of the people in the novel are also very bigoted like David’s father. He thinks he is the king of the castle and can’t be wrong. If he says something it should happen like where he has an argument with the inspector about the giant horses or when he burnt that families cat because it didn’t have a tail eg “It is your moral duty to issue an order against these so called horses!!” Various people including David’s father all agree that deviants are from the devil and should be castrated or thrown out of society.

The novel revolves around the superstitions which existed in the society at that time. Genetic invariance has been elevated to the highest religious principle, and humans with even minor mutations were considered "Blasphemies" and the handiwork of the Devil. The novel ‘Jasper Jones’ and the film ‘Jindabyne’ both use the representation of characters and their relationships to challenge the treatment of individuals with regards to race, class and gender. The historical contexts surrounding these two texts sets the basis for the stratification and racial discrimination present. The lack of dignity that is depicted between the relationships formed between characters displays the regard in which communities treat each other. ‘Jasper Jones’ and ‘Jindabyne’ are comparable texts as it is clear that the gap between these communities has reduced since the time period of ‘Jasper Jones’ when compared to ‘Jindabyne’, however, it is identified that this gap still exists.

For many year humans have been trying to fight against discrimination in their communities, but it's an uphill battle that doesn’t seem like it’s been fully wiped out yet in our society. Discrimination and Prejudice has been a key issue that has affected many people around the world. In the movie that we saw in class, “My Cousin Vinny” (1992) it focused on these key issues of prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes and even eye witness testimonies. In the movie it focuses on these key issues while bringing a little humor to the viewers. In this paper I will be going into more detail of how this movie really brought to light these key issues.
By coming into the country, other races are denied of superiority and are exposed to an already “racialized society”. (pp.78) Oppression also comes into place with hierarchy, such as the “Bonds of Sisterhood” by Romero that portrays a difference between African American servants and housewives. It sets up an inequality between both women, showing inferiority over African American woman. One last reading that has emerged and captivated attention is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. Stevenson expresses oppression in one of his own narratives when he was discriminated by two S.W.A.T officers. He describes his experience terrifying yet shocking since he had done nothing wrong. He was accused of a burglary based on the color of his skin because he lived in a white neighborhood. Not only that, but he was also investigated and searched which violated his rights. This unlawful act portrayed the ignorances for complex, multiple, and cross cutting relationships because Stevenson was an educated lawyer; yet, was seen different by the two officers in his own residence. Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.

Margaret Atwood reviles in her book how standardized oppression can easily cause personalized oppression, and how if one accepts oppression they get from being in a society which is oppressive then that person starts to feel internally oppressed. Almost all of the characters in this book feel both of these oppressions. Through out the book Margaret Atwood used short phrases to exaggerate the personalized oppression which the characters felt. The way in which the novel was written allows the reader enter the mind and thoughts of the narrator, which helps us understand that the oppression the characters are feeling from the society leads to the personal oppression they feel. Margaret Atwood shows us the continues cycle of oppression and how it is a continues cycle, she shows us the connection between standardized oppression and personal oppression and that group oppression leads to individual
The main character is completely alienated from the world around him. He is a black man living in a white world, a man who was born in the South but is now living in the North, and his only form of companionship is his dying wife, Laura, whom he is desperate to save. He is unable to work since he has no birth certificate—no official identity. Without a job he is unable to make his mark in the world, and if his wife dies, not only would he lose his lover but also any evidence that he ever existed. As the story progresses he loses his own awareness of his identity—“somehow he had forgotten his own name.” The author emphasizes the main character’s mistreatment in life by white society during a vivid recollection of an event in his childhood when he was chased by a train filled with “white people laughing as he ran screaming,” a hallucination which was triggered by his exploration of the “old scars” on his body. This connection between alienation and oppression highlight Ellison’s central idea.
