Since I was a child I have always been very excited and waiting patiently for Christmas to arrive because I always thought on Christmas as an occasion when the family gets together. And this past year (2009) was not different from the others; I was very excited waiting for Christmas. Especially, because I was going to spend this holiday in Mexico with my grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins, but all that emotion did not take me to a Christmas full of joy as the past years. Christmas was very important to me because it was Camila’s (my daughter) first time in Mexico, but after this holiday, the way I appreciated and treated my family changed. After Christmas 2009, I learned to value my mom and dad; I also learned to understand how important my brothers and sisters are in my life. In fact, something else that did not help my Christmas to get better was that it was very difficult and sad to feel my Papamin’s (my grandpa) absence. However, it is sad to think that I had to be without my family to learn what they are worth, and how important they are in my life.

I was born in the Dominican Republic, November 2, 1982. I lived and grew up in a countryside where everybody knew each other. My childhood years were full of wonderful experiences where I felt loved by my parents and my family. I went to school around 6 years old. I had to walk around 30 minutes to get there from my house. My father was a farmer who had to work long hours in order to sustain our big family. My mother was a housewife; she was in charge of taking care of us. I have five siblings, three boys and two girls. I remember that at that time we did not have many things in our house. We did not have electricity and also we did not have a service of water. I remembered that my father had to go to the river to get water for the necessities of the house. At that time my family was very poor, but my
My favorite holiday is Christmas because I feel joyful. Also, I can feel how warm the atmosphere is almost like a fireplace. In an apartment of white walls, there is the living room with a tall, dark green Christmas tree decorated with colorful blue, pink and purple Christmas ornaments, and colorful red bright lights. In the meantime, my mom and my husband are cooking dinner, and there is the smell of a pumpkin candle burning on top of the table. While we wait for the food to be ready, we all sit down in the living room to watch some classic movies like “Rudolph”, “The little Drummer boy”, and even if it’s not to classic “Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Eventually, we can smell the orange chicken and the yellow rice with mozzarella
On September 6, 1620, 102 men, women and children from England boarded a small cargo boat called the Mayflower and set sail for the New World. The passengers left their homes in England in search of religious freedom from the King of England. Today they are known as "pilgrims."
The description of the clinic and his observations create a sense of artificiality and lack of individual significance. The reader is first introduced into the waiting room of a clinic: “just after Christmas”, “artificial limbs” and “packages wrapped empty as rattles” (Cuadros 120). The descriptions of the decorations create a sense of artificiality and temporality. Before Christmas there were significant and valuable decorations, after Christmas they become trash.
I stepped out of the chilly November air and into the warmth of my home. The first snowfall of the year had hit early in the morning, and the soft, powdery snow provided entertainment for hours. As I laid my furry mittens and warm hat on the bench to dry, I was immediately greeted with the rich scent of sweet apple pie, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and the twenty-pound turkey my mother was preparing for our Thanksgiving feast.
...preciating the lessons my family taught me throughout the years. Although at that time I didn’t know better, now I realize that I am the person I am today because of my family. My family supported my individuality without sacrificing their role in shaping my identity. For example, I was embarrassed to speak Spanish, especially around my American friends. Even so, I was blessed because my grandfather only allowed us to speak to him in Spanish. He knew that we would appreciate it later in life, and now I thank him for it. I have friends that wish their families would have done the same for them, but it is too late. Family is there to guide us through those tough times when we do not know who we are. In the end, one’s true identity reveals itself regardless of what one does to masquerade or alter it.
It was about two years ago when I arrived in United States of America, and I still remember the day when I left my native country, Honduras. As I recall, one day previous to my departure, I visited my relatives who live in San Pedro Sula. They were all very happy for me to see me except my grandmother Isabel. She looked sad; even though she tried to smile at all times when I was talking to her, I knew that deep inside of her, her heart was broken because of my departure the next morning. I remember that I even told her, “Grandma, do not worry about me, I’ll be fine. I promise that I will write you letters and send you pictures as much as possible.” Here reply was, “I know sweetie I know you will.” Suddenly after she said that I started to cry. For som...
People have celebrated a mid-winter festival since pre-historic times. They marked the beginning of longer hours of daylight with fires and ritual offerings. The Roman festival of Saturnalia -- a time for feasting and gambling -- lasted for weeks in December. Germanic tribes of Northern Europe also celebrated mid-winter with feasting, drinking and religious rituals.
The festival that I am doing is considered to be a big diverse holiday that is celebrated each December for a period of time. The feeling of Christmas makes most people decorate their homes and churches, get trees and bring them into their homes, prettying them up with silver and gold. ( Jesus Birth. unknown. N/A, N/A.)

Ever since I could remember, I have spent Christmas at my grandmother’s house, a house which is full of comfort, warmth, and happiness. At Christmas, I have always been able to escape the cold and dark real world allowing myself to truly enjoy just several moments in time. These moments have left impressionable memories from my childhood making Christmas a holiday that is special to me and my family. It is a time for my family to get together, share stories, laugh, and even cry.
As I look out my window I see tiny snowflakes slowly drifting down. I can hear the roar of laughter coming from the living room downstairs. Soon enough Saint Nick will be upon us. Christmas always brings everyone home for the holidays. Christmas is my favorite holiday because of the traditions my families and I celebrate that include our Christmas Eve routine, Christmas morning routine, and giving back to our community.
There may be many holidays around the world, but christmas is celebrated the most. Christmas is something special in family because it means everyone can unite together as a family. This christmas happens on the 25th of December and is celebrated each year. We get together to celebrate the birth of jesus christ. Mexican culture Christmas is a little different. Something that is done traditionally is eat food. Also many fun things are done like fireworks, pinata, and a wood fire. Furthermore christmas is celebrated on the 24th of december for us traditionally, and presents are opened at 12:00 AM.This things will be explained in the following paragraphs.
In many ways Christmas is similar to Thanksgiving in the way we celebrate it. We switch sides, sometimes Christmas is at our house, tons of food is made and we play games. Depending on what side of the family we’re spending Christmas with, there’s a theme, for example, about two or three years ago we spent Christmas with my mom’s side of the family and it was a pajama party and last Christmas we spent with my dad’s side the theme was ugly Christmas sweaters. Every year no matter where we spend Christmas, we always have to get some of my great grandma’s amazing and delicious Champurrado. She makes Champurrado every single year, she won’t tell anyone how she makes it for some reason, but her Champurrado is like heaven in a cup. On both sides of my family,it’s tradition for us get together on Christmas Eve and we have dinner, watch movies, play games, and even take naps, all until midnight and that’s when we open our presents. Also, on both sides, the adults do White Elephant and sometimes depending on what the majority vote is, they’ll do a secret santa exchange. The only thing my mom’s side of the family does differently than my dad’s, is that prior to getting together on Christmas Eve, the adults put each kid’s name in a hat and each person draws a name, and the name they draw is the kid they have to buy a gift for, and they’ll say the least or most amount of money they can spend on that gift.
Chinese New Year is the most widely celebrated tradition in Asia. The tradition is usually celebrated on the first day of the first month on the Chinese Lunar calendar. This tradition is rooted in centuries-old customs and is one of the most popular public holidays in China. Apart from China, this tradition is also celebrated in many Asian countries like Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. There are many values and rituals tied with this tradition. For example, people would wear red clothing, decorate the house with red paper, and give children "lucky money" in red envelopes. According to legend, it is said that red can drive away bad luck, which is why the color red is highly emphasized. In myths, our ancestors would light bamboo stalks, believing that the crackling flames would scare off evil spirits. This is why fireworks and firecrackers are set off during this special tradition. Other values and traditions during Chinese New Year dinner such as eating specific dishes during the New Years Eve Dinner, exchanging red envelopes, and cleaning the house. These traditions all emphasize one value: the importance of family reunion during Chinese New Year. Family reunion is essential because it is a time to interact with family and friends who often times do not live nearby. Family and relatives will plan their schedules around Chinese New Year dinner, instead of taking family for granted. Adults also teach children important tradition and lessons during Chinese New Year so that when they grow older, they would continue this tradition with their families.
