Life Leads to Many Different Choices
I’ve always had a love for science. When I was young I wanted to be a scientist. As I got older I wanted to become a doctor, and now I’m pursuing a degree in teaching.
Being a scientist would’ve been the best thing in the world. I used to go outside, catch bugs and study them. I’d look at rocks and try to figure out what they were made of. I’d take stuff apart to figure out how it worked or what it was made of. One year I got a microscope kit for Christmas. I’d sit for hours looking at stuff under the microscope. I looked at everything under that microscope from bugs found in the yard to leaves from trees, even just a small plain sheet of paper. I wanted to be a scientist and work at NASA during that period of my life.
When entering high school things were changing, but I still loved science. Up until my eleventh grade year I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I had entered a club that gave me a four-year scholarship for college if I went into the science field. My eleventh grade year I took a high school anatomy class and loved it. This made me really want to become a doctor. I wanted to become a Pediatrician because I’ve always loved kids. When I was younger other than science I used to baby-sit. I thought pediatric care would be the most wonderful thing at that period of my life.
Up until this summer I wanted to become a Pediatrician. There were many factors that influenced why I wanted to become a teacher. One factor was I’m unsure of myself in being able to get into medical school and being able to do the work. So teaching was next on my list. Another factor is I don’t want to be in college a whole lot longer. I want to get a master’s degree later on but at this point in my life I want to get on with it. Another factor is I don’t have the money to go on to medical school, so teaching is my next option. My last factor is over the summer I worked in the Energy Express program and loved it. During Energy Express I mentored a group of eight students read, write, and do art projects.
When my first grade teacher asked me what I wanted to be in the future I told her, “I want to be a doctor.” My answer stayed exactly the same when my eleventh grade English teacher asked the question. Ever since I was little science has always captured my interest. I was fascinated by the way our body worked and how everything had an explanation behind it.
I came to the United States with my family in 1997, after we survived a violent robbery. My parents wanted me and my sisters to grow up in a safe environment where we could thrive and have a promising future. When I started college at Florida Atlantic University my interest in medicine intensified, and I was delighted to pursue a major in biology on the pre-medical track. Over my college years the connections between science and its clinical applications became clear, and my determination to become a physician grew stronger.
Throughout high school and during my undergraduate studies, education was never a top priority for me. Only during the past two years, in the "real world", have I realized the importance of education. I look back at those years and wish I had done more and realized all the potential I had in my hands and not wasted so much time. During my undergraduate career my social activities consumed my life. My friends were not motivated to do well in school so I followed their lead. My grades were low, and I did not even care. After I graduated in 1997 with a Psychology B.A. and lost touch with my old friends and old ways, I have realized that I should have spent more time doing some soul searching and thinking what it was that I wanted to do with my life. I liked Psychology but what I really wanted to do was work with children more closely. I had spent my junior and senior years involved in internships at Head Start and at a High School in a Program for teenaged mothers. I loved my work there. At Head Start I was a Teacher Aid for the pre-school, teaching the children to read, numbers etc. And at the High School I counseled the teenaged mothers, took care of their kids while they went to school and after the school day I tutored them with their homework. After being out of school for a while, I started to miss that. The feeling that I was teaching something those kids, the feeling that I was making a difference. I was determined to find a job in education, with my background in Psychology, how hard could it be? I found work at a residential school for runaways and abused teenaged females. It was great! I was ready to go, I was going to change the world and change those girls lives. What I didn't realize is that will alone does not make me a teacher and that I needed training, a lot of training. I made a lot of mistakes in that job. I got discouraged and decided to forget about working with children, forget teaching and do something else that paid more. So, I got a job as a Secretary, I did that for about two years. Teaching, working with children was always on my mind.
When I was born, my father was in medical school. He was a practicing doctor by the time I was four and was the first person in southern California to get an MRI machine for his office. Being one of the pioneers of Magnetic Resonance Imagining has made him very successful and allowed for my family to be very well off. From this I have always considered being a doctor. When I was in middle school I fell in love with human anatomy and animal biology. It was a very young age for me to be so interested in that type of fire. Most children at the age of 11 or 12 years old I fascinated with the stars or what temperature makes liquids freeze. I wanted to dissect things I was not afraid of the frog north-south all I wanted to understand how the lungs worked and how the intestines worked anywhere in the body you can find the specific organ. You see, that's the type of science that was a driving force for me to achieve in school. Becoming a researcher was not something I ever dreamed of doing until a friend pointed out that it was exactly what I wanted to. I immediately began looking for an opportunity to study Neuroscience, and it just so happened that at the school that I had always dreamed of going to, has the only undergraduate Neuroscience program in the state. It all just clicked after that. I began to do a little reading and studying on my own, in order to learn more about what I was interested in. As time went on, I realized how much I truly would want to make a career out of becoming a Neuroscience researcher. While I know I may never make a great medical discovery, there is also the small chance that I win a Nobel Peace Prize, and that is what will keep me going.
Since the age of 12, I have been desperately in love with science. I constantly attempt to soak up as much knowledge of the world around me as possible. I am incredibly infatuated with the human body and yearn to become a surgeon when I get older. More specifically, I would like to be a Cardiothoracic Pediatric Surgeon. Helping and healing people speaks to me as a distinct calling and I hope to be able to fulfill such a calling in the future.
In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, but I felt that I needed to know how to choose a medical specialty that I feel is right for me. My first step was to change my major. I chose to change my major to biology. My love for science led me to this decision. I began to explore the opportunities open to biology students.
The career I chose to research was Aerospace Engineering. One of the reasons I chose this career is because I have always been fascinated with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and space in general. I have also been very interested in an engineering career for some time because of my knack towards math and science. This specific career interests me because it combines my interests in space and working with NASA with math and science that I have little trouble understanding. Aerospace Engineering is a very demanding job, but it is something I am very passionate about. Aerospace Engineering is the building of space craft and the adjustment of space craft technology to safely carry people and materials into space.
a) For many years now I have aspired to be a Pediatrician. My mother is a radiologist technologist so I’ve grown up around the medical field. From an early age, medicine and science struck my interest and they are both subjects I am very passionate about learning. I love helping people, especially kids, which is why I have chosen to pursue this career field. I truly want to make a difference in modern medicine and become the best health care provider I can be.
My career goal is to aspire to become one of the top Forensic Scientist in the country, and eventually become an International Baccalaureate Chemistry teacher. Ever since I was little, my dream was always to be a Marine Biologist. Marine Biologist seems like such a fun and interesting job I would love to part take in. My Aunt is a Marine Biologist and I feel she had a great impact on me when deciding that Marine Biology is something I really want to go involved in once I’m older. I have not always wanted to be a teacher. I always knew that I wanted to work with children in some way, but I was pretty sure that teaching was not for me. I was well on my way in my junior year of college working toward a biology degree so that I could become a pediatric physician’s assistant. I still cannot explain what happened, but one week I was a biology major, and the next I knew that I have always been meant to teach children. I suppose I just took the longer route to get there than most people do. The two main reasons that I have chosen to become a teacher is that I believe that teaching is extremely personally rewarding in many ways and the fact that I can actively make a difference in someone’s life.

As a child I had always been interested in medicine and the medical world. My passion of learning about the human body started when I was younger. I encountered many health problems throughout my toddler years. I looked up to the doctors and medical staff around me and continue to look up to them, they were and are still my heros. That is why my goal in life is to become a general surgeon. I want to be able to save many lives since it is possible now to do so now.
