Recommended: Child labour and how to eradicate it

Child labor is considered as a form of child abuse, it being the exploitation of a child’s rights and freedoms. Therefore, child labour is when underage children are employed, this happens because a child labourer is paid less than an adult labourer. Consequently employers have more children working for them because they spend less paying the children. “Child labor usually means work that is done by children under the age of 15 (14 in some developing countries) that restricts or damages a child's physical, emotional, social and/or spiritual growth.”1 Child labour is not something that just recently evolved. As a matter of fact, child labour dates back to the 1780s and the 1840s, where child labour was predominant worldwide. In 1788, it was estimated that 60% of the work force of the English and Scottish text mills, comprised of children because the children could be easily exploited. As the world continued to develop there was a demand for an educated work force, this was when the financial rift among people began. Despite the fact that there were attempts to eradicate child labour, for a while all those attempts proved to be futile. In 1893, the Act for the Prevention of Cruelty to and Better Protection of Children was made; this was under the guidance of Lady Ritchie, wife to the Chief Justice at that time. The act paved way to the creation of many children’s aid societies, including Peterborough, Toronto and Ottawa-Carleton which were the first three children’s aid societies. 1 News, Cbc. Child labor was a prominent issue, because there were no systems to ensure the safety of children. During the start of the industrial revolution, there was a “high demand” for labor (Robson 53). Many families moved from rural areas to new, industrialized cities. After a while things weren’t looking as “promising” as they did before (Boone 23). In order to maintain, families had to put almost all of their family members to work. This led to a rise in the number of child labor. Using children to do all of the hard work, the mining companies believed, was the most sensible and efficient way to get the job done. Because the children were a lot smaller, it was easy for them to “maneuver through tight spaces” and on top of that the children demanded little or no pay at all(Boone 43 ). These wages were enough to persuade companies to use children for all sorts of dangerous jobs such as coal mining and chimney sweeps. Children were called to do many other “horrible” jobs, jobs that adults in this era could not bear, just so long as the bills were paid (Robson 18). The working conditions and treatment of young children during this era was horrible and a lot was done to put an end to it.
