“However, to develop our sociological vision we must do just that: We must be willing to look at our own society with cool detachment, careful observation, and scientific analysis. We must examine the groups we live in- our family, our neighbours, our classmates, our nation- as if we had just set foot in a new and strange land.” (Goode, 1977, P. 3)
In this essay I intend to demonstrate my understanding of the ‘Sociological Imagination’, as well as critically discuss what C. Wright Mills meant when he spoke about the ‘Sociological Imagination’. Furthermore, I will apply such understandings and concepts to education/schooling in South Africa by discovering a challenge and by discussing its public issue and personal trouble.

The child will be disadvantaged in the sense that it will affect them publically and personally. It affects a child personally, due to the fact that it affects their ability to learn, read and write therefore, causing them not to perform to the best of his/her capability. It also affects their emotional well being, therefore causing them to end up with behavioural and emotional difficulties because they become frustrated due to the fact that they cannot communicate. This will then cause the child to act out therefore, causing the teacher to have to punish him/her. Furthermore, there is an innumerable amount of stress at home from the parent’s behalf as they are not able to help their children and for some, cannot afford the help. It is not just about being able to utilize an effective communication in the learning condition that is at stake, a child’s self-confidence and sense of self in society will be sabotaged. The child will face difficulties in making friends, as they may not be able to communicate in that child’s language, therefore eventually causing the child to go for play therapy. Furthermore, teachers end up getting frustrated as they are not able to enhance a child’s knowledge and improve them socially due to the fact that the child is incapable of understanding what is being said to
Although babies are born without language, they learn to communicate by listening to the world around them. Language is crucial for the development of a child. By the time the child is school age he or she should have amassed some sort of vocabulary without any instructional lessons. Children pick up grammar, language, and meaning from the people around them. No one should be denied a language. We use language to express our feelings, state our needs and say what’s on our minds. Without language it would be like we are in a prison in our own heads with no means on how to communicate with other people. This can lead to frustration, resentment, and uncontrolled behaviors.

Children are better learners than adults except in the area of the pronunciation of words. That is why the second language program will be accepting children who are in elementary, they will be taught how to read signs, and learn how to speak in the desired second language. The objective goal of the second language program is to get students ready to speak another language as if it were their primary language. The second language program will not be as any other school program because it will require dedication, responsibility, and focus. Kids now are lazy and also don’t communicate well with other people, which is important because they will need to know how to communicate when they graduate high school, but because they were not taught how to they are lacking that skill. Students because they are being taught out the book they don’t get to learn different skills that will be useful when they leave high school. In the program students won’t be learning straight off the book they will be assigned a pen pal who they will be writing to not in English but in their chosen second language, and every so often they will talk on Skype this will show if they are understanding the language; with the interaction that the students will be doing they will develop communicative skills that will be helpful when they are out of high
However it is best to first establish how sociology is misused when not imposed correctly. Berger criticizes the ordinary citizen who attempts to understand sociology by confusing it with fields of work that it can apply to. “Sociology is not a practice but an attempt to understand“; Berger elaborates this point by explaining why society must use the sociological perspective to correctly use their sociological knowledge. If we are to practice sociology we must be able to envision how individual lives affect the world as a whole and vice versa. Anthony Giddens has described the individual who can embrace the sociological imagination as one who is able to “pull themselves away from the situation and to be able to think from an alternative point of view”. This is a barrier that all schools need to address for pupils as most children who come from a family with EAL are not getting the English education they need at home either. Within secondary school education there are also many barriers to learning for pupils as there is a lot more pressure socially at secondary schools; such as peer pressure as the pupils are trying to find their place socially and they desire to fit in with their peers. Those in secondary can also face the most challenging task of becoming a parent early which significantly impacts on a pupils learning; as the expectant parent would have to take time out from their education and in some cases never return. Post-Compulsory education also has many barrier to learning as a mature student may not have the confidence to return to education; and have the emotional barriers of a family to consider when rethinking of entering education.
After reviewing the article titles given for this first assignment, I believe they indicate that Sociology, generally speaking, is not only a study of diversity or commonality in traits among people; it is also a science about factors in a person’s life and how these factors culminate responses. Interestingly enough, its topics of concern seem to be directly determined by current and common events of the world. Through the invention and expansion of new ideas, popular trends and fashions through time, Sociology adapts to responsibly to service the very subjects of interest it studies; for, even the slightest change of a person’s daily experience can have an insurmountable impact on attitude, personal growth, family dynamics and basic group behavior.

Sociological imagination is an ability to look at things socially and how they interact and influence each other gaining an understanding of different cultures and class systems.
