Charles Darwin is well-known for his groundbreaking work on evolutionary biology. Among his many contributions, The Origin of Species is the most associated with his name. He introduces the scientific theory of evolution and suggests that species have evolved over a period of many generations through a process called natural selection. Darwin's theories have created much controversy among his colleagues and led to great amounts of debate. However, the massive amount of criticism directed at Darwin convinced him to make to revisions. As a result, his future editions would differ considerably from the earlier versions and he also responds to some of the issues people had with his theory in the later versions. Unfortunately, his adjustments had somewhat obscured his original argument, which is the reason of his first edition being the best representation of Darwin’s ideas. Charles Darwin begins Origin of Species by explaining his theory of natural selection. He claims that the breeders of animals and plants have had a profound impact with the changes they created among domesticated species. Darwin used the common practice of breeding animals as a way to introduce artificial selection in order to help the readers of 1859 understand the possibility of nature also being capable of producing similar changes through the same selective process. Darwin is firm that his theory of variation and inheritance plays a vital role in human reproduction. However, these kinds of ideas were treated as absurd as there was no direct evidence at the time that supported the belief of genetics. Another issue that is related to fossils was born after the sudden discovery of a whole group of living things at a certain point in the fossil records. The best example of this occurring was with the discovery of all the basic modern types that originated from the Cambrian era. Darwin tries to argue that the imperfections of the records include these fossils. Although he had plenty of hypotheses for this, he had no evidence to back it up.
In Charles Darwin’s life he had helped make a significant advancement in the way mankind viewed the world. With his observations, he played a part in shifting the model of evolution into his peers’ minds. Charles Darwin, the Father of Evolution, was a British scientist who laid the foundations of the theory of evolution, transforming the thinking of the entire world about the living things around us (Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882)). After working on his theory for nearly 20 years, he published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. As soon as the book was released, the controversy began with each sides gaining followers until the climax on July 10, 1925. The idea that animals could “evolve” and change into new species, including humans, was one that challenged not only how people thought about the natural world, but challenged the story of the creation from the Bible itself. Even though Darwin himself never said that humans “evolved” from apes, everyone took it as a logical extension of his new theory. It went against the idea of argument for design that had unified theology and science for decades (Moran 5). This new threat to Christianity and the social culture of the time was one that would transform state laws on their educational curriculum.
Darwin did not come up with his theory out of nowhere. Like anyone else who has made discoveries, he was influenced by others. For quite a long time before Darwin, people didn't look beyond the Biblical creation story. Such things as fossils, primitive stone tools and visible layers of rock were said to have been placed on earth by God. There wasn't a great deal of work done on what we now call evolution, until the age of exploration began.
At Christ’s College, Darwin had a professor named John Stevens Henslow who in time became his mentor. After Darwin graduated Christ’s College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1831, Henslow recommended him for a naturalist’s position aboard the HMS Beagle.The HMS Beagle was a ship that was to take a five year long trip around the world. Charles Darwin took the opportunity knowing that the up close experience with collecting natural specimen would teach and interest him greatly. Darwin uncovered many unknown thoughts about the specimens he discovered during his journey (Price, 2006). 2.) When Darwin was developing his theories on evolution, he was afaid to publish his findings due to the christian beliefs that were widely accepted at the time. Religious knowledge would have it that god created all species, and therefore since the creation no new species could have come into existence. Through science we have discovered evolution, variation and extinction. These beliefs obviously contradict one another, and often they confuse us. There are some similarities in these beliefs though, christian belief in the “Great chain of being” resemble the invention of Linnaus, the taxonomic system.
I shall begin by telling you what I believe. I do not think that the fossil record is of any help to evolution. I trust that the fossil record is, in fact, the greatest evidence against the evolutionary train of view.
The arguments that many Young Earth Creationists make for their belief and against evolution are that fossils were created through the great Flood, the literal belief in Genesis, and that radiocarbon dating used in Evolution is too imprecise to prove that the Earth is older than 10,000 years.

Although Darwin is the most famous exponent of this theory, he was by no means the first person to suspect the workings of evolution. In fact, Charles owed a considerable debt to his grandfather Erasmus, a leading scientist and intellectual, who published a paper in 1794, calledZoonomia, or, The Laws of Organic Life. Anyone with even a moderate background in science has heard of Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Our psychological characteristics today are those that promoted reproductive success in the ancestral environment.” Evolution was first introduced by a naturalist by the name of Charles Darwin. Darwin had written an autobiography, at the age of 50, On the Origin of Species (1859) explaining how species evolve through time by natural selection; this theory became known as Darwinism. “Verlyn Klinkenborg, who writes editorials and vignettes on science and nature for the “New York Times”” (Muller 706) questions Darwin’s theory in one of his essays he wrote called Darwin at 200: The Ongoing Force of His Unconventional Idea. Both articles talk about the theory of Darwinism, but the authors’ use different writing techniques and were written in different time periods. Darwin himself writes to inform us on what the theory is, where as Klinkenborg goes on to explain why Darwinism is just a theory. Today, evolution is still a very controversial topic among many. It comes up in several topics that are discussed everyday such as in politics, religion and education.

Charles Darwin has had the greatest influence on the world by proving the evolution of living things. Charles Darwin had first noticed the similarities of plants and animals when he took a five-year cruise on the H.M.S. Beagle, which was available to him through a friend from school. During the cruise Charles Darwin started becoming interested with the similarities between the plants and animals that were similar on different islands with similar climates, so he decided to study them more closely.
Popularly referred to as the father of evolution, Charles Darwin was the fifth child of Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgewood born the same year and day as Abraham Lincoln- a historical icon, February 12, 1809. He had four sisters, three older than him and one younger while his brother was older than he was and they belonged to a privileged, wealthy and well-known family. He held his father, Robert Waring Darwin, in high regard and he was a renowned physician with connections among the local gentry and new industrialists. Notably also, his grandfather- Erasmus Darwin, was a physician and poet with a liking to natural philosophy where his patients were from affluent backgrounds one of them being Josiah Wedgewood. Erasmus Darwin put forward a natural explanation for the origin and development of life where in his book Zoonomia, published in 1974, he looked into the domestication of animals, cross-fertilization of plants along with movement of climbing plants. Various works of his discussed the mechanism of inheritance and made observations on sexual selection. It is important to acknowledge the intellectual atmosphere that Charles and his father grew up in (Berra, 2009).
