Teaching yourself means being willing to go above and beyond to learn thoroughly, sometimes by using outside sources. The book The Art of Racing in the Rain, authored by Garth Stein, altered my view on the humanities.
This work documented the human experience in a light that I would not have seen it had I only read the books assigned to me in class. The themes in this book and how they were portrayed helped me to be able learn symbolism a bit better and also to understand my own life more clearly.

When Denny’s late wife Eve dies, his whole world is changed. Trish and Maxwell - the evil Twins - plot against Denny by pulling him into a major court battle. As a result, Denny is forced to sacrifice major opportunities in order to win custody of his daughter, Zoë. “ “I appreciate your generous offer,” he [Denny] said. “But I’m afraid certain things prevent me from leaving this country – or even this state – at the moment. So I have to decline.” (Stein 276) Luca Pantoni – a man that worked at Ferrari – asked Denny if he wanted to move out to Italy with his family where he could test cars for a living. With the major court battle going on Denny had to politely refuse the offer. Knowing Denny’s personality it would have been difficult for him to decline such a great offer, but at that moment he had to think about his family first. Next to Eve, Zoë is the most important person in Denny’s life. The death of Eve was unexpected for both Denny and Zoë, but Denny could not let his sadness and frustration show...
Enzo’s beloved owner, Denny, is a very talented racecar driver and works at a high-end car garage. Halfway through Enzo’s life, Denny marries a woman named Eve. Denny and Eve have a child named Zoe. Just when life seems to be perfect, Enzo senses that there is something wrong with Eve. As it turns out, she has brain cancer. After six months, Eve passes away.
When having an education, people grow and expand their knowledge. By expanding and gaining knowledge from the experience of college, people are able to become independent learners. However, most people tend to start evolving into independent learners after leaving high school; from leaving high school, I started to evolve into an independent learner. Setting goals for yourself creates individual growth. In the article, “Why we are looking at the ‘value’ of college all wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Nelson discusses how an independent learner is able to teach themselves and learn from the challenges they tend to face.

...its shows how for hundreds of years man has been faced with the same dilemma of dealing with the truth in reality. Man’s manufactured society has changed, but there have always been people craving the truth and wanting to show others the truth of reality. It is amazing to think that people ignore the truth because they don’t want to know how short life is, but it’s so cool to think that when a person steps back they can see that the same fear has spanned hundreds of years. People accept what they want and reject what they don’t like, and people’s ignorance has caused them to fail to realize that they are no different then people 1000 years ago. It is so amazing that one story can still be TRUE thousands of years later, but it makes sense because people will always find the truth to be the unsettling reality that forces people to be aware of their place in society.
As we pull into the racetrack I look around. There are a ton of trailers which means a ton of cars, which also means a ton of people. Aside from all the diversity we all love the same thing, racing. Why are the characters in this literary work good symbols for the problem or ill?
I believe a lot of people have a pet dog, and most of the time people are wondering what they are thinking. The art of racing in the rain will be a really good choice for them, it is a fiction written by Garth Stein. Throughout the book, the author used an Irish terrier as the main character who talks about his life experience through the whole book. The dog’s name is Enzo, Denny is his master, who is another main character in the book, he works in an auto shop, but he really wants to be a professional racecar driver. Denny has a wife named Eve and Daughter Zoe, Enzo and Denny have overcome a lot of challenges together, which made Enzo a really special dog for Denny because he could understand Denny.
This book is a very interesting read, if you have some self discipline. I mean that you need some self discipline because this book didn’t really captivate me in the sense that I couldn’t put it down. But after reading it for a while, I started to appreciate the author’s way of describing the characters and actions in this book.

As the first poem in the book it sums up the primary focus of the works in its exploration of loss, grieving, and recovery. The questions posed about the nature of God become recurring themes in the following sections, especially One and Four. The symbolism includes the image of earthly possessions sprawled out like gangly dolls, a reference possibly meant to bring about a sense of nostalgia which this poem does quite well. It was first presented to me in my U.S. history class, on a rare day when the class did not proceed in the format of a lecture. After a few short minutes of gazing at it, I became captivated by it. It animated for me vividly and personally the infamous struggle for dignity, that colorful and multi-dimensional historical narrative that I had only ever heard about from the black and white pages of textbooks and from evocative but still somehow one dimensional lectures of my teachers. It spoke in immediate and tangible terms about the Harlem renaissance the way Dorothy Lange’s iconic photograph of a migrant mother speaks about the utter unfairness of depression era poverty, expressionist paintings speak about the psychological horrors of industrialism. I was both inspired and refreshed by what this short book had to offer. Even though the words and text could have easily been read to a third grader, the themes and situations are truly timeless and universal. The way these complex emotions and were conveyed in a simple manner, made it even more enjoyable to read.
Self-directed learning is one of those amorphous terms that occur in adult education literature but that lacks precise definition, it is so broad as to be almost meaningless. (Jarvis, 1992).
