Functionalism and Pragmatism
Introduction
As a society, it is important to learn and understand the world and ourselves. The extent of progress from great philosophers truly is not fully acknowledge and recognized by the general population. Study of philosophy and sociology focus our past existence, as well as the future. Philosopher’s theories are very complex, with many different views. My focus is to examine the differences.
What is Functionalism?
Functionalism originated in the United States in philosophy and developed from the philosophy of pragmatism. Functionalism of psychology theories analyze the minds mental state and the behaviors that are produced from the environment. The theory looks at a person’s environment that they live in as the reason for their problems. Functionalism changed from studying the how the mind process internally. Functionalists focused on the process of mind activity thinking and observable behaviors it produce.

Psychology can be broadly defined as the scientific and systematic study of people’s behavior and mental processes.
Darwin has two theories on the key principles of theory of evolution. One is the natural selection, a species that attains characteristics that are adapted to their environments (Darwin, Charles). The other one is survival of the fittest, which is when an individual best adapts to their environment survive to reproduce, and their genes are passed to later generat...

Functionalism is basically a theory that describes the mental state of human beings through the combination of both behaviorism theory and the identity theory of the human mind. According to this theory, mental states of people are majorly identified or rather defined by what they frequently do and
Psychology is a multifaceted science that embraces both conscious and unconscious parts of the human mind that includes a lot of sub-fields, such as human development, sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes. Throughout the years, there have developed many theoretical approaches in order to categorise these fields, and create a structured field of research for psychology. Some of these approaches include behaviourism, psychoanalysis, cognitive and humanism. Although these approaches are the dominant viewpoints in psychology and have been praised for their main concepts and ideas, they have been met with various criticisms over the years.
Functionalism is the oldest and most commonly used theoretical approach used to understand social issues. Functionalism is a macrosociological perspective that presents the idea that society consists of different components working together to help a society function as one. Sociolog...
Charles Darwin has five parts to his theory of natural selection, firstly the “Geometric increase” which claims that “all living things reproduce in great numbers”, meaning that species may survive but not all will survive because, the resources used for survival for instance ,food will not be enough for all living things. “The struggle for existence” because there is a limited number of resources and can only sustain some and not all, not all living things will survive, however the question lies in which living being will survive?. “Variation” is the third part of natural selection which claims that within those living things there are variations within them that will determine whic...
Psychology is a social science that aims to study the mind and the behaviors of humans. It aims to understand what drives humans to act the way they do. It differs from sociology and anthropology in that it takes accounts the individual rather than society as a whole.
In this essay I am looking at where Psychology as a discipline has come from and what affects these early ideas have had on psychology today, Psychology as a whole has stemmed from a number of different areas of study from Physics to Biology,
Psychology is the scientific study on how people think, behave and feel. It is the study of the human mind, and its functions affecting behavior in a certain condition. To me, the word psychology means the study of people’s mind and how it works. Psychology often includes emotional characteristics of people as well. The characteristics help determine why people behave and respond they way they do.
There are many criticisms of functionalism and their theories: Ø Functionalist ideas almost portray humans as being autonomous and that only socialisation determines our lives. They do not really see humans as the unpredictable creatures they are, not possible to stray away from the predictable ideas that functionalists have of people. Too much stress is placed on harmony and the potential for conflict and its affects are generally ignored. Ø There is no recognition of difference by class, region or ethnic group. The functionalist picture is simply reflective of happy middle-class American families.
Functionalism arose from structuralism where it studies the function of conscious mind rather than the structure and it was focused on how our minds adapt to the changing environment. James prospected the mental activities as having developed through ages of evoluti...
The research reveals the following comparisons and contrasts of August Comte and Herbert Spencer. Auguste Comte was born in the shadow of the French Revolution in 1798, as both technology and science was on the precipice of the Industrial Revolution. The world he was born into was experiencing great conflict, and people’s beliefs in prior institutions were being smashed. His focus was on a new social order and he focused on the study of this new society as opposed to the past belief in monarchism or religion. In fact, it is his work that coined the term “sociology”. August Comte believed that it was only through the methodology of observation, which could be measured and tested, that this new science of sociology would be validated. His belief is that the any study of sociology should be science-based. He was a critic of the Enlightenment, feeling its philosophy was destructive. In his book System of Positive Polity, he emphasized morality and humanity as cornerstones of political organizations in which society participated. His was a new world order and he attempted to use a scientific understanding to bring together history, psychology and economics. Above all, Comte was devoted to the idea of serving for the betterment of society. It's his belief that true knowledge is only found through science.
