The Cases Against Slavery

The two addresses by Abraham Lincoln “Address at the Dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery” and “Second Inaugural address” reflect the issues with slavery. The story, as framed by Abraham Lincoln, tells how colored soldiers and non colored soldiers have come together to fight the civil war to abolish slavery and preserve their rights their fore fathers have set up for them and how slavery goes against being a Christian. While the story line follows that of Harriet Beecher Stowe in her book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, where through a series of sketches she tells the stories of the human cruelty of slavery and enlightens the reader on how being a Christian and being for slavery is wrong. These stories enlighten us on the Civil War and one of the main causes of the Civil War which is slavery. Although there were many reasons to be against slavery the main cases against slavery was the Fugitive Act of 1850, religion, human cruelty, separation of families, and the compromise of land between Free states and slave states.

The Fugitive Act of 1850 “held individuals responsible for harboring fugitive slaves even if they were located in non-slave states. This Act was particularly hated by abolitionists and stoked the fire of the Underground Railroad” (American history.com). Many abolitionists such as Harriet Beecher Stowe felt as if the passing of this particular Act made them subjects of slavery in which they didn’t want any part of. Harriet Beecher Stowe states in Uncle Cabin “I know the way of all of ‘em, –they makes tracks for the underground” She is stating how the slaves run away from the masters through the underground railroad which was created by abolitionist against the Fugitive Act of 1850 to help slaves escape to Canada th...

...a and Kansas Act was passed it was passed to present a compromise and reduce the tension of slavery, but it had the opposite effect. Which lead to the argument of free and slave states which in conflict lead to the Civil War. “Abraham Lincoln states in Second Inaugural Address that “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth” (Abraham Lincoln p.1705). By stating this Abraham Lincoln is stating that all states should be free to protect the nation.

In conclusion there were many cases against slavery but only five stood out more than any which were the Fugitive Act of 1850, religion, human cruelty, separation of families, and the compromise of land between Free states and slave states which all lead to the Civil War and the result of the Civil War.
