Introduction
In recent years, many corporations have noticed the importance of the environmental responsibility apart from gaining the profit. Quazi et al. (2001) list out some points the corporations would tend to adopt Environmental Management System such as the concern on the board management, saving the cost, attaining the international environmental fulfillment, meeting customer expectations, etc. Therefore, they would invest a portion of resources to manage and improve the environmental performance with different methods. In aviation industry, aircrafts serve as a significant source in producing the greenhouse gases. Some findings point out the aviationindustry produces around 2% of the global emission recently. In the fast growing society, the people tend to be wealthier and have more opportunities to travel around, therefore the emission of the greenhouse gases from aviation would increase rapidly. The IPCC has also predicted that until 2050, global emission could rise to 3%. In some countries, the government would assist on reducing the aviation gas emission. For example, the British government provides around five million pounds to set up the technical strategies to reduce the aviation environmental externalities (Chen, 2010). In this essay, I am going to take Cathay Pacific Airways Limited to analyze and appraise its implementation on the environmental management system.

The airline industry has long attempted to segment the air travel market in order to effectively target its constituents. The classic airline model consists of First Class, Business Class and Economy, and the demographics that make up the classes have both similarities and differences to the other classes. For instance there may be similarities between business class travellers on a particular flight, but they will not all be travelling for the same reason. An almost-universal characteristic of air travel is that customers do not fly for the sake of flying; the destination is the important element and the travel is a by-product, a means-to-an-end that involves the necessity of an aircraft that gets the customer from point A to point B. Because the reasons can differ greatly in the motivations for a customer wanting to fly, it can be difficult to divide the market into discrete segments, that is, there is always going to be overlap in the preferences and characteristics of any given segment. With that in mind, the commonalities that are shared between the clientele that make up the respective classes can easily withstand analysis.
The Airline Industry is a fascinating market. It has been one of the few industries to reach astounding milestones. For example, over 200 airlines have gone out of business since deregulation occurred in 1978. Currently, more than 50% of the airlines in the industry are operating under Chapter 11 regulations. Since 9/11, four of the six large carriers have filed for and are currently under bankruptcy court protection. Since 9/11 the industry has lost over $30 billion dollars, and this loss continues to increase. Despite the fact that the airline industry is in a state of despair, JetBlue has become the golden example, a glimpse of what the industry could be.
As airline industry is a competitive marketplace, the airline companies use new technologies to improve their efficiency and decrease the overhead costs, including ‘advanced aircraft engine technology, IT solutions, and mobile technology’ (Cederholm 2014). The technology changes including technology improvement, new innovation and disruptive technology. The disruptive technology need to meet the characteristics of ‘simplicity, convenience, accessibility and affordability’ (Christensen 1995). The technology changes would bring both opportunities and threats to airline companies. Since Labour cost and fuel costs occupy 50% of most airlines operating cost (Groot 2014). This case focuses on corporate obstacles to pollution prevention. Pollution prevention can complex especially for large corporations. There are many different forms of pollution prevention including emissions control devices and incremental changes in existing technology. The author reviews the impact of emissions controlled devices, however the focus of the case study is on incremental changes in existing technology. Incremental changes include substituting one or two steps in a production process or relationship changes between production steps. One example of incremental changes that was provided by the author was eliminating chlorofluorocarbons and saving energy by replacing a refrigeration process with a heath exchanger that can exploit waste cooling from another part of the process. There are three critical decision-making stages for incremental changes; identifying a pollution prevention opportunity, finding a solution appropriate to that opportunity, and implementing that solution. The author discusses the three aspects of an organization (culture, ability to process information, and its politics) and how they impact the decision-making stages.
Southwest Airlines is one of the most successful airlines in the United States. There has never been layoffs or strikes in the history of the company, although there were several times when layoffs could have been justified, including the months following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Some of the major sources that attributed to environmental impact were the use of chemicals and water-intensive processes. IBM focused on a means to more efficiently manage these processes, from storage, use and disposal. Furthermore, they went on to create more eco-friendly products that could be recycled. The EMS policy focuses on employee well-being as well as resource conservation and creating products that have less of an impact on the environment. These responsibilities and expectations are seen on a company wide spectrum, where IBM employees have a commitment to environmental leadership. Training is provided to all employees, who are consistently being updated and certifying their compliance with IBM’s expectations.

There is no universal standard for green hotels, neither is an offical definition of a green hotel. The airline industry is the highest competitive industry, and I believe a sustainable completive advantage is essential to succeed in the future of the aviation industry. The competitive advantages that an airline embrace, needs to be based on the airlines strategy and differentiation to competitors. Emirates displays how it has a strategy and how the airline gets ahead of its competitors through how unique it is.
In recent decades, air pollution has increasingly become a problem in modern cities. Air pollution is any type of gas released in big enough quantities that it becomes detrimental to human health. In the People’s Republic of China it has become one of the leading causes of death. High-levels of particulates and sulfur dioxide are recorded in many Chinese cities. These cities are often regarded as the most polluted in the world. Much of this pollution is generated by power plants and automobiles unregulated by the post-1978 reform era.
