I am planning to open a sporting good store. There are certain things I need to do in order to properly plan, organize, direct, and control this store. I would also need differing levels of management and decide on a management style that works best for both my store and me. In this paper I would develop a plan that will cover all these things so that I may open a successful business.
I would begin the planning process by determining what recreational activities are available in the particular geographical location. I live in Alexandria, Louisiana, so this is where I would probably open my store. In this area there are numerous places to hunt and fish so I would need to cover these areas really well. There are also two bowling alleys so I would carry items such as shoes, balls, gloves, and towels. I bowled on a league here and found that no one, not even Wal-Mart, carried any of these items. I would also be sure to carry licensed items from all the local teams such as the New Orleans Saints. I would also carry items from each of the high schools in my parish so that I could cater to the younger generation in my parish. To achieve these goals, I would obtain permission from the high schools and sports associations to sell their products. I would attempt to develop partnerships with various organizations such as Bass Pro Shops, Brunswick, and the National Football League, so that I could develop my inventory and obtain officially licensed products. I would also develop a strategy for operations. I would determine what are the best hours of operation. I would invite people to request certain items or to give suggestions on how to better meet their needs and serve them the best I can.

As I have explained, there are many different types of management roles and levels in businesses. It is up to the business owner to figure out which is right for his or her business. There are also many different phases to properly running that business. One of the main reasons businesses fail is because of a lack of planning (Gaebler Ventures, 2007). My advice to anyone wanting to open a business, based on my research, is plan, plan, and plan.

If I were to start my own business, my dream would be to build a surf and skate shop on the Southern California coast. My business would be located on beachfront property in the surrounding area. This business plan will cover two main subjects, 1: an Analysis of the Business Situation, and 2: the Planned Operation of the proposed business. The first topic will cover the subtopics Trading Area Analysis and Competition in the area for my business. The second main topic will cover the proposed organization of the business, the proposed business, and proposed strategies for that business. The analysis of the business situation will cover geographic and demographic information for Huntington and the surrounding area. It will also contain an analysis of businesses in the area which are of similar type, customer buying behavior relating to my proposed business, and the potential location of my business. The Proposed Operation section will address the topics of ownership, start-up procedure, personnel needs, special functions, and an organizational chart. Details of products which will be sold will also be included, as will my business' pricing policy. I would hope that through my thorough planning and explanation that my business idea will be a grand success on the beautiful beaches of California.

The first function of management is planning. "Planning is systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or overall organization will pursue." (Bateman & Snell) In my organization, planning takes up the most time. Objectives must be laid out, potential products must be examined and the timing and type of marketing must all be planned out before we provide our product to our customers. This function should be first and foremost to all individuals involved in the organization. Poor planning will result in your organizations demise.
Management by definition is generic in scope and can have varying meaning to a small company infrastructure versus a large company’s. Management structures can be in-depth in a large company and superficial in a smaller organization yet; both can be equally successful. What connects management on every level is the need for creative problem-solving. This function is essential to the overall success of any size company. The use of management assets defines the company mission and carries out objectives. Creative problem-solving is consummated in the course of four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

When it comes to business, especially when it comes to starting one, I tend to think I know it all. Yet in reality, I don't really even know how to get started, enough to make a business efficient, or even get the doors open enough to make the first dollar. When I first think of working/operating a business, I think of no boss but myself, the rules are made by me and no one else, and that seems like a great plan in my eyes. As well as having all company profit coming directly to me, and I get to decide what happens with it. Although I know there is more to it than that, there is forming a budget, working with customers, knowing when to expand, and when to coast through. I also know that in the world of business, that if you aren't moving ahead, you are moving backwards.
