The most common purpose for (BI) systems is to aid in the decision making process. BI systems collect data, store the gathered information in data warehouses, analyze the data and then present the data in easy to understand applications for the decision making process. The following studies research the role that BI systems play in the decision making process. The Role of BI in Decision Making Overview. Isik, Jones, and Sidorova (2013) conducted a study that explored the following research questions “(1) What is the relationship between various BI capabilities and BI success? and (2) What is the influence of the decision environment on the relationship between BI capabilities and BI success?” (p. 13, para. 4). The research model used explored the relationships between BI success, technological BI capabilities (data quality, integration with other systems, user access), organizational BI capabilities (flexibility, risk management support), and decision environment (decision types, information processing needs) (Isik et al., 2013, p. 17). Methodology. The study completed by Isik et al. (2013) was started with a four part survey that included participant demographic information, measurements of BI success, measurements of BI capabilities, and measurements of decision environments. The survey was analyzed by academic experts and adjusted according to their suggestions. A pilot study was then conducted using 24 BI professionals and the results suggested that the survey required no further changes. The final survey was sent to over 3000 mangers that utilized BI systems in their businesses. Of those surveys only 92 were returned and useable for data collection. Information systems (IS) can either enable or hinder business growth, so organizations must learn to use IS advantageously. The case study “Building Business Agility at Southwest Airlines” by Ross and Beath (2007) demonstrates how a firm can drive business success through a revolutionary change in its use of IS. In the following case analysis, I will introduce and evaluate Southwest Airlines, describe and analyze its approach to IS as outlined in “Building Business Agility at Southwest Airlines,” and provide future recommendations for the company.

One of the biggest dilemmas in owning a store and providing a service in selling a product is figuring out how much of the item to get, if an owner gets too much of a product, the owner will lose money, if the owner does not get enough of a product, customers will shop somewhere else and the owner will not only lose the sale, but also potentially lose a customer who is willing to shop somewhere else to get the product they want. This past Christmas, I was shopping for the latest Frozen Movie Soundtrack for a gift. I had to go to three stores to find the CD to purchase. If the original stores that I went to had the product in stock, I most likely would have bought several more items.

The area of information system application chosen is the decision support system. A decision support system (DSS) is an information system designed to help leaders and team’s members to reach a decision when a decision-making situation arises (Haag, 2013). In the area of management that I have worked, I have experience a range of decision support systems that helps with a range of decisions depending on the tasks and missions.
First of all, business intelligence analysis requires the capturing of information and storing in a single location for effective data analysis. Currently, data analysis is supported by transactional systems, business specific data marts, and other ad-hoc processes. Information is distributed making it difficult and time-consuming to access. Business teams have adapted to this environment by creating user maintained databases and manual “work-arounds” to support new types of reporting and analysis. This has resulted in inconsistent data, redundant data storage, significant resource use for maintenance, and inefficient response to changing business needs.
Thinking critically and making decisions are important parts of today’s business environment. It is important to understand how the decision making process works and the steps involved. The nine steps of the decision making process are: identifying the problem, defining criteria, setting goals and objectives, evaluating the effect of the problem, identifying the causes of the problem, framing alternatives, evaluating impacts of the alternatives, making the decision, implementing the decision, and measuring the impacts. (Decision, 2007.) By using various methods and tools to assist in making important business decisions an individual can ensure the decisions they make will be as successful as possible. In this paper it will be examined how the decision making process can be followed using various tools and techniques to make successful business decisions by using these same tools and techniques during a thinking critically business scenario. The paper will also discuss how different tools and techniques could have been used to make different, yet still successful decisions.

Furthermore, in this article, Thomas Davenport discusses analytics from a business standpoint. He refers to organizations that have been successful in their usage of data and statistical analysis. In addition, he also discusses how data and statistics can be vital in the efforts to improve the operations of businesses.
Business intelligence, or BI, is an umbrella term that refers to a variety of software applications used to analyze an organization’s raw data. BI as a discipline is made up of several related activities, including data mining, online analytical processing, querying and reporting. Data mining is the process of sorting through large amounts of data and picking out relevant information. It is usually used by business intelligence organizations, and financial analysts, but is increasingly being used in the sciences to extract information from the enormous data sets generated by modern experimental and observational methods.
“Decision making is a process of first diverging to explore the possibilities and then converging on a solution(s). The Latin root of the word decision means "to cut off from all alternatives". This is what you should do when you decide.” (Kotelnikov, 2008). In fact, the decision making process helps reduce doubt and uncertainty about alternative choices to allow individual to choose the best reasonable choice. In addition, the decision making process can make the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful organization. Consequently, management tries to use the best techniques and tools possible to make the best decision. Nowadays, most organizations seem to think that they have the most effective and efficient decision making process. So what are the different styles of decision making processes have organizations implemented? In order to answer this question, the team members will investigate and observe the decision-making processes most prevalent in their organization. As a result, these papers will first compare and contrast the problem identification and formulation styles in the team members’ organizations. Then the most favorable aspects of each style will be discussed to describe a process by which a problem can be identified and described to stakeholders in a manner that is sensitive to their perspective.

Therefore, AIS has several roles. A main role is to integrate all information system for effective management within a company, connecting different departments with relevant information. Another role is to assist the organisation to make decisions by preparing different reports and evaluating information. It also provides a company with a control and safeguard internal information ((Kim and Solomon 2006).
