Human Nature and Lord of the Flies-I.S.U.
# 13) Bullies
Bullying is when a person or group frequently harms someone who is weaker or more vulnerable then themselves. They do this by means of physical, verbal, or mental abuse. Bullies can be male, female, young or old. The nature of a bully depends on many factors such as sex, age, and past experiences. Depending on the nature of the bully, their actions can have many negative effects on others. Bullies display many characteristics such as aggression, rivalry, and competitive behavior. Bullying occurs in many different places, a good example is in the novel The Lord of the Flies. Jack, the antagonist in this novel, displays many characteristics of a bully. Many children have been victimized by the terrible acts of bullies.
There are bullies everywhere you go some noticeable and others not at all, you may not recognize a bully because they come in many different forms. The abusiveness of bullies’ is usually deliberate and not accidental. There are bullies at work, online, in the public and mostly school. So who is a bully? A bully is a person that causes emotional, psychological, or physical harm by using two different types of attacks. The first type being direct attacks, this consists of threatening, teasing, taunting, name calling, stealing, damaging of belongings, and hitting. Studies say that this type of attack is more common between males. “While both boys and girls say others bully them by making fun of the way they look or talk, boys are more likely to report being hit, slapped, or pushed”( Nansel, Overpeck, Pilla, Ruan, Simons-Morton, Scheidt 2001). The other type of attacks are indirect, they are spreading of rumors and encouraging others to reject someone else. Studies say that this type of attack is more common between females. “Teenage girls are more often the targets of rumors and sexual comments” ( Nansel, Overpeck, Pilla, Ruan, Simons-Morton, Scheidt 2001). Bullies usually target people who are different, it may be physical differences or even intelligence, and also they tend to target people who won’t retaliate back. They usually harass the person by attacking at there differences and imperfections. So a bully is someone who causes harm to others over and over again.
Bullying has many negative effects on many people such as the victim, the bully himself, and society. Studies show these effects may turn out to be short-term or long-term.
Bullying: What is it? For some it’s when one person makes fun of another, but for others it’s more extreme. Bullying has been prevalent throughout history. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of young boys crash into a secluded island. These disciplined, well mannered, British boys exhibit various acts of bullying on the island. There are many psychological, emotional, and physical aspects of bullying. Both the victims and the bully have a certain mentality that constitutes them. The premise of the mentality of the bully and the victim are apparent and well portrayed in William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies.
Bullies often have an agenda that leads them to bully. A bully tries to “shame and intimidate their victims and make them feel inadequate” (Rosenthal 16). The reasoning behind this is that children often learn their habits from parents if they use aggressive language or have an aggressive behavior. Often children do not have a mother or father figure to guide them or teach them how to behave properly and this affects them in the long run. More bullies than non-bullies live without two biological parents; some live with extended family or foster families. Many do not receive a lot attention at home causing anger in some children. Some kids live in bad areas and are used to violence around them and use this against other children, leading to guns in school. Bullies often deliberately go out of their way to put others down and usually to make themselves feel better for not getting what they want at home. Sometimes it’s the complete opposite, and children get whatever they want from their parents and they feel that they can make fun of others inferior to them. Just like popular girls or boys that feel it is ok to make fun of students that aren’t popular. Many bullies were once a victim either at home from family, or at school from other classmates. The ...
We tend to make fun of each other on a daily basis. You may even have a specific friend who you always tease more than others. But if it begins to constantly hurt their feelings, then the situation can become an act of bullying. Bullying is the act of physical, mental, or verbal abuse on a person for one's self-pleasure. It's very common for one to be unaware that they're a bully because their actions are unintended to hurt someone. But if the bullying hurts a person's feelings and repeats over and over again, then that counts as bullying, too. Bullying can happen to anyone at any time. In fact, bullying happens every 7 minutes worldwide. Children and even adults are frightened to leave their homes because they are severely bullied. There are

Six million boys and four million girls are involved in fights from being bullied or bullying others (Garrett 33). Also, there is an estimate that over five hundred and twenty-five thousand people are bullies in America (Garrett 35). “Freshman, particularly are the victims of bullies in high school, especially if they are small and smart” (Garrett 31-32). Many people are bullied because of the way they look, or the way they act.“ Children from violent homes are three or four times more likely to become a bully” (Garrett 30). Some bullies may make fun of people because they were made fun of, beaten, or unwanted as they grew up. Most children become bullies to gain power (Verial). Bullies do what they do so they “feel competent, successful, to control someone else, to get some relief from their own feelings of powerlessness” (Garrett 72).When children grow up they may become bullies, because of the abusive environment they were raised in by their parents.

Bullying can take place when a target child exposed to social egression by some of his or her peers, who perceive hem or her in lower state. Aggression behaviors and bullying can be confused together as perceiving them as they are the same thing but they are not. Aggression behaviors and bullying can be confused together as perceived as they are the same thing. They are not the same think because psychologists explained that aggression behaviors are the aggressive actions that people express against each other for specific period of time. While bullying on the other hand, is continuous aggression against specific person in which, this person exposure to aggressiveness is not limited to a one time incident. ”( Marsh, H). Being a bully or a victim sometime is not exclusive to certain individuals or groups because sometimes individual play both roles. An individual can be a bully due to his or his past experience of being bullied. Contrary, a former bully can be a victim as a consequence of his or her past behavior.( Marsh,)
In the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, bullying is displayed greatly through the teenagers minds. Piggy is by far the most bullied though because of his characteristics. He is short, chubby, wears glasses and by context a “nerd.” Jack takes any opportunity possible to bully him. Throughout the book the kids would get in arguments and find any way to make an insult towards the other person. Jack and Ralph were the most argumentative people because their ideas were always different towards the end of the book. Since Ralph was voted the leader of the group at the start of the book by his fellow classmates that also were stranded on the island, Jack has had a problem with him. Piggy helped Ralph come up with his ideas and make the

Bullying is when someone tries to hurt another person by hitting them or by simply hurting them with their words. Bullying is something that can have a huge impact on its victims. It might be something that lasts throughout their lives, or something that might cause them to take their lives. Bullies make small groups so that they can pick on other students who are small, fragile, and who can not defend themselves. Picking on someone should not be accepted because it can affect a person's well being in a drastic way. Bullying is believed to be a normal part of school life. However, when people begin to have that mentality they forget that bullying is psychologically and physically harmful to both the victim and the bully.
