1. Background
Nowadays, the insertion of character education into the education curriculum has become a hot issue. According to The Jakarta Post (22/05/09), character building has become a missing link in Indonesian curriculum. In which, it is stated that Indonesian curriculum which is focused on the students’ passing the National Examination has forgotten the core of education; that is to educate people into a physically, academically, and spiritually grown up. Ironically, Indonesia as a country that can create International Science Olympics gold-medalists is also the same country which ranks high among the most corrupt country in the world (Wisnu, 2009).
The concern towards the issues of character building, especially about building honesty is highly concerned by educators all over the world. Study about cheating in U.S. high school reveals a mind-blowing result where the “percentage of students admitting to cheating rises to 95%” during the past years (McCabe, 2011). Another issues from China stated that during 2008 to 2010 there is about 31 percent of papers submitted to the Journal of Zhejiang University–Science, an academic journal published by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, enclosed "copied material" without proper quotation; a survey from a plagiarism-screening service Cross Check (Shen, 2011).
To sum up, the insertion of character building, in this case, honesty is a crucial part in our education system. However, building honesty would better be taught at early ages as Piaget’s theory stated that starting from the age of seven children “have the ability to apply logical reasoning” (Pinter, 2006). This article points out the flaws in our modern education systems. Students should enjoy school and feel as though they are learning important things in the subjects offered. The classes can be altered to tend to the interests of children, so they can properly express themselves. School should be preparing children to be mature, how to handle hard situations, and ultimately prepare them for their future lives. In the contemporary world, characterized by democracy, educators have the role of not only passing necessary skills for employment purposes, but also teaching values that will enhance citizenship. In other words, educating the whole child entails passing instructions that enhances patriotism and good citizenship, leading to poverty eradication through development, instilling morals and values, while enhancing co-existence among people in the society. As illustrated by Noddings (2005), in the democratic society schools have the obligation of going beyond teaching fundamental skills if the endeavor of educating the whole child is to be met. Importantly, it is apparent that learning institutions are secondary agents of socialization where children learn important virtues and values that are essential in the society as they spend the most part of their childhood in school. In this regard, educating the whole child means transmitting values through extra-curriculum activities where both genders are integrated and also via clubs and societies where children are taught to be responsible. As well, the education curriculum should educate the whole child through transmitting of vital cultural values that enable them to avoid stereotypes when they grow into their adulthood (Lumpkin, 2008). According to statistics found in a survey conducted by the Free Press, 58% of high school students let someone copy their work in 1969, but by 1989 this number had risen to 97%. The expansion of the World Wide Web and the number of people accessing the Web on a regular basis has caused an epidemic of plagiarism in this country, especially among students.
