The BCS or bowl conference series is an arrangement that college football operates their match-ups with. The other setup fans have recommended is a playoff format. The BCS has an upper-hand over playoffs, because it has already being established. A playoff format is the setup that’s currently being run at the professional stage by basketball, football, hockey, football and soccer. At the collegiate level only football uses a BCS bowl game. Since its merger thirteen years ago, the BCS has had top 2 teams compete against each other 11 out of 13 times; the current streak is 7 years in a row, in which top two teams have met. The BCS would have had a flawless 13 out of 13, if the deciding factor was not based on teams past performances. The major problems with college football are: not gratifying uprising teams, not bearing in mind over achieving teams from weak conferences championship caliber, and being represented by a weak organization.
Sports with a playoff format have continually shown being ranked # 1 team means nothing come playoff time. Teams ranked # 1 get eliminated in the first round on regular basis, in a playoff format. For instance, the New England Patriots of the NFL posted a 16-o record and managed to lose in the first round. In a playoff format, upsets are bound to happen, unlike a BCS format. If a team can go through such adversity of having a target on their back then, they have clearly earned it. A playoff format gives unheard of teams to go under the radar. At the end of every tournament, the surprise factor is always there with a playoff format. The success rate of the previous bowl games usually determines the anticipation for the following year's tournament. With a BCS playoff format, supporters of top teams ...

...football should take is obvious. A playoff format seems to be the right choice from every aspect, except for the BCS’s point of view. College football hasn’t shown any truly legitimate signs of changing their mind. The fans not having a voice in college football's decision making is a disservice from them. College football at least owes the fans a reasonable explanation. College football’s management group has long lost the support of the fans, and this seems like the perfect opportunity to win them back. If money is the problem, Barack Obama and many wealthy playoff supporters like mark Cuban are ready to help out. The NFL uses its television partners to earn their money and that’s an option that college football can take. Given the fan’s luck of influence in college football’s decision making, all they can do is cross their fingers and hope for the best.
Each March, there arises some kind of brouhaha across the country or at least within the four walls of colleges across the United States. The cause is the highly regarded single-elimination tournament officially known as the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Championship, and colloquially as the March Madness. As described by Chris Suellentrop on the 6th Floor Blogs of the “New York Times” magazine, this “is the greatest sporting event of the year, and in particular, the tournament’s first weekend serves up the most entertaining four days in sports.” (Suellentrop 2011)
Your perspective may be in full agreement with any of the others, in partial agreement, or wholly different. Whatever the case, support your ideas with logical reasoning and detailed, persuasive examples. Every time the month of March rolls around, there is always some sense of hype in the air. That’s when the nation’s best college basketball teams compete against each other. It is as celebrated with each college being its own celebrity.
...of revenue, which is great for the small programs that are involved. With the CBS contact being $11 billion dollars, these teams can get a large sum of money. I think that this March madness tournament has nothing, but good to come from it.
Over the past 20 years, there has been a major increase in the popularity of college athletes. From 1989 to 2004, there was a 27% increase in ticket revenue (Brown). Despite the rigorous schedules the athletes had, they are still considered just a student. The NCAA cannot continue to allow these schools to work the athletes as much as they do without giving the athletes what they deserve. This is a horrible oppressive system that must be fixed.
Do you think picking your 4 favorite types candy is hard? Wouldn’t it be easier if you where able to chose your favorite 8 types of candy? Well right now it is like that with college football playoff system. During the BCS era they had one game between the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams and the winner would play the number 1 ranked team for the national championship. All the brad new FBS does is add one more game therefore only adding one more team, so instead of just adding one more team to the mix, this is still unfair. What they should add 5 teams to the 3 team mix to make the system fair. The recently removed BCS only allowed the top 3 teams to compete for a national championship but the new FBS is allowing 4 however, this is still a problem. These really affect small schools because “Undefeated mid-major schools and one-loss teams from major conferences still likely to miss the playoffs” (Douglas). The national championship is the championship of all college sports in every sport, and every year every college team in and a few out of the nation tries to compete for the national title. However some undefeated schools due to “easy schedules” do not get the same chance as one or two loss big schools that have slightly tougher schedules. In the NCAA basketball tournament “March Madness” over 60 teams get to play and compete for the national championship and they play multiple games every day so there should be no reason for football to not be able to have at least 8 teams instead of just 4. The NCAA college football playoffs should allow 8 teams to compete for the national championship instead of 4 because: It gives more teams a chance to compete, it makes more money for the schools, and it gets players more NFL attention and will get...
Fans have such a love for college football, completely different from NFL but paying athletes just like professional ones would change that different environment for both players and fans completely. Fans love the idea that they are watching these young men play with passion and love for the game. University alumni like to see these players have the same loyalty to the schools that they had when they attended. It resembles a big family, which is so different than a professional team that is technically playing simply for money for the organizations. Collegiate sports is not a career or profession. It is the students' vehicle to a higher education degree (Mitchell). Like many say, “you play for the name on the front, not the back.” It is a common argument that that professio...
There has been a lot of athletic scandals in colleges in most parts of the world. These scandals have been as a result of the coaches and the directors of athletics in the colleges failing to take the full force of the law and giving their players freedom to do everything even if it is against the law. One of this fatal scandals is the Baylor university basketball scandal that occurred in the year 2003. This scandal involved the players and the coaches of the team. The scandal left one player dead and the other imprisoned for thirty five years. The team was subjected to a lot of punishment by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The NCAA is a non-profit organization comprised of 1281 institutions, organizations, individuals and conferences and that organizes the athletic programs of most of the colleges and universities in the United States and Canada (The New York Times, 2003).
The debate on whether college athletes should be paid to play is a sensitive controversy, with strong support on both sides. College athletics have been around for a long time and always been worth a good amount of money. This billion dollar industry continues to grow in popularity and net worth, while they continue to see more and more money come in. The student-athletes who they are making the money off of see absolutely none of this income. It is time that the student-athletes start to see some of this income he or she may by helping bring the National Collegiate Athletic Association. There are many people who do not think this is in the best interest of the student-athletes or Universities, but that being said there are also many people who are in favor of the change.
College basketball is full of heart, hustle and the sheer will of wanting to win every single game while in the NBA a loss does not matter to the extent it does in college basketball. When it comes to playoffs in the NBA is nowhere close to as serious and fun to watch as March Madness. March Madness is either win or you die. While the NBA you have seven chances to win four games, with this you lose a certain degree of competition. If you have one chance one shot at winning the national championship the amount of heart and effort that individuals put into the game is so noticeable higher that it is hard to explain. With several March Madness game ending in low score margins that change every few seconds and often games ending with game winning three pointers or half court miracle tosses. When it comes to the comparison of NBA and College Basketball College wins without a
With the annual debate revived by fans and sportswriters, the involvement of the federal government, and the financial benefit that bowl games offer schools, the issue of wheatear to replace the Bowl Championship Series with a playoff system continues to be one of the most discussed aspects of college football. Most people agree the Bowl Championship Series should be replaced by a playoffs, however there are a few who believe otherwise. The Bowl Championship Series works, and college football has never been more successful, thrilling, popular, or more enjoyable than ever. The Bowl Championship Series is fairer, safer and more effective than a playoffs.
I believe that college sports should be considered a profession. Athletes deserve to be paid for their work. College athletics are a critical part of America’s culture and economy. At the present time, student-athletes are considered amateurs. College is a stepping-stone to the professional leagues. The NCAA is exploiting the student- athlete. Big-time schools are running a national entertainment business that controls the compensation rate of the players like a monopoly (Byers 1).
middle of paper ... ... However, if it wants to retain success in the future, it should allow players who wish to enter the NBA to further develop at the collegiate level. The NBA once understood the value of college basketball, and built off of it. March Madness is a goldmine with its high ratings, fan passion, and thrilling games.
The NCAA is a global, and well-known company that regulates collegiate sports with thousands of universities across the country. The NCAA organizational assessment shows its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats relative to all competitors. In this current market environment, I assessed and prioritize what strengths and weaknesses were most important and which strengths have to continue to grow and what weaknesses needed to be mitigated. It is tough for the NCAA to have great competition due to the fact that it is far beyond any competitions and doesn’t seem to show any sign of slowing down soon. Issues, whether political or ethical, or whatever the case may be, as long as the NCAA continues to analyze its “SWOT” then they will always be the leader in the current market
Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
...ecks and be treated as a farm system for the NFL, NBA, or MLB. If these athletes started getting paid now, at the college level, then the major leagues of these sports would suffer tremendously and lose marketability and money. A final solution to not having players get paid or receive certain benefits is maybe these head coaches of certain universities should not be getting the average 2 million dollars a year to be a coach, in some cases more than the presidents of these universities.(Chicago Tribune) There could be major strides made by simply merging that athletes shouldn’t get paid in whole dollars, but should receive paid benefits in which they would not have to worry about starving, losing scholarships due to injury or sub-par play. That I think would make the world for college athletes a better place, where both the schools benefit and the players benefit.
