Recommended: The Mongols major social impact on the world

Genghis Khan was a brilliant leader who made many positive contributions to Asia.
He unified the Mongolian clan, conquered and stabilized the Central Asian Plateau and instituted languages, laws, and reforms across Asia. However these contributions came with a heavy cost. Before Genghis Khan, the Central Asian Plateau was in disarray. Using his extraordinary skills in political manipulation and his powerful army, he quickly gained power. He believed that under his control, he could unite the Mongolian Clan and Conquer the Central Asian Plateau. He manipulated his allies and outfoxed his enemies with his large army. Within 20 years, he controlled a large part of the Central Asian Plateau. Not only did he achieve his dream of controlling the Central Asian Plateau, he contributed to the culture and economy as well. Although his legacy includes a swift and often brutal domination of much of Asia, this did not ultimately overshadow his many positive contributions.

When Genghis Khan was born in 1161, the Central Asian Plateau was full of nomadic hunters and herders belonging to scattered tribes with traditional economies. They had to grow their own food, make their own homes, and craft their own tools. The only trade that occurred was between clans united by an alliance. (Goldberg 23)

The rise of Genghis Khan began with a personal tragedy, when the Tatar Clan poisoned his father. In the Mongolian Tribes, family ties were essential. After his father’s death, with no more family ties to his tribe, the tribe deserted his family. After his brother died in a hunting accident, he became the leader of his family. For several years his family survived by hunting, gathering, and herding.
