Yoga has been around for centuries, but it has recently increased in popularity. Yoga originated in India and refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines. There are 5 major branches of yoga in the Hindu philosophy, they include: Raja yoga, Karma yoga, Jnana yoga, Bhakti yoga, and Hatha yoga (Yoga). Yoga goals vary and range from improving health to achieving Moksha (Yoga). “In the state of Moksha lies the ultimate peace, ultimate knowledge, and ultimate enlightenment. Paradise is believed to be a place of temporal attractions to be avoided by the seeker in order to pursue the ultimate goal of union/yoking with god through yoga.” (Moksha) After finding out a little more about yoga I began to wonder about it a little more. I want to know if yoga has any beneficial effects, for those in a regimented exercise program. So, I found a level one yoga class at my gym and thought I would try to find out if it was going to help or just waste my time because I am not into meditation.
It is Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, as I walk into the yoga studio armed with a bottle of water and my yoga mat, I’m not sure what to think. I follow what everyone else does. People are getting these foam blocks, blankets, and straps I am not sure what is going on at this point and the class has not even started yet. I ask what the three different things are for and the instructor Susan tells me, “The blocks are for balance if you need them, the blanket is for more knee support or padding if needed, and the strap will give an easier way to hold certain poses.”
The yoga mats are lined up on the left and right walls. As we begin, I am still not too sure about yoga. It is safe to say I am skeptical about how this is going to do anything ...

...oga is a good place to start because we are all fumbling to get into the poses and there was not one person that could hold a pose very long. It was nice to be in a room where it did not matter how bad you are because everyone is in the same boat. I really went to see what I would get out of yoga. In that one class I was sweating just as hard as I would during a regular workout. Not only was I stretching, but I was sore from working my muscles in a way they were not used to working. I am becoming a believer in yoga and its benefits for the mind, body, and soul.

Yoga is a discipline with a scientific background that was developed over 2000 years ago. In this system of self-development the restless mind is calmed and energy is placed into constructive channels. It is not a religion as some people may be led to believe. It is a philosophy of life. The lessons learned are just as relevant today as they were when they were first created, still keeping the main principle that before you can train your mind to reach a higher consciousness you must first discipline your body. Yoga's popularity is largely due to its wide range of benefits, including therapeutic effects, muscle toning, energy increasing and concentration of the mind.
This particularly yoga class was taught by a college student from State University named Kim. She stated that she is in training to become an official yoga instructor and that this class was the first one that she was teach at the Recreation Center. It is an exercise class that was intended to make your mind and body feel at peace as you stretch and do strength training. Yoga is meant to be very calming and spiritual. Everyone in the class appeared to be college student, there were mostly girls and few boys, only the instructor spoke during the class, and everyone made sure that they had their own personal space through the class to make sure they had enough room to move.
Yoga, as a way to achieve higher self-awareness, was around as early as 200 B.C. in India and has been gradually growing in popularity in the western world over the past four decades. Traditional styles of yoga, including Hatha yoga, which consists of thousands of poses, have long been studied as an effective form of complimentary or alternative medicine (CAM).
Yoga is a discipline both involving physical and mental control that originated in India. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word, "yug", meaning union and it means the joining of the individual spirit with the universal spirit. The type of yoga known as Hatha Yoga, ("Ha"- sun, "tha"-moon) is what is most commonly practiced and this yoga involves the path of the mind and body and is the most physical. There are eight limbs or steps of Hatha Yoga, the first step being the five Yamas. There are five yamas and these concern your behavior to the world.
But, rather than roll my mat up and throw it into my closet I came back, day after day. Sometimes for just a 15 minute practice, and sometimes for an hour. By the end of the month my crow pose was no longer a near face-plant into the mat—proof that patience and perseverance prevail.
In today 's modern time, not many people exercise. Most of the youth of today are overweight or obese. Teresa Anne Power wrote an article in the USA Today called "Could Yoga be the answer?”. The author of this article is wanting to get the attention of today 's youth and parents as well. Her goal is to get people to "get up and move", to be active and make healthier lifestyle choices. She uses a combination of logos and pathos to help express her opinion. This is a great way for us as America 's youth to get in better shape and stay healthier! Yoga is an excellent way to accomplish this goal we all should have!
Everyday society assumes yoga is just a physical health practice that will make people substantially fit. Social media is making people believe that Yoga is mostly good for exercising in a social, trendy fashion environment. What society does not know is Yoga plays a huge role in emotional hygiene, more so than physical health, Yoga develops a healthy emotional stability for its participants that lead to a healthy lifestyle. Emotionally, Yoga can develop a healthy emotional lifestyle for its participants while leaving a person with more positivity, determination and strength in the human mind.
They noticed that the conditions related to their muscular system, respiratory system, nervous system, and the digestive system improved notably. It has been studied and suggested that regular practice of Yoga increases the brain gamma-Aminobutyric acid levels which helps in regulating the excitability of the nervous system and muscle tone as well. This helps in reducing anxiety and improving mood functions, letting people lead much more emotionally balanced lives. Apart from the abovementioned advantages, yoga also helps in keeping cardiovascular diseases in check. The three principles of yoga: asana (exercise), pranayama (breathing), and drishti (meditation) help in monitoring heart activities and keeping it functioning healthily. It does so by reducing blood pressure, speeding up recovery related to heart failures or cardiac arrests, and lower other cardiovascular risk factors that some people might have genetically imbibed in them. Similarly, it helps people with chronic back aches. Regular practice of yoga can bring relief over a period of time, than medications alone. Pain medications for back ache or spine-related spasms generally have dangerous side effects such as gastric problems, nausea, and the relief they provide last for a very short period of time. Yoga is enjoyable, relaxing, and very beneficial. It eases tension in the body and mind, and helps one to have a more positive outlook on life. No matter which style of yoga one is to choose, there will be some sort of benefit. One should keep in mind to pay attention to their breath to monitor their feelings and try to be as relaxed as possible to comfort the relationship between the mind and body. Depending on the styles and poses a person is to choose, yoga benefits a person not only physically, but mentally as well.

The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. I think that this practice will be useful to me to help reduce my stress and make me less worry. I notice that when I do this practice, it definitely helps me erase negative thoughts in my mind and lets me focused on my body more.
