The Benefits of Inclusion Classroom Settings for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Today with the help of educators, policy makers, advocates, families, and communities, educational researchers have been able to establish various instructional and behavioral techniques. these different methods have been implemented to better the lives of children with disabilities particularly within the education system. Overtime, the public education system has ben transformed due to the interventions and practices advancing the institutions to new heights. In order for an intervention to be successful it must meet each individual child’s needs and provide the with the proper supports and services to do so.
In the United States of America one in eighty-eight children are being diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder alone and the number is only rising. Clark and colleagues (2010) define an Autism Spectrum Disorder as, “a class of life-long neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impairments in reciprocal social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities” (641). With the increasing diagnosis for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, there is now more than ever a growing demand not only for the development of new approaches procedures but a necessity to make improvements to the existing ones.
Several interventions and techniques have been constructed specifically for children on the Autism Spectrum and are introduced during the developmental stages. ...he child on the Autism Spectrum. Since each inclusive classroom intervention is individually based it is essential for teachers to be able to assess the child to enact interventions that accurately meet the child’s interests and strengths.
Personal Reaction
I believe that in order to effectively use inclusion within a classroom you must know about Autism Spectrum Disorders, how to asses them, and be able to know and set in place interventions that are individually specific to the child’s needs. Inclusion further advances society, improves attitudes and brings to light more ways to promote equality, and academic success. Statistics are higher than ever and continue to increase, so we need to not only adverse ourselves with the research that is already out their but continue to discover and adapt interventions in order to better academic success for all students.
