Sculpture is the most important documented form of human experience in history. Sculpture was considered form of art long before drawing. Sculpture has been found in most ancient civilizations, ranging from the Roman Empire to Americas. The Diana Seated sculpture is one example of sculpture of human form. Paintings are two dimensional; they cannot be touched however sculpture gives pleasure of running hand over it. After all the evolution in art, sculpture is still the most important method of expression.
Sculptures are grouped as freestanding or as relief sculpture. Freestanding sculpture is sculpture can be seen from all sides, like a statue. In Relief sculpture the figures is attached to a background in some degree. There are four basic types of sculpture Modeling, Carving, Casting and Assembling.
Material such as clay or wax to create a form of art is called Modeling. Artist uses hand and variety of tools to get the sculpture. However he does not need to have clear image in his mind what he wants to create, he can work and rework the material until he reaches what he wants to portray. For example Honoré Daumier (French, 1808-1879), François-Pierre-Guillaume Guizot, 1831, unfired clay bust painted with oil, 22 x 17 cm, Musée d'Orsay, Paris (Wiki Paintings). In this sculpture Honoré Daumier have used Caricature style to represent François-Pierre-Guillaume Guizot (1787-1874), Deputy, Minister and Historian enhancing the distinctive features to produce a comic effect. This sculpture can be seen from every angle even from behind. I believe Honoré Daumier did a great job by using clay to express cartoon version of François-Pierre-Guillaume Guizot because of the flexibility of clay he must had ease of reshaping it and mold to the...

The process by which this particular statue was created involved using a method developed by Kaikei, a Japanese sculptor. It was a groundbreaking process that involved carving different pieces of wood separately and then joining them together (“Amida”). Instead of using a single object for creating a sculpture, multiple parts could be used to make the statue easier to construct and put together. After the parts were all joined together, the statue was covered in a lacquer finish and gilt was added to the face to give it the golden look.
I disagree with Sporre because there should not be any requirement s to artwork. The reason is what if the artist doesn’t want to carve the material. I think the artist needs to do what they think not what Sporre thinks because he is not the one who is doing their art. When you are looking at a sculpture do you want to ask your self did they make that out of their own ideas or did they just make it because they had to do the requirements that have to be
Before the modern era sculpture was monumental; it had an unspoken meaning. Sculptures of this time were commissioned to commemorate a person or an event. They were eternal, designed to last and make people remember a legacy. When the modern era arrived there came a shift, the concept of sculpture became broader. They were still permanent but no longer site specific or placed of a pedestal; they became nomadic. Flash forward to the postmodern era and sculpture is the space it inhabits, as the site changes so does the meaning. They convey the human experience and become something broader than just a monument as Krauss puts it the realm of sculpture has become “infinitely malleable ”.
Sculpture is a medium that artists in ancient Greek commonly used to express spoken truths in an unspoken form. Every piece of ancient Greek sculpture has more than what the eye sees to explain the story behind the [in this case] marble.
Once again the theme of support, unity, and strength is further represented in the artist choice of mass and volume. Even though the piece of art shows two individual figures, the sculpture is made out of one solid black sandstone. This lets the sculpture appear more robust and compact, signs of strength. However, when observing the relief sculpture in profile it appears that the Queen is slightly tilted back and held up by the sandstone itself which adds a notion of support to the view’s perspective.
Without writing, those sculpture will be inconspicuous, as time goes by this period of history will be faded away, fortunately, word on the stone have magic power which can make sculptures become meaningful. Second, the function of writing, words are a good media to let us leave traces, writing comes into being to retain information across time and across space, people in paleolithic age paint images in clay and on the cave wall. As we mentioned in class, writing has five forms. Pictographic, writing the picture with enough details. Ideographic, writing with general ideas, no detail exists. Logographic, writing the word, one symbol equal one word, take fish as an example, the word fish combine several triangles in different directions with two straight lines. Photographic, a writing linked with the syllable, and alphabetic, one symbol for one phoneme. These five forms reflect the progress of writing's development, the new civilization arising brought the alphabet to a high degree of perfection, and divergent routes led alphabets spread almost all over the world, expect Greece which doesn't need the alphabet to create literature. Third, the writing was entangled with speaking, sometimes the mixing of the visual and the auditory will create puzzles, to some extent, writing is a good way to stain human
Two main devices used in Egyptian art from the fourth dynasty, that also help classify it, are a strive for naturalism and the use of sculpture in the round. In addition to the large burial monuments being built, portraiture became quite popular at this time in history. Paintings featuring humans used their own form of "sculpture in the round" by painting in ...
The trip to the metropolitan museum was a great trip to learn and to study art. What is art you may ask, well art is an expression you use to show a visual picture. It can be through painting or through sculptures. Some other example of art is music, literature and dancing. For today 's paper we will be talking about art as a sculpture. The Menkaure and a queen sculpture is standing against a wall or post. Its sculpted on black stone. The king is standing stiffly and expressionless with his wife holding him while walks forward. The king and queen step with their left foot forward. His hands are clenched and is wearing only a skirt. He also wears a hat. The sculpture seems smooth. The Metropolitan Kouros sculpture is
It is art fulfilling its role in society. It is art that brings the moral issues. It is art that makes us human.
The visual qualities can be immediately perceived by all its forms. My eyes are first naturally drawn to the right which is the major mass part of the sculpture. It appears to be a log with a branch flowing out of it. The lines of the sculpture develop a shape that resembles a pipe. The texture feels hard yet smooth like grasping any branch, tree, ect… The forms of the pip tells several different contents of the art work. This work of art is defined by all its forms. The work of art has a natural color with no oil or paint media added to it.

The Romans have adopted many features from the Greek style of art and architecture during the third and second centuries B.C. During that time period the Romans discovered that they have taking a liking to Greek statues, which they placed in many different places. The Roman sculptors then decided to also start making statues alongside the Greeks. The statues that the Romans created were realistic looking with, sometime, unpleasant details of the body. The Greeks made statues with, what they thought of, ideal appearances in the statues figure. Sculpture was possibly considered the highest form of art by the Romans, but figure painting was very high considered as well. Very little of Roman painting has survived the tests of time.
“Art is a recurring form of human practice. Some have argued that all human societies have shown evidence of artistic activities.” (Carroll 5)
Throughout the ages art has played a crucial role in life. Art is universal and because art is everywhere, we experience it on a daily basis. From the houses we live in (architecture) to the movies we see (theatre) to the books that we read (literature). Even in ancient culture art has played a crucial role. In prehistoric times cave dwellers drew on the wall of caves to record history. In biblical times paintings recorded the life and death of Christ. Throughout time art has recorded history. Most art is created for a specific reason or purpose, it has a way of expressing ideas and beliefs, and it can record the experiences of all people.
