There are few companies in the 101st Airborne that achieved the status the men of Easy Company would gain during their career in World War II. From the making of formation of the company at Camp Toccoa, in Georgia, the men of Easy Company were destined to impact the course of the war. They became legends in American military history with their acts of bravery and heroics they showed in the face of the German army. From Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, their fame grew with each great mission they accomplished. The generations that would follow respected the uniform they wore, and the company’s comradeship grew deeper than a normal soldier’s companionship would in a war with his fellow- man. Throughout the book, Stephen Ambrose, pointed out the men of Easy Company were given the toughest missions in the war clearly because they were the élite, the best of the best to say. But it would go deeper making these men into brothers, a band of brothers.
“At the peak of its effectiveness, in Holland in October 1944 and in the Ardennes in January 1945, it was as good a rifle company as there was in the world”. From the beginning of Band of Brothers, author Stephen Ambrose positively argued that the men of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne were the best and most well-trained army company who went into World War II and to come out of it, as well. Ambrose backs his argument by writing about the company's training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia from July of 1942 through December of that same year. The men who joined the Easy Company, forming in 1942, were promised extra pay, great exhilaration, and the thrill of taking the war to the Nazis by jumping out of an airplane as a paratrooper. ...n American soldier shot two German civilians, a British major, and wounded a member of Easy Company severely before driving off. Cases such as these were common and would continue until the war ended with the troops being sent home.
The men of East Company were from very different places and circumstances. Each individual volunteered for their own personal reasons and were strangers when they first arrived. As a matter of fact, the only thing the men had in common was the brotherhood they developed at the end of the summer of 1942. However, once the war was over the men of Easy undeniably had proven themselves. No matter what task Easy completed, nor the odds or how outnumbered they were by the enemy; their elite training, ability to take on the toughest missions, and ability to complete them successfully would be what generations would honor them for years to come.
