In 1782, the bald eagle was elected as the national symbol of the United States of America, yet by the early 1960’s, it was nearly extinct in the Continental United States. A combination of many dangers, with the main danger being the pesticide DDT, the bald eagle was on the verge of extinction. Yet, through conservation measure applied by the United States government the bald eagle cam back from the brink and was taken off of the endangered species list in 2007.
The main downfall of the bald eagle was the pesticide DDT. DDT otherwise known andichlorodiphenyltrichoorethane, would not dissolve in water or break down in the environment. This cause it to be absorbed by small animals or aquatic plants. The contaminated plants or small animals were thereatfter eaten by fist. These subsequent fish were then scooped and and eaten by bald eagles. Now, the higher up in the food chain DDT travelled, the more embedded it became in the animal’s fate. This caused the eagles to lay eggs with weak shells which, in turn caused the population to diminish. After the government found tra...
When people started to see the declining of wildlife animals include bison and many colorful birds; it cause a rise of conservation. A cause of the extermination of bison is “From the Great Slave Lake to the Rio Grande, the home of the buffalo was everywhere overrun by the man with a gun; and, as had ever been the case, the wild creatures were gradually swept away, the largest and most conspicuous forms being the first to go.”(Doc.2) And the new information about the number of beautiful birds used to furnish women’s hats caused further conservation movement. “It if high time for the whole civilized world to know that many of the most beautiful and remarkable birds of the world are now being exterminated to furnish millinery ornaments for womenswear. The mass of the new information that we have recently secured on this
Bald Eagles are the national bird of the United States. They can grow to be 30-43 inches and have a wingspan of 6-8 feet. Their distinct white head and tail allow spectators to determine which type of bird it is from a distance.
Every day many species are slowly becoming either endangered or extinct and recently an endangered bird species called piping plovers, started nesting on Revere Beach. What would seem as a miraculous discovery, many are averse to their new inhabitants on the beach. Many Revere residents are complaining because the piping plovers now occupy parts of “their” beach. But in the article “Revere Beach should welcome the piping plover” The Editorial Board believes that the presence of the piping plover could be greatly beneficial to the city of Revere and I certainly agree. What led me to select this particular article is my concern for the many endangered species in the world like the piping plover. Human hands have led many species to become endangered
A leopard is a powerful cat that is big that are almost related to lions, tiger, and jaguars. The leopard is a strong animal. It can be comfortable in trees, and it usually kills its prey into some type of branches. They would drag the body somewhere where it can be safe and for hyenas or any other animal not to eat their food. They are able to hunt from trees. The reason is because since they have a spotted coat, that allows them for their skin to be visible with the leaves or wherever they are hiding. This animal is a predator and stalks animals, like an antelope, deer, and pigs. When they are stalking, they usually are ready to eat their prey. That would mean they have to not move as much on the tall grass. As they see a person close to them they would either attack and animal if theres no animal it will immeadtly attack the person. Leopards are good swimmers, where they would sometimes eat fish when they swim or crabs. A leopard can give birth throughout the whole year, it doesn't matter when. Usually they give birth to two cubs that would look grayish with barely visible spots. The leopard mom would have to hide its cub in other not get eating. Once they are old enough to play and hunt they are free to be on their own. Cubs usually live with their mothers for a short time like two years because leopards are consider to be solitary animals as in been by themselves most of the time. . Most leopards are light colored with usually some dark spots, they are called rosettes.
Many animals depend on different environments such as lakes, oceans or the forest in order to survive. However due to human intervention such as pollution of the ocean, or heavy deforestation, many animals are at the risk of extinction. One such example is known as the Gundlach Hawk which due to deforestation is currently on the endangered species list. Due to it being on the list, conservation attempts are being made in order to keep the animal alive and save it from extinction.
One of the main reasons that burrowing owls are becoming endangered is because the habitat changes in the United States. They require grasslands to look for holes to nest in. Since burrowing owls are unable dig their own holes they rely on prairie dogs, badgers, and gophers. Most people consider the above animals to be a hassle because they dig holes in places they shouldn’t they end up getting killed off by poisons. Burrowing owls are predators, but because they are the smallest of all the owls they are not on the top of the owl food chain. This puts them at risk for becoming prey to other predators in the wild such as other owls, coyotes, badgers, and several other predators.
The bald eagle was finally adopted as the emblem of the United States in 1787 because "its long life, great strength, and majestic looks, and also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent." The bald eagle has survived for many years. It was almost lost at one point, and finally now is on its way back and the numbers are rising thanks to many efforts by various foundations. The Bald Eagle is more than a just a bird like every other species it too has a special part in keeping the food chain going.
However, the population of the California condors decreased tremendously during the late 1970s, with only 22 reported alive worldwide in the year 1982-1983 and only nine in the wild by 1985. It was the lowest recorded number of this creature (Church, 2006). And the habitats also shrunk from several locations to only California area. The Condor was then added to the endangered species list of the United States. Moreover, Condor comes under the category of critically endangered (CR) species which is the most severe category under conservation status subjected to species at the highest risk of extinction. Since then various organizations and societies are working on conserving this creature and bringing it back to wildlife.(USFWS, N.D.)
“It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder,” Albert Einstein. The Vietnam War was a war that America did not need. America believed they were doing good. They believed that they were protecting the people of Vietnam. America did not realise that they were only making a bad situation worse. America stopped nothing. They didn’t stop communism; they didn’t save the people of Vietnam. America caused the number of casualties in Vietnam to increase and had their own people killed. They caused diseases and destroyed the environment with the help of Agent Orange. America sent soldiers on a mission with a result of hundreds of civilians murdered. America did not help anyone. America sent people out to murder others and to be killed in the line of duty.
The USFWS made a recovery plan in 1992. The plan stated that “the golden-cheeked warbler will be considered for delisting when (1) sufficient breeding habitat has been protected to ensure the continued existence of at least one viable, self-sustaining population in each of 8 regions outlined in the plan; (2) the potential for gene flow exists across regions between demographically self sustaining populations where needed for long-term viability; (3) sufficient and sustainable non-breeding habitat exists to support the breeding populations; (4) all existing golden cheeked warbler populations on public lands are protected and managed to ensure their continued existence; and (5) all of these criteria have been met for 10 consecutive years” (USFWS 1992). In 1996 the USFWS stated that a viable population size for the Recovery Region should exceed 3000 breeding pairs. In 2004 a study by Alldredge et al. supported the USFWS, that the minimum viable breeding pairs should be
Many species are part of the endangered animals, and steppe eagle is no different. Any endangered animals suffers HIPPO (Habitat Destruction, Invasive Species, Population, Pollution, and Overharvesting.), and like other flying species suffers electrocution. This eagle can’t be found in United States, but they are located outside of Europe to Central Asia. There are about 800-1200 pairs of steppe eagle. I choose steppe eagle because I believe steppe eagles should not be harmed by power lines and their destruction of their habitat. Unfortunately there hasn’t been a favorable or a specific solution for this eagle. I will propose to you one of my suggestions to help steppe eagles free from being endangered.

Early in history DDT was a very effective chemical that killed many parasites and stopped the mass spread of malaria. But the reward is not worth the damage that it does to the environment, especially in modern day where we have other ways to prevent parasite and diseases from getting to us. "Top of the Food Chain" by T. Coraghessan Boyle, is a story about the absolute absurdity of things that human beings do to their world and to their fellow living beings. Set during a Senate hearing by a chemical company executive on the defensive about the effects of DDT in Borneo. Basically, poison was used to get rid of mosquitoes. Didn't work. So they brought in geckos, that died from the poison. Cats ate dead geckos, and cats died. This brought on rat infestation. So they brought in more cats and cycle started over again. He is arguing that humans are wrong for destroying their planet with pesticides and other harmful things; this satirical piece effectively supports his argument.
Thousands of years ago, hunting may have been the cause of the extinction of the North American large land mammals. “Moving up into the 1940’s and 50’s some of today’s most prominent game animals were almost non-existent.”(Kerry G) Over-hunting will directly cause the decline in the particular animal’s species. This will effect everything around it, for example ...
Polar bears prefer to live in extremely cold artic climates. They live only in the Northern Hemisphere, on the arctic ice cap, and they spend most of their time on coastal areas. Polar bears are widely spread in Canada, extending from the northern arctic islands south to the Hudson Bay area. They are also found in Greenland, on islands off the shore of Norway, on the northern coast of the former Soviet Union, and on the northern and northwestern coasts of Alaska in the United States.
