Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism numbers are on the rise in the U.S and more and more cases of autism are being diagnosed each day. Many parents are unaware that they have a child with autism. Signs of autism are not easily detected so, parents who suspect that they may have a child with developmental delays or a child with autism would have a hard time distinguishing autism from other developmental problems. There are no specific causes or cures for autism but with today’s technology that just might change.
“Autism is not just one disorder, but a spectrum of closely related disorders with a shared core of symptoms” (Help guide 2013). Though it may vary in each person, autism effects the emotional, empathy, communication, flexible behavior and social skills. Autism also varies on the level of disability from one person to another, one child may show severe signs while the other you barely notice have this disorder. Sign and symptoms of autism are often ignored and passed off as a slight delay, and believe the child will grow out of it. When a child is seeming to lack socialization skills, not able to communicate, or show strange repetitive behavior continuously; the child should be tested. There is not a pin pointed cause of ASD, but it many researchers believe it has something to do with defected genes or incomplete development of the baby’s brain. (Proctor, Young- Adams 2013) If autism is caught when it in its very early stages it make a big difference and may help improve cognitive and social skills. More test are being added to the testing of the autism diagnostic schedule to ideally detect the disorder at around eighteen months. ...en the same age, but they become frightened of having their child labeled and what others are going to say. If a child is suspected to have autism, then the process should be taken very seriously to either rule out autism or make a definite diagnosis and get treatment started.

Autism spectrum disorder and autism are both terms to describe a group of developmental disorders of the brain. These disorders are measured in varying degrees by difficulties in social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviors. There is no one type of autism, just like there is no one cause. Experts are still unsure about all the causes of autism, but it appears to be a combination of multiple circumstances. These circumstances include environmental, biological and genetic factors. In past decades, pop culture has created the belief of the possible link between autism and vaccinations, although this is not the case, why does this myth still persist in our culture?
Every year doctors diagnose thousands of adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to the growing awareness of autism and recent developments in technology, scientists and doctors can now discover and observe the effects of autism on society, and people. Starting with its discovery, researchers have been able to diagnose people more effectively. Doctors are beginning to discover what causes this disorder, and are currently trying to find ways to prevent and treat it. Many places have opened their doors to people with this disorder, creating autistic friendly environments where people are patient and understanding. Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives.

These people believe that it is important to embrace the disorders as opposed to eliminating them. Personally, I believe the choice should be decided by the adults who are diagnosed with autism because they would have a better understanding of the effects of this disorder on their lives. Some may be happy that they can individualize themselves from the rest of society and live their lives the way they feel is best; however, others may wish for a cure to what they believe is to be a curse on themselves. Regardless of how they feel about being affected with autism spectrum disorder, the adults with autism and the youth with autism are still living one day at a time, just like the rest of society.
The Autism Spectrum is a mystery. With no cause or cure, researchers have been working hard, to the best of their abilities, to diagnose, treat, and educate those with autism. For centuries, since 1943, with enhanced technology, the view on autism has improved tremendously. New advancements have been developed to diagnose autism earlier, help create more successful treatments, and to help better an educational plan for people with autism.
Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.

In the United States, autism may affect up to 115,000 children between one and 15 years of age with an uncertain prevalence in adults (Rapin, 1998). Because of the high number of cases in the United States alone, testing has grown and encompasses many different ages and areas of autistic patients and their symptoms. Because of increased testing, researchers have found different options to meet the challenges autism presents.
Two to six children out of every thousand will end up with Autism. Autism is one of the fastest growing disorders with a great amount of studies being put behind it. Take the category of social interaction and relationships symptoms include : non verbal communication development problems such as , eye - to - eye gazing, body language, and facial expressions, failure to make friends with people their own age, lack of interest, and lack of empathy. The category for verbal and non verbal symptoms include : Delay or lack when learning to talk, about forty person of people with autism never speak, problems with starting, and keeping conversations, repetitive use of language, and difficulty understanding what someone is saying. Finally the category of interests and play include : unusual focus on pieces, preoccupation on certain topics, a need for the same routine, and stereotyped behaviors like hand flapping and body rocking.
Autism has been misjudged for many years and some people have gone without treatment and were locked up in mental hospitals for the rest of their lives due to the ignorance of the public... The main problem is that there has not been any productive treatment available to help them in the past. The typical case of autism can be frightening to those who are not educated in the characteristics on how one can be affected by autism and its symptoms. It would be easy to be intimidated and overwhelmed by the reactions of people that have autism. There are several ways to diagnose autism, however it is in many cases not being recognized, and especially in children who have debilitating handicaps such as schizophrenia. Although some people aren’t aware of this fact this is because Autism is not shown publically as much as other disability. Take cancer for example everyone knows about the National cancer society to some extent,but autism not so much. Just as some people may not know that April 2nd is national autism day. The best thing people do is educating yourself on the disability and showing love and public awareness for autism.
Autism is characterized as a developmental disorder that is seen in children by the age of three years old. Autism affects the brains normal, natural development, and causes many impairments. The major impairments that affect an individual are reciprocal socialization, Qualitative impairment in communication, and repetitive or unusual behavior. Signs of Autism can be seen in early infanthood, with proper awareness and resources. An infant child can appear to be adverse to eye contact early on. Some signs in early infancy appear as being indifferent to affection and physical contact. When spoken to, they can appear to be deaf or ignoring the parent or caregiver. Noticing the early red flags of Autism can provide an early intervention and give the child the best chance at learning to tolerate their environment. Children around three years old will display certain signs and symptoms.

Autism is a widely varied disorder with effects ranging from improved intelligence and savant abilities to the inability to speak and live a normal life. Despite all the research and effort to cure it, there is no cure for autism. With the rates of autism climbing and more people, like Daniel Tammet, being affected, there is an increasing need to learn about this interesting disorder.

The spectrum of the disorders ranges from a mild condition called Asperger’s syndrome to a more severe form, which severely impairer’s development. The Office of Communications and Public Liaison states that the disorder affects one and eighty-eight children, however ASD effects boys more frequently than girls (Office of Communications and Public Liaison, 2013). ASD emerges in all age, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The significant varied character and severity of the disorder is why ASD is considered a spectrum that poses a broad range of symptoms.
Each year the number of children diagnosed with autism is increasing so quickly that it is now estimated that roughly 1 in 88 children have some form of autism spectrum disorder (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007). Recent legislation including No Child Left Behind (NCLB) 2001 and Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) 2004 are mandating that a push towards inclusive classrooms that contain both general education students and special education students in the same class. With the push for inclusion comes the challenge of selecting teaching strategies appropriate for the inclusive classroom. Many different teaching interventions and strategies are implemented in the education of the student with autism.
