Dance is an art, a creative portal, a form of expression; it is a sport. Atop all of the things that dance can be, it is also something physical. It takes work, power and effort. It takes stamina, grace and an extreme amount of muscle and flexibility. What do athletes need to have, all of those characteristics. When it comes to athletes, of any kind, dance can help with honing their skills. Something that most athletes do not seem to understand is that dance is just as much a physical and athletic sport as their sport is. Dance can help in areas that regular conditioning, working out, stretching, and practicing cannot.
Dance is not only a sport, but an art. When athletes participate in the arts it makes them more well– rounded people. As said by Albert Einstein, “Dancers are the athletes of God.” (Albert Einstein Quotes). The arts awaken the right brain, giving people the ability to think more openly and creatively, they find musicality and rhythm. Along with imagination and innovation that the right brain brings, dance can help heighten spatial development, awakening the left brain. The left brain brings holistic thinking and mental flexability, therefore increasing the ability for problem sloving. It can help with pattern recognition and the ability to calculate and plan. It gives an increased motivation to learn and can improve accademic performance overall. Dance is able to open the mind and give a person more self-confidence, higher self- esteem, and a stronger self-determination. With dance, people are more likely to be persistant and accurate, and build a higher sense of accomplishment. The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.

Young girls and women symbolize femininity with being a ballerina. Kelso comments that in the shadows of the spotlight lurks an abusive world of eating disorders, verbal harassment, fierce competition, injuries, fatigued, and malnourished dancers (Kelso, 2003). In today’s world of ballet, dancers suffer from always being in pain, worrying their body image is not the right look they need to have to get lead roles resulting in the development of eating disorders, and male ballet dancers are stereotyped as being homosexual when most of the male dancers are in fact heterosexual.
For the dancer, music and choreography are paramount. The music guides the dancer, and the moves express the music. However, the dance has to start from somewhere.

...dance education is to continue growing throughout public schools and colleges in the United States, students, parents, and the rest of the community will need to stand behind their dance educators. Dance has always served a form of great exercise that allows people to express themselves through movement, and will continue to do so into the future. Dance education in the elementary level is a place that may need some help in child development, and the way to solve this problem is by getting classroom teachers who are skilled in dance and creative movement instruction. Dance education in the secondary level also needs to get highly skilled teachers who are also certified in dance themselves. It would also help attract more students if dance was presented in a different department other than physical education. Dance education in the college level is taught by certified dance instructors, therefore dancers in this level are able to explore movements, while being critiqued by someone who knows what is happening. Dance education has played a major role in the development of children of all ages, and will continue to do so, as long as dance educators and dancers have the proper support.
Dancing is a tremendously difficult task. That is why all dancers must have a mind mentally
Did you know that a professional Ballet dancer is more physically fit than an Olympic
It is essential that dancers develop a strong sense of self-awareness, especially in relationship to their core since dancers must hold their spine firm through all their combinations. The abdominals and trunk muscles are the key to controlling every leap, twist, and turn. Therefore, Isacowitz statement that “without awareness, little can be achieved” absolutely applies to dance. Another connection to awareness involves group dance performances. Here, dancers must be aware of their spacing not only in relation to the stage and audience, but to other performers on the floor. And in addition to physical awareness, dancers must be alert cerebrally because mental awareness will “induce relaxation, mood improvements and stress reduction,” according to Heid. These benefits can benefit dancers with day to day struggles with hectic schedules, difficult combinations, and simple
