Hamlet the Hero
There are various ways to define a hero. There is an endless amount of people who are heroes. A hero can be, "one who exhibits courage and/or daring," a hero can be, "one who is supremely noble or self-sacrificing," a hero can be a champion or a winner. A hero can save the day, or even save your life. A hero can be that normal person you see just walking down the street. According to either of these definitions, Prince Hamlet can definitely be identified as a hero. For his words and actions, clearly exhibit such label, and give one the right and reason to say so.
"But two months dead-- …my poor father’s body…why she married with my uncle, My father’s brother, but no more like my father…Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears…But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue" Hamlet painfully moans to himself. It is clear at the beginning of the play that Hamlet was suffering—emotionally. It hurt him to see his mother marry so soon after his father’s death and Hamlet felt alone since no one else seemed to feel his pain and be mourning with him. It’s safe to conclude that Hamlet had a commendable and upright relationship with his father whom he admired. Unless one was not as courageous or as confident as Hamlet, we would’ve complained and tried to ruin the marriage. Prince Hamlet on the other hand, showed heroic skills by putting others first. He kept his pain to himself and didn’t want to cause any difficulties with the townspeople or family.
He shows this self-sacrifice ability once again when King Claudius tried to convince him to stay at home, rather than going away to school. He says "You are most immediate to our throne…For your intent In going back to school in Wittenberg, It is most retrograde to our desire, And we beseech you, bend you to remain Here in the cheer and comfort of our eye." Queen Gertrude reinforces that request when she said, "Let not thy mother lose her prayers, Hamlet. I pray thee, stay with us. Go not to Wittenberg." Even though the young Prince Hamlet felt more at home and comfortable with his friends at school in Wittenberg, he respectfully replied, "I shall in all my best obey you, madam."
"Lady, shall I lie in your lap…I mean, my head upon your lap…That’s a fair thought to lie between a maids’ legs" Hamlet outrageously says to Ophelia, as he was anxiously awaiting for the play to finally begin.
Patriot’s Dream (2007) by Barbara Michaels and The War of 1812 (1965) by Harry L. Coles presented two different time periods. Patriot’s Dream illustrated the Revolution War and the era. The War of 1812 illustrated the battles that led to the war of 1812 in the new nation era. Both of these books were secondary sources that brought focus to topics of the wars between Britain and America that Norman K. Risjord presented in his book Jefferson’s America, 1760-1815 (2010).
To start, Tolstoy believes that are can either be universally good art or good for people with specific tastes. However, the very best works have the ability to be universally
In his article “Why We Travel,” Paul Theroux talks about how short term travelers, which are people who are traveling for short periods of time, experience the same type of fear that long term travelers and movers encounter. Theroux states, “Throughout history the traveler has been forced to recognize the fact that leaving home means a loss of innocence, encountering uncertainty” (Theroux). For the longest time, in America it was thought that this loss of innocence and encounter with uncertainty was all a part of the experience, and that the risk was well worth the reward. But that theory has long been thrown out the window according to Arthur Brooks, because in his article “How to Get Americans Moving Again,” he writes about an America that is unmoving, and unwilling to travel, partially due to these
There is not one true solution to fix these issues. I personally believe that one of the best ways to combat food insecurity in the U.S. would be increasing the federal funding to the assistance programs. Food drives and soup kitchens are another wonderful way to help families who do not have the money to purchase food. This issue will not be resolved overnight, but with the right decisions politically and personally, Americans can help their fellow citizens reduce the national percentage of food insecure families.
More tragic play The tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark is the most popular works of William Shakespeare. Probably the popularity of this play lies in the use of character of Hamlet in exemplifying the human mind through its complex workings. Hamlet’s internal dilemma of making the decision whether he should revenge the death of his father or not was a crucial turn in his life as the state of mind was the main reason which effected the decision power one makes in his life. His uncle Claudius was the one who murdered his father and the moment when the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears and asks Hamlet as to when the revenge of his foul and most unnatural murder is to take place. From this point onward Hamlet is under a constant dilemma. He does not find himself ready to take the revenge. If Hamlet had killed Claudius at the first opportunity than the revenge would have been taken but his internal dilemma would have never been solved. This play became very popular and the reason for the popularity was Shakespeare’s use of the character Hamlet and through this character he has tried to exemplify the complex workings of human’s mind. Shakespeare used emotion, reason and attitude of Hamlet to allow the readers to form an opinion or make a judgment about the basic aspects of the life of human beings. The reason the prince could not take the revenge of his father’s death was that he was a man of great moral integrity and to take revenge was an act which was against his deepest principals. Some of the other behaviors of the prince was that after the death of his father Hamlet became so disenchanted with his life that he lost all his desire and will to take any kind of revenge. Due to the delay in revenge Shakespeare was able to develop th...
Any great king must be compassionate, and Hamlet is the embodiment of compassion. He shows this through his great sadness after his father’s death. Unlike many others in the play, Hamlet continues to mourn long after his father’s death. In fact, he never stops thinking of his father, even though his mother rushed into a marriage with Claudius a mere two months after her husband’s funeral. Also, Hamlet shows the reader his compassion through
Even though Hamlet is a prince, he has little control over the course of his life. In that time many things were decided for the princes and princesses such as their education and even who they married. This was more or less the normal way of life for a child of the monarch. But in the case of Hamlet, any of the control he thought he had, fell away with the murder of his father. Having his father, the king, be killed by his own brother, sent Hamlet into a state of feeling helpless and out of control. Cooped up in a palace with no real outlet, he tries to control at least one aspect of his life. Hamlet deliberately toys with Ophelia's emotions in order to feel in control of something since he cannot control the situation with Claudius.
After the death of Old Hamlet and Gertrude’s remarriage to Claudius, Hamlet feels extremely angry and bitter. “How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable / Seem to me all the uses of this world!” (1.2.133-134). Due to the death of his father, he is already in a state of despair and the lack of sympathy that his mother has towards his sorrow does not aid him in recovering from this stage of grief. “Good Hamlet, cast thy knighted colour off, / And let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark” (1.2.68-69). Hamlet is struggling to accept the fashion in which Gertrude is responding to the death of Old Hamlet; she seems quite content with her new life with Claudius, which is a difficult concept for him to accept as after the d...
Early Thursday morning, on October 22, 2015 about 8:17 a.m. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a front door open in the 800 block of Lynah Street. While police officers was checking the residence they found Kiana Marshall (21), Alexis Kitchens (19), and Isaiah Martin (18), deceased, with gunshot wounds inside the home. Many neighbors said that they heard gunshots around 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m. but was uncertain on where exactly the gunshots came from. Gun violence in the United States is a major issue, especially for the African American community. Americans should always care about gun violence in the United States and not wait until someone we know gets shot and killed. As Americans we think we shouldn’t
This assures that the nurse is obtaining information about the patient to get a full picture of the patient. For example, Mrs. Jones previous exam she was five foot six inches and on the most recent visit she is five foot and four in a half inches, losing an inch and a half. If the nurse or physician wasn’t comparing the two information they wouldn’t have all the data needed to make a diagnosis. Considering that Mrs. Jones had changes in her height, tests should be performed on to determine if she has osteoporosis. The most common test for diagnosis is by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT), technology that measures bone mass density (Drake, et al., 2015). In addition, national guidelines now recommend using FRAX, which is a fraction prediction tool (Ferrari, et al., 2012). Laboratory testing should also be performed to assess for possible deficiencies increasing bone loss. For example, serum calcium, phosphate, hematocrit, thyroid dysfunction, vitamin D deficiency (Ferrari, et al.,
Vaccination is one the greatest achievements of public health which led to a marked decline in the rate of infectious diseases in the 19th century. (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 1999) However, currently a growing number of parents are in doubt regarding the safety of vaccines and the necessity to follow the recommended vaccination schedule for their children, resulting in many parents following an alternative schedule of vaccination or complete refusal of vaccination. (Dempsey et al., 2011)
His first words in the play is an aside saying "A little more than kin and less than kind" (Shakespeare. 1.2.64-65). Hamlet is already distrustful of those around him, shown in the way Shakespeare uses an aside. This displays a lack of trust and ability to speak his mind out loud. Due to the death of his father and the quick and untimely coronation of Claudius as the new king, Hamlet becomes hostile and distrustful of the people around him as people tell him to move forward and accept his father 's death, just as they have. While he believes his sorrow and mourning is genuine, Hamlet discloses to his mother that the other 's mourning is fake and only "seems"(1.2.83) real. Hamlet believes that their loyalty is fickle and unreliable, there by isolating himself and relying on his inner circle of friends and family to deal with his loss and to loss that support, would leave Hamlet
There are many factors that lead Hamlet into putting himself in a difficult position. There are many incidents where it’s not Hamlet’s poor attitude that gets him in trouble, but his great ambition to uncover the truth. Once Hamlet discovers that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are spying on him, he never lets them out of his sight. Hamlet suspects that his mother, Gertrude, was an accomplice for the murder of his father. Polonius was slain by Hamlet who had mistaken him for Claudius. His pretense of madness drove Ophelia to her death. All of these incidents show that its Hamlet’s great ambition to uncover the truth that gets himself in difficult positions.
Will Hamlet avenge his father’s death? Who killed King Hamlet? Is Hamlet really mad? These are the things that keeps the reader intrigued throughout Hamlet. Throughout Hamlet, the main character, Hamlet, is shown to be the tragic hero of the play. A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgement error that inevitably leads to his or her own destruction. A Greek philosopher, by the name of Aristotle, said that any tragic hero must have a tragic flaw. Hamlet is a perfect example of a tragic hero because of the many tragic flaws he has. Hamlet also experiences suffering in the play and he also learns lessons. The tragic hero is an important character; without one, there wouldn’t be a tragic play.
In addition to this internal struggle, Hamlet feels it is his duty to dethrone Claudius and become the King of Denmark. This revenge, he believes, would settle the score for his mother’s incestuous relationship and would reinstate his family’s honor. These thoughts are solidified in Act I, Scene 5, when his father’s ghost appears and informs Hamlet that is was Claudius who murdered him, and that Claudius deprived him “of life, of crown, and queen” (line 75). This information leads to Hamlet’s promise to kill Claudius, while not punishing his mother for their incestuous marriage. His statement, “thy commandment all alone shall live within the book and volume of my brain” (lines 102-103), demonstrates his adamant decision to let nothing stand in the way of his promise for revenge.
