The Scarlet Letter - Two Symbols of Her Crime
“It lies not in the pleasure of the magistrates to take off this badge,” calmly replied Hester. “Were I worthy to be quit of it, it would fall away of its own nature, or be transformed into something that should speak a different purport.” (163)
Hester Prynne, the central character in the Scarlet Letter, realizes and accepts the consequences of the adulterous act she committed against her husband, Roger Chillingworth, as Hawthorne shows in this quotation. Hester, throughout the book, excludes and humbles herself because of her crime, rather than simply running away. At the same time, she advertises her sin through the brilliantly embroidered “A” and through her daughter, Pearl, born out of this sin. Hester realizes that she indeed sinned in committing adultery, and, being the strong individual that she is, accepts the consequences of her actions.
In fact, much of the suffering incurred from Hester’s sin results from her own actions. She, by her own choice, wears humble, dismal clothes; she moves to the outskirts of her town, but refuses to run away to a place where no one knows of her crime; she excludes herself from society, while society does not always exclude her. Instead of escaping her crime, Hester embraces it. She declares, “It lies not in the pleasure of the magistrates to take off this badge... Were I worthy to be quit of it, it would fall away of its own nature, or be transformed into something that should speak a different purport,” realizing the crime she committed and the fairness of her punishment—the scarlet letter (163).
Hester goes so far as to dwell upon the letter as a symbol of her guilt. The brilliant crimson “A” resides on her humbly clothed chest, making the letter stand out all the more; Pearl, the child of sin, runs beside her mother, dressed in spectacular clothing “abundantly embroidered with fantasies and flourishes of gold thread,” in effect, personifying that same symbol (102). In each case, Hester advertises the fact that she has sinned and that she is paying for her crime, again bring more suffering upon herself. And again, she accepts it. She realizes the letter should only be removed when she is no longer guilty of her crime. She knows, therefore, that day will never come.
Society, however, thinks differently.
Feinstein is serving as a senator for 21years (1992-present). She is the legislative committee member of Appropriations, Judiciary, Rules and Administration, and she is the committee Chair of Select Committee on Intelligence. In her first term as a senator, she co-authored the Gun Free Schools Act and the Hate Crimes Sentencing Enhancement Act in 1994. Also she led legislation banning sale and possession of military-style assault weapons.
Hester Prynne, the protagonist in the book The Scarlet Letter, has committed the sin of adultery, but learned to use that mistake as a form of strength. Hester’s husband, Roger Chillingworth, sent her to America and was supposed to follow her, but never arrived in Boston. While Hester was waiting on Chillingworth, she had an affair with the town minister, Dimmesdale. As a result, Hester gave birth to a beautiful daughter and was forced to wear the scarlet
There are two types of Tuberculosis: Latent TB infection and TB disease. Latent TB is the infection that occurs in a patient who has not been previously exposed to the disease and has not been sensitized. TB Disease occurs when the immune system is not able to fend off the disease and the bacteria become active and multiply. Of patients who contract the disease, approximately 5% of them actually develop TB to the full extent.
When an adolescent in the Amish culture turns sixteen, they are encouraged to pursue “Rumspringa”- a period of time to go experience the English world, free from traditional Amish restrictions. The intention of this exposure is to give teenagers the experience of life outside the restrictive Amish community and truly decide if they want to join the Amish church and its traditions or live in the English world. During this period, parents and elders of the Amish church allow children to be their own authority. They do not question the actions taken, regardless of the dangers or consequences of those decisions. The Amish community believes this is the best method for the adolescents to decide their fate freely. I however, disagree with this hands’ off, ignore-the behavior approach Amish parents and leaders take with their children. I believe the approach of introducing inexperienced youths to uninhibited freedom, without warning or guidance, increases risk-taking behaviors and provides the adolescents with a skewed view of what the “outside world” has to offer. Yes, the majority of the Amish children return to the community after Rumspringa, but did they really get an accurate picture of what a balanced English life could be?
Several questions I was left with after watching Devil’s Playground: Amish Teenagers in the Modern World, was that of wondering who was paying for these teenagers cars a...
If introducing degu pups to adults, this should be done when the pups are no older than 8 weeks. This makes it much easier for the adults to accept the young as it is in their nature to care for the pups as they pose no threat to the group.

William Lyon Mackenzie King was one of the greatest prime ministers in Canada, although he did not give a fascinating speech or had an exciting image and supported few radical policies . King’s opinions were very strong and would not be changed no matter what. No one could influence King and this was shown through his leadership during the Great Depression and the election in 1930.

Even with the hateful comments and the negative attitude towards her daughter and herself, Hester believes that she can raise Pearl right, and to be a good mother even with the scarlet letter on her bosom. Hester`s confidence in herself, not giving up, and to keep pushing forward when times are tough keep her from drowning in despair, self-pity, guilt, and depression. For example, Hester defends her rights of motherhood to keep Pearl, and to have the confidence to speak such a way to the ministers and Governor Bellingham. Hester says, “God gave her into my keeping, repeated Hester Prynne, raising her voice almost to a shriek. I will not give her up! —And here, by sudden impulse, she turned to the young clergyman, Mr. Dimmesdale, at whom, up to this moment, she had seemed hardly so much as once to direct her eyes” (Hawthorne, 103). The quote explains how even with the scarlet letter on her chest, Hester has her own identity and will defend Pearl for anything. Hester`s true identity and the way society views her are entirely different, because she is described as a sinful hussy who does not know how to raise a child, when in reality, Hester would give her own life for
Through Hester and the symbol of the scarlet letter, Hawthorne reveals how sin can be utilized to change a person for the better, in allowing for responsibility, forgiveness, and a renewed sense of pride. In a Puritan society that strongly condemns adultery one would expect Hester to leave society and never to return again, but that does not happen. Instead, Hester says, “Here…had been the scene of her guilt, and here should be the scene of her earthly punishment; and so, perchance, the torture of her daily shame would at length purge her soul, and work out another purity than that which she had lost; more saint-like, because the result of martyrdom.” Hes...
In conclusion, collective dilemmas happens everywhere, therefore, the government as “third party” has the advantage to solve public problem and issue. The main reason result to collective dilemmas is the bounded rationality, which claim people are rational, goal-oriented which leads cooperative problem.
Iago’s hatred towards Roderigo is clear for the reasons that he took advantage of him, convinced him to sell his land, and “put money in thy purse” (1.3.341). Iago’s hatred is so powerful he was willing to use Roderigo as his puppet, in order to get into the minds of others. It becomes evident Iago hates Roderigo when he admits he looks down upon him as a "sick fool” (2.3.45). Iago’s malig...
The European Renaissance was a time of great change. The people of that time were beginning to take an interest in learning and also began to follow the idea of humanism. Humanism was a way of life where a person would reject most religious beliefs and focus on the here and now. One of the main things Humanist believed in was individual achievement. This gave many artists the opportunity to be known around Europe for his or her talent and not be criticized for being selfish. This is exactly what Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, or more commonly known as Donatello did. This gifted Italian sculptor was born in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, around the year 1386. Donatello grew up already set up on the path to be a great craftsman. His father was a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild, this influenced Donatello’s choice of career. Donatello’s name started to become known after he created an Annunciation carved in stone for the church of S. Croce in his hometown, Florence. After this, Donatello was hired to create art for many well-known patrons such as the Medici family. He also collaborated with other talented sculptors and artist of his time, like Ghiberti. Donatello was a huge influence to Renaissance art because of the realism of his work, the effect his art had on other sculptors, and his revival of classical art.
Architecture operates with in the confines of a creative field and the current economic means, these two systems would prefer to operate independently, however are innately linked. Although most people would rather have you believe that they create a finite juxtaposition between the two. Architecture is seldom considered both a profitable business and a functioning artistic outlet, in which practitioners are consistently made to choose between the two. However it is conceivable that between modern architectural practice and the application of typical business, that architects have the tools to overcome the current status quo. Through the many architectural business models created I intend to argue that a hybrid model could coexist if not only to feed actual architectural inspiration. The fields of architecture are consistently related albeit simplistically though brand, design, engineering, and real estate, which all ultimately feed into the greater economic market which everyone takes part. As the role of the architect changes we should consistently be using everything in our means to maintain our societal significance. Thus as our role of the master builder becomes appropriated by computational BIM software and our sister professions, architects as creators should use their skills to broaden their reach into all environments in which we live.
