Catcher In The Rye
The Catcher in the Rye, starts off with the main character, Holden
Caulfield being expelled from school once again. Holden is a sixteen year old
boy who has been expelled on numerous occasions from other schools. This time
he is being expelled from Pency Prep. Before Holden goes home to his parents,
he plans to spend a few days in New York. His parents do not know of the
expulsion, so he spends the weekend in a hotel. Holden is a pretty strange kid
who can always find a way to get himself into trouble. Holden constantly talks
about how he hates phony people and phony words. He complains of how the head
master Thurman of Pency Prep is a phony person. Holden says he is the kind of
guy who will treat you bad, but will act polite and nice to your parents when
they visit. Holden basically decides that almost everyone he meets in his life
is a phony. He even gets disgusted with the advertisement for Pency Prep. The
picture of the horse jumping over a fence is a false image in his opinion. He
says that he has never even seen a horse on the campus. Holden is also very
curious. Of all things, he wonders where the ducks go when the pond freezes
over in the park. He loves his red hunting cap that he bought for a dollar.
The cap serves as his way to be an individual. Stradtler is his roommate and
they are fairly good friends. Stradtler is two years older than him so he is
always going out on dates and has to listen to Holden question him. One time
Stradtler goes out with one of Holden$BCT(J long time friends, Jane Gallagher,
and he has to listen to an earful from Holden. Ackley is Holden$BCT(J
neighbor and they are all right friends. Ackley is the kind of guy though who
can get on anybody$BCT(J nerves in a heart beat. Ackley and Stradtler despise
of each other and rarely talk. Ackley is very nosy and Holden does not
understand why he puts up with Ackley$BCT(J nonsense. Holden has a dead
brother Allie, an older brother D.B., who is a writer, and a younger sister
Holden, before leaving for New York, attended a boarding school named Pencey Prep. He makes it clear that he thinks everyone, teachers and students alike, is a “phony.” At one point, his roommate Stradlater goes out with a girl who ends up being Jane Gallagher, a childhood friend and crush of Holden. In his eyes, this is a betrayal. Holden is annoyed
J.D Salinger gives his personal vision of the world successfully through his persona Holden Caulfield in the ‘Catcher in the Rye’. Caulfield struggles with the background of New York to portray Salinger’s theme – you must live the world as it is, not as you would like it to be. There by exposing Salinger’s vision on the world.
Holden alienates himself by believing he is better than everybody else. Every time Holden meets or talks about someone he is judgemental. Even when he is talking about someone he spends time with, he cannot help but ridicule them, “I never even once saw him [Ackley] brush his teeth....he had a lot of pimples. Not just on his forehead or his chin, like most guys, but all over his whole face. And not only that, he had a terrible personality. He was also sort of a nasty guy. I wasn't too crazy about him, to tell you the truth.”(Salinger,14 ). Ackley is probably the closest thing to a friend Holden has. Yet he criticizes him is a very nitpicky way, convincing himself he does not like
trials in which he thinks he's acting mature. Holden's time in the city is impulsive.
that he is trying to hide his true identity. He does not want people to know who he really is or that he was kicked out of his fourth school. Holden is always using fake names and tries speaking in a tone to persuade someone to think a cretin way. He does this when he talks to women. While he is talking to the psychiatrist he explains peoples reactions to his lies like they really believe him, when it is very possible that he is a horrible liar and they are looking at him with a “what are you talking a bout?” expression. Holden often lies to the point where he is lying to him self.
While observing the discription of many other characters in the novel as phony, it is safe to say that the phony character is indeed the protagonist. For example, the false character when lying to Mr. Spencer about going to the gym to clear everything out before leaving, is Holden. Once again we see this falsehood, when he tries to hit on some women in a bar, despite thinking the girls are not particularly extraordinary women.
Holden's problems in the real world were too much for him, he had to make up things to make himself seem better than what he was.
Holden is not just abnormal, he has problems that other teenagers, including the students at Pencey, experience going through adolescence. An example of this is Holden's jealousy towards Stradlater when he finds out he is going on a date with Jane Gallagher, “Boy,was I getting nervous” (42). Every teenager has bouts of jealously especially about the opposite sex, and Holden is no different. Holden's rebellious nature, to an extent, is typical for a teenage boy. His rebellious nature of smoking when it is not allowed, “You weren't allowed to smoke in the dorm...I went right on smoking like a madman.” (41-42). Holden is also anxious about change, which again to an extent is normal, “Do you happen to know where they go, the ducks...”(60), and he has the right to be; change, especially during adolescence, is a terrifying but exciting ride into the unknown, and similar to other adolescents Holden is afraid but intrigued about the unknown.
Holden struggles with himself mightily and cannot fulfill his responsibilities. One of Holden’s struggles is that he has a bad attitude towards everyone. For example, at the school he goes to, he hates his roommates and his teachers. In addition to not liking anyone, Holden
(CL) My prediction about Holden Caulfield was correct. He is a high school boy who seems to struggle a lot through his years as a teenager. Holden is not the smartest boy and does not have a fluent word choice. He honestly says that he acts immature even though he is 17 now. His physical appearance seems as if he was on old person. He claims that he has gray hair since birth but only on some parts of his head. As a
I recommend that Holden remain under my care at Happy Loons Hospital for the time being. I believe that participation in regular psychotherapy sessions will greatly benefit him as he negotiates his fears about adulthood. I also suggest that Holden initiate a course of Zylonconoff to stimulate the chemical production of his maturity gland. I believe that this combination of therapy and medication will result in Holden's acceptance of adulthood. Should he be able to do this, I believe the patient shall be able to attend the public high school his parents have chosen for him, as well as be able to make more mature relationships. The future looks bright for this patient.
Levi Strauss came to America in 1853 and opened his own shop to supply miners with daily necessities. Upon hearing of the need for stronger pants, Strauss took the responsibility of creating pants that meet miner’s needs. He took brown canvas from a tent and created a pair of pants. These waist overalls, as they were often referred to, were strong enough, but were not comfortable. Strauss then switched to denim. He had found a comfortable, suitable article of clothing for miners and other hard workers. They were almost perfect.
Yet because of these memories, Holden has developed the unique ability to speak candidly (though not articulately) about the people he meets. Though he seems very skeptical about the world, he is really just bewildered. His vocabulary often makes him seem hard, but in fact he is a very weak-willed individual. Holden has no concept of pain, and often likes to see himself as a martyr for a worthy cause. This is proven after the fight with Maurice, after which he imagines his guts spilling out on the floor.
Calvin Klein’s next step to fashion success was his radical underwear idea in 1980. His idea was to change from the classic white three pack of underwear to a new style called “boxer briefs”, which are a hybrid between boxers and briefs. His underwear featured his name “Calvin Klein” on the elastic. This took the fashion world with a storm and it made a change to the entire world of fashion, and now all brands copy his idea and style of underwear. This was part of the “The Calvin Klein Look” which was his simple style. His clothe didn’t feature bright yellows and greens, but rather black, white and gray combination. This was the specialty and style of Calvin
He complains about his school, saying that it is just like any other school and uses language that makes him sound very obnoxious. Holden seems to focus on girls quite a bit, just like any other teenage boy. He seems to focus on one girl in particular, a girl named Jane. We soon learn that Holden’s personality is not your average personality. Holden does seem to have some friends but he does not fall into many peer groups with the type of personality he has. Holden isn’t able to read social cues like most teenagers learn to do. For this reason, he seems to play around a lot in the wrong situations. Even his friends have matured enough to recognise that Holden needs to ‘grow up’. Holden’s resistance to emerging adulthood is the cause of many of the problems he is faced with during the
