Reading to the Children I want to share the experience that I got from reading to the little kids in Washington school. This had been my first time doing community service so I was a little nervous, I didn't think that the kids where going to like me. But when I go to the school and saw the lovable little kids I felt much better. When we got into little groups and started reading they started hugging me and reading along. They made me feel good and I was ready to come back next Thursday. This was the greatest experience that I had ever had, I felt like a teacher and it fells great to have those little kids liking you. This program helps me be more self confident, and I felt better communicating with others. It also made me think about going to college, I got this from the Guest Readers who went to talk with us. They all told us that we needed College in all the good jobs, and we didn't have to start from the bottom if we had a college degree. They also told us that the community service that we were doing was going to look great on our records. For almost every job you also need a good speaking ability and we have a good practice with little kids. If the kids see you not really interested in the book they would do another thing and ignore you. So for every book you have used another voice and use your body because body language is very important. At first I didn't think that the kids were getting anything from the reading, but I was wrong. One day as I came into the classroom I saw a little girl waiting for me with a little book, I never expected to see her sitting in her chair waiting for me, that made me feel great. I don't have any memory of been read aloud by anybody when I was young, but I know that these little kids will. This will put a warm felling inside my heart, and I will always remember the first group of kids that I have read to. Like I said before, this was my first time doing community service but its not going to be the last. I'm willing to give to a day of a week to go read to kids, I know that this is going to keep on being a great experience.
In Anthony's most well known series, Xanth, he uses thinly disguised mature content and extremely fantastic creatures to attract audiences from all age ranges (Reviews-Zombie Lover 3). Anthony also uses puns, play on words (for example quicksand is sand that would make you go really fast), to make the reader laugh at how common things can turn out to have amazing properties (Anthony, Spell for Chameleon). Some of Anthony's more mature subjects are the Adult Conspiracy and summoning the stork. In his book the Adult Conspiracy is made up of every adult and they must keep kids from learning anything fun or mature. Children and nymphs cannot summon the stork. It is only mentioned as the way for two loving adults to send a message that says they want a kid, which is actually delivered by a stork. Magic abounds in this series and any person who does not have magic is shunned as an outcast (Bleiler 365). In each of this series' books he only has one main character.
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
Throughout the fall semester I did community service at a thrift shop and soup kitchen in Lawrence. There I experienced things I have never encountered before in my life. These experiences have taught me a lot, and have truly made me look at America's underprivileged, in a new light.
To paint a complete portrait of Stephen, James Joyce uses a stream of consciousness in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man that varies in complexity as Stephen ages. As Stephen ages his consciousness begins to analyze and criticize the world. Although his complexity of language increases, Stephen concentrates on a few topics which are marked by epiphanies such as sex, religion and Ireland. The narrator emulates Stephen’s mind at stages of development from the simplicity of early language to the awareness in the later chapters. Joyce uses a change in syntax, imagery and choice of detail to illustrate the change in consciousness over time.
The number of women serving in the military is lower as considered to the number of men and in case of a military crisis in the country, only women are expected to register for the war. Back in the day women were expected to stay at home, get married and raise children. This has changed over time, and the women are registering to join the military more. The solution to gap the gender disparity lies in both the male, and female genders. The women should enroll for the military positions more and the men should stop seeing women as a hindrance for them. There have been successive wars with women involved in the combat military. I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at the elementary school. It opened my eyes to a few of the problems in our communities. I was able to make others aware of those problems through volunteering and being proactive. I am going to continue with the program for as long as I am able to do so. If only we had millions of these programs across the globe, many other children would be able to benefit and develop the skills to succeed educationally.

I performed my community service at a local elementary school. I chose this place because of its relative ease, and it was also an area I could easily get to and from. I started my first day very confused and out of character. The school was very bland, and it brought back memories of the time that I attended elementary school. According to the U.S. Constitution, all men are created equal, and this includes women. In spite of the fact that everyone is considered equal, the history of women in the military proves to be different. Women have been struggling for a place in combat roles for some time now, but aren’t being given the support or even the opportunity to try. People doubt women’s physical ability to get the job done but fail to acknowledge the fact that it takes more than strength and speed to successfully complete a mission. No one will ever know if allowing women to fight in combat roles is the right decision or not because they aren’t even being given the opportunity. As James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man unfolds, the central theme of isolation and rejection becomes evident. From birth to adolescence, the protagonist of the story, Stephen Dedalus, responds to his experiences throughout life with actions of rejection and isolation. He rebels against his environment and isolates himself in schoolwork, family, religion and his art, successively. James Joyce uses Stephen Dedalus' responses of isolation and rejection to illustrate the journey that the artist must take to achieve adulthood.
The U.S. military is one of the strongest powers in the world. It was built on the strength, determination, and toughness of its combat forces. These forces primarily consist of men, however women have recently fought their way into the front lines. Women believe they have what it takes to help fight and win in combat, but is putting them in fighting roles now really a good idea? According to author Greg Sheridan, “A NATION that sends its women into front-line combat, into close infantry, hand-to-hand fighting and killing, is a nation that either doesn't take combat seriously or doesn't take respect for women seriously” (Sheridan). When nations expect women to be able to fight and kill in combat alongside men who have had much more experience in these aggressive roles, they are not taking their military seriously. Throughout our childhood, and children’s childhood we read books. I remember reading, and having so many favorite books. The books that I loved, I now read to my son, and I am sure he will read to his children as well. Books are used throughout different milestones in a child’s life, as the child grows; the books change to meet their developmental needs. Theorists such as Piaget, Vygotsky, and Kohlberg have many theories regarding each developmental stage, and the needs in each stage from infancy, to adulthood. I am going to discuss how books can relate to these theories.
My church youth group has been a wonderful way to learn about community service. Seeing others who are disadvantaged, ill or needy has taught me the importance of caring for others and to be thankful for my own good health and stable family situation.
Reading to children can teach them skills they’ll need throughout their entire life. Reading aloud not only enhances their skills, it also affects how the their school life is. Being read to regularly is important to maintain the skills that the child learns, the earlier a child is being read to, the more skills they acquire. Parents will benefit from reading also, it creates a bond with their child that last a lifetime. Reading aloud will introduce children to books and reading so they can eventually do it on their own. Reading to children can improve many aspects of their life.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
