This paper will argue that Michelangelo was a true renaissance artist by sharing information about his life, artwork, and analysis.
Michelangelo was born at Rome, in March 6, 1475. He was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance. He was considered the greatest artist of his time. When he was introduced to art, he basically worked with marble his whole life and worked in other arts during specific time periods. His two best-known works are the Pieta and the David. (Gilbert,1)
When Michelangelo was learning the arts, he was an apprentice for Lorenzo the Magnificent. Michelangelo admired his teacher’s work and managed to copy his teacher’s work and got noticed by Ghirlandajo, who recommended him to the palace of the Medici. While he was at Medici, he stayed with Lorenzo’s sons in a fancy part of Florence, Italy. At this time, he was introduced to poet, Politian. When Lorenzo died, Michelangelo stayed home and studied anatomy. Soon after, he sculpted a marble Hercules, which was taken to Fontainebleau and has disappeared since. ( Michelangelo Buonarroti,2)
During the artists’ sculpting, he managed to create a sculpture called the “Virgin and Child”, which was also known as the “Madonna and Child.” This sculpture took 3 years to make, it started in 1501 to 1504. The child’s head and arms rest on a book, which is being held by Madonna. The sculpture is supposedly to represent sorrow and sadness, as Madonna’s eyes are closed. Sadly, an era came to an end on February 18th. Michelangelo passed away due to two illnesses and he outlived Julius ll. He was rumored to be homosexual due to vast majority of male nudity and he met a guy, whom he truly fell in love with, Tommaso Cavalieri, who was also an artist. He passed away in Rome and was buried in Florence. His work managed to get more popular when he passed. Him and his artwork are both admired, even to this very day. Raphael Sanizo, usually known just by his first name, was born in 1483 in Urbino, Italy. He was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. He was celebreated for the perfection and grace of his paintings and drawings. He was very productive in his life, but had an early death at the age of thirty-seven years old, letting his rival Michelangelo take the reins on the art world. He is one of the great masters of his time. He died on March 28 of 1483 at the age of thirty-seven years old.
Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6th 1475. His family was politically prominent as his family had large land property. His father was a banker and was looking to his son to engage in his businesses. As a young boy, he has ambitions of becoming a sculptor, but his father was very discouraging of this. “The Met’s very own Mona Lisa” (Tomkins 9). That is what Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Madonna and Child painting is known as today. “The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought the Madonna and Child for forty-five to fifty million dollars” (Tomkins 1). However, the painting was not always in public hands; in fact, the Met purchased the last known work of Duccio in private hands. Originally, the painting was held in the private hands of Adolphe Stoclet and his wife. When the couple died, their house and their collection went to their son, Jacques who held onto the painting, and passed it down to his daughters who lent it to an exhibition in Siena of Duccio and his school. The painting was eventually withdrawn from the exhibition and sold (Tomkins 2). Madonna and Child painting dated 1300 and was painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna a Sienese painter, who is considered the founder of modern Italian painting. I chose to research this painting because the subject matter of religious imagery and symbols interests me. Also because when I looked at the painting the emotion on the Madonna’s face almost jumped out at me. It is as if, she is looking at her newborn child with this deep sadness, which almost makes you think that the painting is foreshadowing the death of Jesus Christ. In addition, the burns of the side of the frame peaked my interest, as to why they were there. Art critics were also interested in this work they even consider Madonna and Child one of Duccio’s perfect works, and it said to be worth all the other paintings exhibited under the name of Duccio (Christiansen 14). The Madonna and Child painting’s iconography, imagery, emotional appeal to the viewers, and meaning all make this painting still a great work of art today.

The figure’s right leg assumes the majority of the weight, allowing the rest of the body to freely engage in something more complex. The right hand, gripping the stone, appears to tense; and his eyes dart left, suggesting sight of the beast, Goliath, to which the body follows the direction of the head and swerves around. Michelangelo demonstrates immense knowledge of the human body and its measures—the muscles, skeletal structure—that were previously unknown [6]. For years, in fact, he dissected human bodies to comprehend their internal mechanics: “There is no animal whose anatomy he would not dissect and he worked on so many human anatomies that those who have spent their lives at it and made it their profession hardly knows as much as he does,” [7]. Basically, the Renaissance, also known as the rebirth, was a cultural movement that started an artistic transformation and started the scientific revolution. Some of his most famous name were “Celestial Love, Dante, The Doom of Beauty, Joy May Kill, Love’s Justification, On The Brink of Death, To the Supreme Being and To Vittoria Colonna.” All of the poems I listed was made between (1475-1564). Some things he did in his life time were; In 1490-92 he learned sculpting where he worked in Medici household and sculpted under a master sculptor named Giovanni. At the age of 17 years old he had was hit in the nose by another apprentice that had caused him to be distorted for the rest of his life. The fortunes changed for the better.
