When asked “Are elite sports people overpaid?” people have varied responses. Some people would agree with this and say ‘why should a person that hits or kicks a ball be paid as much as someone who saves lives or teaches children everyday? But on the other hand some would disagree and say that sports people are paid for their skills just like everybody else! These are both very good arguments. People that say elite sports people are overpaid do not know what they are talking about as sports people are paid for their skills just like any other occupation or career. For example, a specialist doctor is paid over three-hundred thousand dollars a year, this is an astronomical amount! On the other hand, an average AFL player is paid two-hundred and nineteen thousand a year, sure, there are some players in the AFL such as Chris Judd and Jonathon Brown who are regarded as the best and they might earn a little more than average but If anyone is overpaid it is these specialist doctors as any one can go to university and be come a doctor but it take natural talent and raw skill to be a top level AFL player. But on the other hand, why should a person that hits or kicks a ball be paid as much as someone who saves lives. AFL players may have all this skill and everything else that some other people do not, but do they have the skill of saving lives on a day-to-day basis like a doctor does? Or do they have the skill of teaching children how to read and write like a teacher does? Yes, doctors are paid more but they do more as far as other people’s lives are concerned. Also, outside of a team's franchise, they also promote endor... ... middle of paper ... ...as if a newspaper employee of a Gardner had done those things he would be allowed straight back into his job, where Cousins was suspended for two years. Take Nathan Lovett-Murray for on the other hand, on August the third this year his house was raided and one single ecstasy tablet was found. He is a highly respected member of the club and the community, especially amongst the indigenous contingent, where he has held seminars for them and has also started and urban hip hop record label to help some indigenous kids record their music as some cannot afford a proper studio and producer. With this silly little act, even if they were not his, it still had an affect on his career. I do not believe that people opinions are ever going to change on this issue and it will always be an issue in society, but I myself believe that AFL players are not over paid. Thank You.
