It was a normal day in the Arathi Basin. To fuel a war, we need resources; to win a war, we need to eliminate the enemy. Luckily for us, this battleground boasts both concepts. While the others are destroying each other, wave after wave, we must take the land that will aid them. This, of course, is also done by killing enemies, squad after squad. A team is not pulled into the basin out of nowhere, after you request your shift, you must wait for it. But this is no standard job with designated shifts. As a volunteer, you enter when you are called, and leave when you are finished. The game begins when the civilians come under attack. At that point, the battle begins. In about sixty seconds after an assault, the enemy can not only destroy all of our civilians, but replace them with their own. You must be able to gain around two thousand resources before the enemy has no chance to win. At that point, the match is over, and you must wait once more for the time to come. Now that the challenge was presented, I accepted the task. Our story takes place in basic training, when one is required to assault each and every point at least once, for you are not a true fighter if you do not. When the drums of war sounded, and the gates to the Defiler's Den opened, the game begins.
It was a bumpy start before the Defilers actually became friendly with me, but it was worth it in the end. The match started like any other: teams rushing, spells casting, blades clashing, land controlling. In the end, the only thing that matters is victory. I started out not knowing when what to do. This place was foreign to me; I was just following the others around.

Throughout the battle, you see numerous Army Values and Warrior Ethos being used. “I will never leave a fallen comrade”, was the etho used the most, to reach the separated platoon. The battle also shows that not all tactical orders are effective, but as a leader you must never second guess yourself.
In the beginning Baumer enters the war as a recruit and begins to see the reality of war. During training he has to remake the officer’s bed 14 times. The entire training course was marching, which does not help them at all fighting in the trenches. “I have remade his bed fourteen times in one morning. Each time he had some fault to find and pulled it to pieces” (26). Here Baumer describes how his commanding officer makes him do over a simple task over and over for absolutely no reason.
The Great war is in full rage. The Generals are commanding the war and they are discussing acceptable losses as they plan and strategize the next move into battle. The battle of Argonne Forest is started.
The insurgents had arrived in the neighboring villages of the camp deep in the night and started grouping together with the Nuristan militia men. Their first step involved evicting the civilians in the village on an impending attack on the Keating combat outpost. Following analysis showed that the villagers might not have moved out of the area during the attack. The attack started at dawn when the insurgent...
Young men in old, ill-fitted uniforms lay twisted on dried, grassy wheat as we can see them reaching for a weapon that once laid above them or clutching their fists to take the pain away as dawn arises and dense fog hovers the horizon and tiny peaks of mountain peer out above a ruthless and needlessly waste. Tiny horse like figures blend into the background, posing like trees as riders dislodge, seeming to search and strip the bodies of shoes, weapons, anything that can help the next soldier survive.
Soldiers, using their instinct alone, must set aside their humanity to survive during their time on the battlefield. When Paul and his friends reach the battlefront, they find that they “become on the instant human animals” (56). Because of their desire to survive, they must surrender their morals and beliefs to their primal instinct. In this instance, they become savage beasts, making it easier to kill on the field. Their former selves effectively die in the war, becoming “insensible, dead men, who through some trick, some dreadful magic, are still able to run and to kill” (116). The war takes a toll on
Game day. I was alerted violently with a deafening scream of my alarm and awoke instantly, ready to put my heart and soul into one of the toughest battles of my life. I was focused on success and nothing was going to stop me. I struggled to stop the scream of the alarm, missing the button with frail weak slaps. I raced to get myself ready, geared up in my battle clothes and fuelled my body with a scrumptious breakfast. Full as a bull, perched myself into the seat of the van, ready for an aggressive battle.

Bullets flying through the air right over me, my knees are shaking, and my feet are numb. I see familiar faces all around me dodging the explosives illuminating the air like lightning. Unfortunately, numerous familiar faces seem to disappear into the trenches. I try to run from the noise, but my mind keeps causing me to re-illustrate the painful memories left behind.
When one thinks of war they think of one side attacking the other, but in this war we spend much of our time in damp, muddy trenches, which smell of sewage and rotting corpses. The sun is high so we all lay low in the trenches to avoid sniper fire. So I sit and rest enjoying the break, using the time to clean my bolt-action rifle. My fellow brothers-in-arms are busy taking care of everyday tasks such as personal hygiene or writing letters home.
The great event of all our lives has at last come to pass. A war of gigantic proportions, infinite consequences and indefinite duration is on us, and will affect the interests and happiness of ev...
Samuel B. Griffith’s translation of “Sun Tzu: The Art of War” is an inside look at military practices of today. I did not find one technique that is not or would not be utilized in modern military maneuver, leadership, or training. The most astounding fact is that the Art of War was written well over two thousand years ago, even at the most conservative date. Although most of the techniques in this text are already in practice today, the value of “The Art of War” is a never-ending treasure chest of knowledge, and it deserves a place as a required reading for anyone seeking knowledge about war fighting or the history of war.
