Shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center September 11, 2001 there began a rash of Anthrax laced letters being sent through the United States Postal System. This form of Anthrax was sent as spores known as Bacillus Anthracis, the type of bacterium that causes Anthrax. This terrorist style act resulted in 22 cases of disease and 5 deaths (Walsh, Skane 2011).
Anthrax is an extremely life threatening disease. It is a hard working and thorough bacterium. This bacterium becomes dormant and spore like when it lacks a host or is placed in danger by its surrounding environment, such as extreme temperature variations. In this form, it can survive for decades at a time until it has a new host to attach itself to. Once Anthrax has a new host, it begins to reproduce and spread at a high rate of speed. Agricultural areas are the place that Anthrax is usually found in abundance often infecting animals such as cattle and sheep amongst others. Humans can contract Anthrax in ways such as handling of the infected livestock or items that have come in contact with the infected animals or by inhaling the spores from the animal by products. This is most commonly known as Cutaneous Anthrax (Walsh, Skane 2011).
The first victim of the 2001 Anthrax attacks was Claire Fletcher. She was an employee of the Columbia Broadcasting system in New York City. Claire’s symptoms included nausea and facial swelling. Later her symptoms were confirmed to be caused by Cutaneous Anthrax. After being provided proper medical attention, Claire made a full recovery. On October 4, 2001, Robert Stevens of the Sun newspaper in Boca Raton Florida was exposed to a form of Inhalation Anthrax and died the following day. Five letters in all were sent out, one to the American Broadcasting Company, one to National Broadcasting Company, CBS, The New York Post, The National Enquirer, and the American Media. All five letters were post marked from Trenton, New Jersey. Additionally, two more letters were sent to the Washington DC offices of Senator Tom Daschle and Senator Patrick Leahy (Embar 2009). These two letters were also post marked from Trenton, New Jersey. The letter sent to Senator Daschle’s office was opened by his aide and found to contain a more severe form of Anthrax than all of the previous letters. In the early news reports, it was said to have been “Weapons form Anthrax” (Embar 2009).
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a truly outstanding author. His detailed descriptions and imagery will surely keep people interested in reading The Scarlet Letter for years to come. In writing this book he used themes evident throughout the entirety of the novel. These themes are illustrated in what happens to the characters and how they react. By examining how these themes affect the main characters, Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, one can obtain a better understanding of what Hawthorne was trying to impress upon his readers.
The Demon in the Freezer is divided into eight sections. It begins with the upsetting details surrounding the sudden death of Robert Stevens, just three weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001. An autopsy showed Mr. Stevens died of inhalation anthrax. Subsequent anthrax illnesses among people exposed to letters laced with anthrax frightened the nation. Some thought the letters might also contain smallpox, but fortunately this was not the case. “There had been only eighteen cases of inhalation anthrax in the past hundred years in the United States, and the last reported case had been twenty-three years earlier” (5). It is no wonder that people became alarmed at the threat of a major anthrax outbreak.
The Scarlet Letter starts off by throwing Hester Prynne into drama after being convicted for adultery in a Puritan area. Traveling from Europe to America causes complications in her travel which also then separates her from her husband, Roger Chillingworth for about three years. Due to the separation, Hester has an affair with an unknown lover resulting in having a child. Ironically, her lover, Arthur Dimmesdale, is a Reverend belonging to their church who also is part of the superiors punishing the adulterer. No matter how many punishments are administered to Hester, her reactions are not changed. Through various punishments, Hester Prynne embraces her sin by embroidering a scarlet letter “A” onto her breast. However, she is also traumatized deep within from everything she’s been through. Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts this story of sin by using rhetorical devices such as allusion, alliteration and symbolism.
The 2001 anthrax attacks was one of the worst bio-weapon attacks on the US in history. The attacks where done through the mail. The anthrax was placed in envelopes with a letter and mailed from various locations to different people and organizations. As humans we are affected by our environment, either the social aspects, or the location of residence, or interior of the world we live in. These effects can either be positive to one’s nature or deteriorating to one’s morals. When we look at the substantial impacts of a positive culture, such as the enlightenment that boosted the intelligence and desire to learn of expanding countries all around, we see that it can truly make a difference. On the other hand, if a child is raised in a cruel environment or drug ridden neighborhood, they to will most likely follow in the path. So our society and environment greatly impacts our human behavior and thoughts, this is especially shown in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter throughout the moral and physical changes in Hester, Dimmesdale, and Pearl.
During the fall of 2001, envelopes containing a dry, toxic powder were mailed to numerous government and news media offices. This powder was a deadly biological weapon called anthrax. As a result of these mailings, there were eleven cases of inhalational anthrax and eleven cases of cutaneous disease (Duchin, 2003). Five people died and seventeen people became seriously ill (Linkous, 2004). John Ashcroft, the attorney general of the United States during that time period, declared to the American people that a man by the name of Steven Hatfill was a person of interest in the 2001 anthrax attacks case. Later, the FBI stated Hatfill was not a suspect, nor does it use the term person of interest (Hatfill, 2002).
Six Works Cited In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the meaning of the letter "A" changes throughout the novel. This change is significant as it indicates the personal growth of the characters as well as the enlightenment of the townspeople. When the novel begins, the letter "A" is a symbol of sin. As the story progresses the “A” slowly transforms to a symbol of Hester’s strength and ability. By the end of the novel, the letter “A” has undergone a complete metamorphisis and represents the respect that Hester has for herself.
On September 18th and the weeks following, a multitude of letters containing the Bacillus Anthracis bacterium were mailed to various New York news stations. Individuals at 5 different stations became ill with similar symptoms that included vomiting and shortness of breath. This began the nationwide panic known as the Amerithrax Investigation. The Amerithrax investigation was said to be the worst biological attacks in all of US History. Three weeks later, on October 9th, two more letters, containing the anthrax bacterium was mailed to two Democratic senators. In all of the 7 attacks, over 22 people developed infections, over half being life-threatening. The letters themselves confused federal investigators. In the sets of letters addressed to the media, certain T’s and A’s were bolded. When added together, the groups of letters formed 3 codons that corresponded to 3 amino acids. These amino acids pointed federal investigators towards a possible culprit, Bruce Edwards Ivins, a scientist for the US government in Frederick, Maryland.

The rapid pace of vaccine development convinces people that they are safe from the infectious diseases. Unfortunately, the anthrax outbreak in 2001, having killed five people, reveals the vulnerability of the public health, suggesting that further research on contagious epidemics should be developed abruptly. In response to this issue, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) granted Boston University a $128 million funding for the construction of a new leading facility known as the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL or BU Biolab), which would be sited on the Boston University Medical Campus, to battle against contagious ailments. Besides conducting research on infectious diseases, the BU Biolab will also perform research to prepare for bioterrorism (Le Duc). According to the Center for Disease Control, there are four levels of increasing of containment for research on infections ranging from Biosafety Levels 1 through 4 (BSL-1 to BSL-4). While much of the research on epidemics is done in laboratories with BSL-2 to BSL-3, the BU Biolab, with the highest level of precaution, BSL-4, will conduct research on rare contagious epidemics including anthrax, ebola, and plague, which are usually life threatening.
Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of The Scarlet Letter, has an extremely elaborate, and well-depicted vocabulary. Many of his sentences and paragraphs tend to be very verbose, but at the same time very helpful in giving the reader an accurate representation of the exactly how Chillingworth reacts when he first sees Hester. Within the passage on page sixty-seven Hawthorne is giving an intricate description of Chillingworth’s reaction when he first sees Hester after she is released from prison. With his usage of both syntax and imagery throughout this passage, he most effectively illustrates his vision of Chillingworth. Hawthorne gives us quite a bit of description within this passage, which allows us to see an intellectual side of Chillingworth. Generally people are intellectual or religious, the big bang vs. Genesis. Chillingworth is portrayed as intellectual, which conflicts with the Puritan views of religion.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was not a Puritan. But Hawthrone’s forefathers were Puritans, so he had an understanding of their belief system and their basis behind it. He stated that he hoped the sins of his forefathers had been forgiven. Hoping to expose those ideas which he understood, yet despised, Hawthorne purposely presented many important Puritan beliefs as import aspects to the Scarlet Letter. In the Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne addresses three main Puritan beliefs: providence, predestination, and the strict code of ethics that the settlers of New Englanders lived by.
Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is about two boys who became friends in Chabot, a small town in Mississippi in the 1970’s. Larry ott and Silas jones first became friends when they met in school. They lived differently; Larry was the child of a lower-middle class white parents and Silas the child of a single black woman. Silas’s mum was the maid who took care of Larry as a child. Larry as a child brought snakes to school. He was smart, a loner, gifted and knew a lot of stuffs. Silas was his only friend. Larry was a gentle but scary boy who lived an isolated life because he was a monster. The tragedy of the past had made him a suspect in the town in regards to this new crime of a girl missing for eight days. According to Washingtonpost.com,” Crooked Letter makes a hunting demonstration of Faulkner’s claim that the past is never dead.
Anthrax is a very real and dangerous threat to all people who come in contact with it. The bacterial infection is caused by the bacteriaium Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax is divided into three categories all are contracted in different ways. The first type is called Cutaneous Anthrax; this is where anthrax spores make contact with the skin. If there is a cut or a lesion then a person can be infected. Cutaneous Anthrax is the most common way to get anthrax, but is also the least lethal. The second type of anthrax is called Pulmonary Anthrax this is where a person inhales the spores of anthrax directly into the lungs. If this type of anthrax is left untreated it could lead to death. The third type of anthrax is called Gastrointestinal Anthrax, this form results from eating meat from animals that have been infected with the anthrax bacteria. This causes the intestinal tract to become infected and this from is almost always fatal. This particular mode of anthrax has never been seen in the United States.
The Significance of Letters in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Letters play a very important role in 'Pride and Prejudice'. They can link the story because letters provide information which we would not have found out from the dialogue between the characters. We an also find out extra background information which can help with the reader's understanding of characters, the plot and the novel in general. Letters can reveal characters' personalities and how they feel about the other characters in the novel, for example Miss Bingley's feelings about Jane. Letters are used as a dramatic device in 'Pride and Prejudice' to further the plot, link the story and to inform the readers of the character's personalities.
