Characterisation The character Mr Jones is a representation of the capitalist regime of Imperial Russia under the Tsar. Mr Jones was a ruthless man just like the Tsar. The name Jones is a common English name which seems a strange choice for a character representing the Tsar. However the Romanovs were a large dynasty that ruled Russia for 300 years. Therefore as there were many people in Britain with the surname Jones there were many Romanovs in Russia. Old Major the pig is a representation of the Russian government led by Lenin and the ideals they preached just like Old Major who was preaching his vision of a better world for the animals. The character Napoleon, is a reflection of the real life Napoleon Bonaparte who was as revolutionary French leader and later became a dictator. As Old Major’s successor was Napoleon the same goes for Lenin’s successor named Stalin, who was a dictator. The change in power caused Stalin to make a brutal regime which paved the way for the deaths of millions of Russians.
