The social anathema which is animal cruelty has perspired for too long a time. Elephants deserve to roam the forests and Savannahs freely instead of being killed and the later mutilated for their brilliant tusks. It has also been verified that many “elephants that perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies (Dosomething.org).” Elephants are not the only animal treated in this fashion. Furthermore, the beautiful and majestic stallion belongs on the open prairie and not locked away in a 6x4 cage, dying from starvation and thirst. Elephants and stallions are only two animals out of the thousands that are negatively affected by people. Together, we have to be the voice for the speechless and helpless animals that we share the world with. In order to protect the life of animals today, stricter laws must be implemented to stop animal cruelty. Animal cruelty; how broad this subject can be? How many of us actually knows and, most importantly, understands what it is? When we as people hear the words, animal cruelty, we think of serious harm that one has caused to an animal knowingly, deliberately, and inhumanly. Pictures may shoot through our minds of animals bleeding somewhere after being shot. Advertisements often showcase this blatant reality harshly, which is necessary to do so. In the meantime, smaller incidents or incidents of smaller intensity may slip our minds but it is still considered animal cruelty. In many cases, “we believe, subconsciously, that animals are more equipped with perseverance than us humans (Joshi).” In reality however, this is the exact opposite as animals are mute and have no means to communicate with humans.
