The American Dream America has always been looked at around the world of the land of opportunity. Today we have millions of people in poverty, social inequality, and many immigration problems. Is this nation leading down to self destruction? Many Americans are asking this question and looking for the sought after answers. Everyone knows about all the bad things we do and not the good ones. There is no doubt the American dream has changed but, despite the problems we as Americans face today, the American dream is still living fiercely and available to anyone who wants it. One of those areas a lot of people would not think of would be the Olympics. What does the Olympics have to do with the American dream? Well if an individual breaks the Olympics down, a strong tie between the two become apparent. Let us be honest. We like to win as Americans; second place is not good enough. We happen to have some of the world’s best athletes every time we compete. These are Americans that make themselves better with work ethic and determination. We always show lots of emotion while some contenders from other countries do not. Some of those athletes have government intervention to motivate them. Unfortunately, we cannot simply set aside the fact that some of these “motivations” are not positive and optional to the athletes. A guy could go on and on about every bad thing America has done in its past but, the issues that stand out the most would be slavery, Native American extermination, and Mexico. There is no doubt that slavery was wrong. According to Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, “The domestic trade continued into the 1860s and displaced approximately 1.2 million men, women, and children”(gilderlehrman). The rest of the world was doing it at the time of colonizing the Americas so it was a relatively common practice. Even after we fought a war that killed 750,000 Americans, we continued to strongly discriminate till about the 1970s. We still are not where we need to be and, sadly, probably never will be. There will always be race supremacy groups. Slavery was bad and so was taking Native Americans away from their home. We could not control settlers from moving west and resolution was very one sided towards the settlers. People back then literally thought Indians were wild savages. Not only did we have problems with the Natives, we had problems with Mexico. Originally, we took all of Mexico in the war. We actually gave back half of Mexico and kept the Texas Territory. Despite that those Texan Americans wanted to be part of America, it was imperialistic. We cannot from these bad deeds we have done. As Americans, we have to accept them, remember them, and
